I went in with raised expectations for this movie and unfortunately, all the best parts were shown in the trailers and TV spots. In fact, I thought the scenes were better presented/edited in that extended trailer than in the movie.
The script is terrible. There is a lot of exposition that even a good actor would struggle with, nevermind Heard and Momoa. The plot was something we've all seen before (evil brother/cousin wants the throne à la Thor/Black Panther), except this time it's in reverse.
The soundtrack is pretty standard fare, with nothing memorable in it. This is especially frustrating, because the final trailer has an excellent track that would have made an amazing Aquaman theme. Unfortunately, it is not in the actual movie.
James Wan's use of pop music in the movie is probably the worst I've ever heard. I don't know what he was thinking with his song selection. People who have seen the movie know what I'm talking about. This movie is meant to be cheesy, but still...
Some reviews mention the lack of chemistry between Momoa and Heard, but it was the lack of chemistry between Temeura Morrison and Nicole Kidman that stood out for me. Cliff Curtis, another Kiwi actor would have been a much better choice for Tom Curry IMO.
This movie isn't all bad though. Some of the visuals are amazing and the action scenes are pretty cool. Jason Momoa is a likeable lead. Amber Heard looks stunning throughout, especially in her formal Atlantean dress. And although much of the humor fell flat for me, it's a fun movie that a lot of people seem to be enjoying this holiday season (Aquaman could very likely be the first DCEU movie to join the billion dollar club). Man of Steel is still my favorite DCEU movie by some margin (it is one Pa Kent death scene away from being one of the best comic book movies regardless of which cinematic universe it belongs to IMO). Right now, I rank Aquaman third, after Wonder Woman. It probably seems like I hated the movie, but I just expected to like it a lot more than I did. Aquaman's success at the box office will probably lead to Warner Bros. using it as the template for future DCEU movies. Hopefully I enjoy it more with a second viewing.
