The 7th Voyage

of Sinbad (1958)

Turner Classic Movies

Ray Harryhausen

June 29, 1920

Raymond Frederick Harryhausen was an American artist, designer, visual effects creator, writer and producer who created a form of stop-motion model animation known as "Dynamation".

Director: Nathan Juran
Writer: Ken Kolb (as Kenneth Kolb)
Stars: Kerwin Mathews, Kathryn Grant, Richard Eyer, Torin Thatcher
Visual Effects by: Ray Harryhausen

Top-notch adventure/ fantasy pits hero Sinbad against unscrupulous magician (Thatcher) who has reduced Princess Grant to miniature size. Good pacing, eye-popping special effects by special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen (including famed duel with skeleton), music score by Bernard Herrmann. Truly one if not the Greatest stop-action fantasy films ever made ! A winner all the way.

Thumbs down

Into the Wild - Having glamourized the notion of living in the wilderness and off the land, a self-absorbed, poetry-spouting pseudo-intellectual abandons society and heads for Alaska.

Comments: A slow-paced movie with an unlikeable protagonist is a hard sell. The first 40 of its 148 minutes was all my wife and I could stand.

DVD/Turner Classic Movies

Directed by Anatole Litvak (The Snake Pit (1948) this above average boxing drama features an all-star cast that includes James Cagney ,Ann Sheridan ,Frank Craven ,Donald Crisp, Frank McHugh ,Arthur Kennedym George Tobias, Jerome Cowan, Elia Kazan (that's right the future Oscar winning director - On the Waterfront (1954) Anthony Quinn, Lee Patrick and the list goes on .

James Cagney, Anthony Quinn, and Ann Sheridan

City for Conquest has about everything that the Warners Brothers dish up very well-the East Side slums, taxi dance halls, Stillman's gymnasium, prize fights, gangsters, pent house parties, burlesque cuties. And it even has a frustrated young composer who finally turns in a symphony-a symphony of New York-which sets the whole town on its ear.

Strong emotive performances from Cagney and Sheridan . City for Conquest is a strong film with definite Noir overtones. Heavy on the melodramatic sentimentality supported by fabulous performances and an emotional story.

The Raneys are definitely genuine people, although there is, of course, a little hype and drama on screen. Marty is for sure an intense dude and very kind and caring. They all truly came to help and are big-hearted, hard-working, real people.- Ozark County Times, Jan 6, 2018

Charlize! Streamed free w/ads on Crackle. This isn't nearly as bad as the poster makes it look.

Charlize plays a writer of young adult fiction (hence the title) who is bored and depressed with her somewhat empty urban existence, and tries to rekindle a romance with an old high-school flame. Pretty good performances and writing all around. And there's even a little skin (sort of). Directed by Jason Reitman. Recommended for the Charlize fans, and others lookin for somethin a teensy bit off the beaten path (but not too far off).

The Invisible Man (2020) - Traumatized and highly-skeptical at first, Cecilia eventually accepts that she has truly escaped her cruel and controlling husband, optics-engineering genius Adrian Griffin...until things around her start to go mysteriously and horribly wrong.

Comments: Notwithstanding a somewhat weak ending, this was (overall) a well-scripted, well-paced and tension-filled suspense flick. Terrific performance by Elisabeth Moss.
