Based on an anime Gunnm which is sourced from manga. The video, in 2 episodes, from 1993 was under an hour but the manga series lived on.

Look forward to next summer.

Is it too much to ask to have a real actress instead of a lifeless 3D character (mocap or not)??? It even makes the real actors “interacting” with her look weird. Are we supposed to forget that it’s a CG “person”??? Sigh... eye movement is not natural, clothes are not natural, facial expressions are not natural. Just because digital sweat looks somewhat cool doesn’t make it realistic - specially when there are “real” actors around...acting.

I cannot believe that James Cameron spent decades developing the project and this is the result. It looks atrocious. I haven't seen Uncanny Valley that bad since The Polar Express. In absolutely no way does the CG character appear to be in the same physical reality as the live actors.

I am horrified to read that this has a $200 million budget. I will be amazed if the movie makes $2 million at the box office. It's certain to be one of the biggest flops of all time.

You know what it's missing, Morph? Dinosaurs. Throw in a T-Rex, a couple raptors, maybe even a Stegosaurus. BAM! Packed theaters.

Roger Rabbit looked more believable than this. I couldnt handle watching another trailer of that. I do wonder how they think that looks good.

I remember reading the whole comics series about 20 years ago and they were awesome. Have looked forward to this for a long time and am excited to see it.

Top cast. Top director. Big budget. Top story.

A lot of haters out there..

I don't think Robert Rodriguez has ever been a "top director." For every Sin City, he has about five like Spy Kids 3D or Adventures of Sharkboy & Lavagirl. Or Sin City 2, for that matter.

Can you honestly look at this trailer and say the movie looks good?

I remember liking the anime movie, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If it has a good story, then it might work, in spite of the odd special effects.

Just to uphold my place as the Mikey of movies ...................

Bad guy who is bad just because someone has to be even though the reasoning will be incredibly shallow and nonsensical
Mentor who will die just before answering any questions
Person who knows answers won't answer for no good reason
Monster kill bot because you can't have enough dinosaurs errr... I mean kill bots in a CGI movie

"I'm with her" gave me Cousin Vinny flashbacks. "I want him" and about a thousand other "I'm with the dude/dudette that just kicked ass" moments.

Is there a shred of an original idea in here?

But, I do hope that I have a "hey Mikey, he likes it" experience with this. But, likely to get Ghost in the machine.

It's looks like Rodriguez and he gets the material. You would never mistake this for Cameron directing. The fact he's producing is a good thing, but I think Rodriguez will own this.

Personally I was surprised to see the trailer today. Guess I've been living under a rock because I had no idea they were working on it. I liked the anime when it came out but then I got REALLY into the manga source material, having read all of them multiple times over. It's an unbelievably good story with a very rich world from which to draw upon. Plenty of material for this to be a franchise if the first one proves successful. The anime barely covered the first book.

I wish they continued on with the anime series and think this one might lend itself better to that format, but I'll take what I can get I suppose. Kind of a bold move to keep Alita's manga big eyes, but after seeing the trailer I gotta admit...I think I like it.

I too, am not a huge fan of over-CGI'd stuff these days, but this is a story that just might call for that, even if it does look odd at first. Again, it's a great story, so if Rodriguez and Cameron can do the source material justice, the film might have shot if raging internet nerds don't shoot it down first, killing the franchise off early unnecessarily like so many others.

I'll see it as well, more out of curiosity to see how the 50-minute story from the original anime was stretched to feature length (same reason I went to see the live action version of Blood: The Last Vampire).

Nope, anime from 90's was just a adaptation of the first 2 books out of almost 9 graphic novels, which is only the first past part of the story. 2 more sequels since came after the first set of mangas and the 3rd is still running. Plenty of story and sci fi goodness. Elysium and a lot of Neil Blomkamps works look like they took inspiration from the Alita universe.

I dunno why all the hate. I am glad someone is taking a stab at this. If we waited for James Cameron to do this it would never have come out. If this does well it will open up for a fresh franchise, with world building that rivals that of the star wars universe. It would be cool to get to see this movie, and say where the technology will by by the 2nd or 3rd sequel. We need movies like this to help push the technology fwd.

The virtual sets and directing using real time rendering will allow for better integrated more believable cg. Movies like this need to forge fwd so that we can get even better cg going fwd. And the fact that its native 3d, from the director of A dame to kill (despite the actual movie, I have heard nothing but praise for its 3D), I think we are going to be in for a nice treat. All you 3D heads in the forum, this I guarantee is going to be the demo disk of 2019, esp you lucky ones with 4k 3D tvs and Or projectors.

A sequence called Motor Ball in this movie is going to be mind blowing. I feel like when James Cameron saw that in the original graphic novel, that is what made him say he is buying the rights to this property.

I hope this is not edge of Tomorrow all over again, where a cool, not as well known Japanese short story/manga came out that was actually incredible came out and nobody went to see it.

I also hope they don't mess it up. I am a fan of the property if you can't tell.

Graphic novels were better than the anime. Just more fleshed out. Its the whole Akira situation. The anime is an absoulute classic, but misses so much context and information. All good. I still liked the 90's animes. They did a decent job. Actually saw it before reading so no bias there. And yeah, we'll watch the movie adaptation and judge on its own merits. Should be a fun ride.
