I think that there was already a movie about this many years ago. I seem to remember seeing it.

Drank too much coffee and read the title "Hardy Old Man". Wtf, this should be NSFW. Time to lay off the caffeine.

Anywhoo... definitely excited about it. Big fan of both actors.

Yippee-ki-yay...

Wonder how these types of movies play out in Russia? Nevertheless, probably worth seeing one way or another.

Good question.

I did the report on the investigation (in the link above).
It's sad, really...they couldn't find their own butts with both hands.

Tonite I watched Citizen X (available as a free stream with Amazon Prime).

Pretty good movie.
It does seem to, generally, follow the actual history.

On paper this looked good so I had NF sent me a copy. IDK maybe just me but it was boring as hell despite having Hardy & Oldman in it. Had to eject after 45 min.

However, I was able to catch a marathon of documentaries on the AHCH about Auschwitz. There was one that was relived by one of the survivors who saw everything hell had to offer I was totally enthralled by these things that actually took place was just mind boggling insane.

When they do re-air it which they will I'm pretty sure get your dvr ready, sit back, hear & witness the montronsity that transpired you'll be like OMG the entire time. The details, like how the air was filled with burned meat like an outdoor BBQ coming from one of the crematories.

One of the greatest documentaries ever and the best movie of all time about the Holocaust:

NF sent me a copy.

Very interesting movie...
For those who know nothing about the actual case and are fans of the actors, this might be worth a rental.

The movie has little to do with the case involved and more about Stalinism than anything else.
Not necessarily a bad thing, but....

Lots of talent wasted here: Charles Dance, Vincent Cassal, Gary Oldman.
Although Noomi does a good job, Tom Hardy tries too hard too often and comes away not convincing.

It seems that the filmmakers took the BAREST (and I do mean "barest") outline of the history and turned it into something entirely different.
Almost nothing is the "real story."
Too bad, because the true story of Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo is as frightening as can be imagined by a sane mind.
Citizen X does a much, much better job of telling the nightmare of the monster Chikatilo.

Had the Child 44 disc recently, thought it was okay but @oink 's comment about waste of talent sounds about right. Tuned into Amazon just now to see Citizen X, think I may have seen this although a long time ago....

Yeah, Citizen X was much better. Joss Ackland nicely menacing as usual. Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland and Jeffrey DeMunn all were excellent.

+1. The older Citizen X was excellent while Child 44 was pale by comparison. At the end of the film, the Russian scientist was ridiculed by the world based on her finding, such a riot. I also found Steven
Rhea's character had mature thru out his tumultuous years and pressure, as indicated by his dealing with the chief investigator wasting almost a month w/o results.. Max Von Sydow stole the show again despite his short appearance.

It was sad and sick that so many had to die despite the guy was caught. The guilty party or murderer was indeed the society under perverted communism, or the party itself who could not harbor or produce murderer w/in its own rank.

Agreed.

I don't see it that way at all.

IMO, it was a situation where communication within law enforcement was nearly non-existent and what few officers there were were inept investigators.

What I was referring to was the statement that "communist member cannot be a murderer" or something to that effect, thus there is no way to convict the suspect. They just rounded up the usual suspects or frame someone.

Yeah I had to read that more than once....I think that was the emphasis of at least one of the synopses of these films I read, that the Communist Party's propaganda goals were far more important than the citizens, so a party line of this can't happen due to our superior politics....that's pretty perverted....but that's politics, innit?

I didn't get around to seeing Child 44 until this evening, after having recorded it earlier from Cinemax. Thanks to my low expectations and a sensational ensemble cast, I was reasonably well entertained. There were a few scenes, which I thought had been very well done. One of them moved me. That was when Raisa, played by the luminous Noomi Rapace, told her husband, played by the equally excellent Tom Hardy, the real reason she had first lied to him about her name and later agreed to marry him.

Unfortunately, overall the film felt rushed, disjointed, and made a somewhat disappointing presentation of what should have been a great story. 7 Stars out of 10, and that's being generous.

As was discussed earlier in the thread, the 1995 HBO film, Citizen X did a far better job of telling the story of the Soviet serial killer than Child 44 did.
