Apollo 11 (2019) - Todd Douglas Miller directs. Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins.

Watched last night in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Lump in the throat at times. I think everyone who was old enough to understand the significance of the event remembers where they were when the landing occurred. Great looking and sounding movie with archival film never seen publicly before. Although the Blu-ray released on May 14, 2019 I held back on watching it until last night. Recommended.

First Man

After watching Apollo 11 last night going to watch "First Man" later today....after the "Open".

I remember the landing well and going out and staring at the moon like we could see them.

Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history. Written by Academy Award® winner Josh Singer (Spotlight), the drama is produced by Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars) through their Temple Hill Entertainment banner, alongside Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars) executive produces. DreamWorks Pictures co-finances the film.

The favourite was definitely a strange story and slow moving, but I actually liked it.
It’s a slow moving movie, but that doesn’t bother me. Great acting and cinematography.

Pandorum (2009) - Christian Alvart directs. Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue, Cung Le and Eddie Rouse.

Revisited this underrated sci-fi gem. There's something about a foreign sci-fi film that has a different feel than your typical Hollywood flick. German director and production. An eerie and grisly mindbender of a story, it's little wonder that it attracted the attention of producer Paul W. S. Anderson (Event Horizon). With little or no advance promotion the film was a box-office bomb and ended plans of a sequel and prequel.

Overture Films was collapsing when this was released, so the promotion budget was, just not there.

The War of the Worlds (1953) - Byron Haskin directs. George Pal produced. Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne, Robert Cornthwaite and Paul Frees.

First movie I remember seeing as a little boy, scared the bejesus out of me. It would be many years before I actually read the book and discovered how different it was. The movie has a definite religious lean which H.G. Wells did not have. It's a 50's sci-fi classic that probably seems pretty cheesy to younger audiences.

Scared me too. It was sorta like Orson Wells version. Hadn't seen Gene Barry before......was it later on Bat Masterson?

THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS(1957) DVD

https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Spirit-...IAAOSwIoNdB8S8

A piece of American -- worldhistory-- The Spirit of St. Louis is something everyone should see.

Charles 'Slim' Lindbergh struggles to finance and design an airplane that will make his New York to Paris flight the first solo transatlantic crossing.

"The Spirit of St. Louis" is a James Stewart one-man show. He is just fabulous in his role. Stewart, who was nominated for five best actor Oscars -- his one win was for "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) -- I would say his role of pilot hero Charles Lindbergh turns in perhaps his most impressive feat. Billy Wilder's movie is a piece of American -- and world -- history, The Spirit of St. Louis is something everyone should see.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) - Rob Letterman directs. Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy.

I honestly did not know much about the movie or the Japanese character it's derived from. My youngest daughter added the movie to the Google Play family library and we simul-watched it streaming last night. It took me awhile to understand the premise but by the second act I was drawn into the story. It was enjoyable enough in 4K with Atmos and Ryan Reynolds' snarky humor, some of the CGi was quite remarkable I thought. Took in a worldwide total of $429.7 million. Blu-ray releases August 6, 2019.

Got me thinking.

My first remembered was in a smoky theater with my parents. No idea what the film was. Couldn't have been much more than 3 or 4.

The first film I saw on my own was Mogambo (1953). Maybe age 7. Good action, no formal critique, however.

Captain Marvel (2019) Theater in March 8th pre-order 3D/2D Blu-ray from United Kingdom second viewing 7/23

Integral to the MCU, and a must-see for Marvel and sci-fi fans in particular; and comic book and cinemagoers in general; especially those who lived through the 90s. Performances are great, the whole cast is exceptional, and the hero characters are great role models. Larson killed it as Carol and the titular hero, and I can't wait to see more of her in the MCU. The movie's so much fun. Direction, cinematography, filmscore, action, humor, emotion, vfx, editing were all great. There're hilarious moments as well as emotional, powerful, and empowering ones too. The movie's full of surprises and unexpicted twists, and carries important messages. There're a Stan Lee tribute, his signature cameo, a significant mid-credits scene, and a less significant post-credits one, but you should see it. Absolutely worth a second viewing.

King of Hearts (1966 film)

A very "in" antiwar movie of the 60's. Very clever and fun movie.

The film is set in a small town in France near the end of World War I. As the Imperial German Army retreats, they booby trap the whole town to explode. The locals flee and, left to their own devices, a gaggle of cheerful lunatics escape the asylum and take over the town — thoroughly confusing the lone Scottish soldier who has been dispatched to defuse the bomb.

Directed by Philipe de Broca
Produced by Philipe de Broca
Written by Daniel Boulanger (screenplay)
Maurice Bessy (screenwriter)
Starring Alan Bates
Music by Georges Delerue
Cinematography Pierre Lhomme

Really good story and great acting. Was totally blown away by the young girl, Mckenna Grace. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more from her in the future.

House Hunting 2013

Marc Singer Art Lafleur Paul McGill Hayley DuMond

Somewhat interesting movie about two different families that are lured to see a open house listing in a rural area. Also, was cool seeing Marc Singer from V taking on a role like this. Good acting. Good production value. Dare I say mildly thought provoking film about being in Purgatory. That is not a spoiler. It's not stated, but made glaringly obvious about 15 minutes into the film. A few plot holes, but worth the watch. Free on Amazon Prime

Blind Fury (1989) - Phillip Noyce directs. Tim Matheson produced. Rutger Hauer, Terrance O'Quinn, Lisa Blount, Brandon Call, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Meg Foster and Noble Willingham.

Our tribute watching to Hauer's passing. My family could have gone with something more obvious like Blade Runner or LadyHawke but decided on one of his lesser known films. A film about a sword-yielding blind Vietnam War veteran. A fine example of late 80's cheese mixing humor with action. Hauer is fairly convincing in his blind swordsman action scenes, he is quoted as saying it was one of his most difficult roles. Two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert.
