Digital effects have come a long way in recent years, and filmmakers can do quite a lot in post-production.
That said, for many fans and industry insiders, there's still no complete substitute for old-fashioned practical effects.
That debate is something that has popped up through the development of Aquaman, and it turns out that director James Wan
is embracing the best of both worlds by augmenting practical makeup and costuming with some CGI wizardry.
Explaining the process on social media, The Conjuring director wrote:

Is that a Cylon mermaid in the background? Weird.

I still think I'd have rather seen James Cameron's Aquaman with Vinnie Chase.

The CGI at the beginning (the aquarium scene) is pretty awful, but Atlantis looks amazing. The highlight for me was Black Manta (super cool). I'm a bit concerned about the acting from Momoa and Heard though. In Wonder Woman, Gal had Chris Pine to play off of and carry the load. Whereas, in this movie, neither of the leads are particularly strong actors. Hopefully the supporting cast gets significant screen time. Especially Nicole Kidman.

This was done in 2012 in Kon Tiki (2012) yet the CGI shark especially out of water at 1:40 is a billion times more realistic.
A director or Visual Effects house should be ashamed of such garbage in a $160 million budget Aquaman!!

Kon Tiki was made for a total of 17 mil too. I'll have to check that one out. Do you know the language it was filmed in?

That makes it even more impressive. the Original language is Norwegian: DTS-HD Master Audio
it also has English English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1

Haha. Always loved that story arc. I'm actually kind of surprised it took this long for Hollywood to make it happen.

That's pretty impressive for 6 year old VFX with a tiny fraction of the budget of Aquaman.

My guess for the subpar CGI shark is due to the nature of the way many giant blockbuster films are produced, which is probably lots of "HURRY HURRY HURRY! WE NEED THIS DONE YESTERDAY!" plus the sheer amount of CGI that goes into the whole thing. I'd bet that for the crew who did the CGI in Kon Tiki, it was probably more of a labor of love and the proper time and effort went into it. They did an outstanding job with that one!

OK, I'm sold. This looks like a real fun movie. That chase scene is reminiscent of the ones in Winter Soldier, one of my favorite MCU movies. Judging by this extended trailer, Aquaman will probably be the best DCEU movie to date. Nicole Kidman looks amazing!!

That is exactly what I want from an Aquaman movie. A combination of Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings, underwater and with superheroes.

IMHO, go with low expectations. OTOH, the friend who saw it with me liked it fine, so YMMV.

I went in with raised expectations for this movie and unfortunately, all the best parts were shown in the trailers and TV spots. In fact, I thought the scenes were better presented/edited in that extended trailer than in the movie.

The script is terrible. There is a lot of exposition that even a good actor would struggle with, nevermind Heard and Momoa. The plot was something we've all seen before (evil brother/cousin wants the throne à la Thor/Black Panther), except this time it's in reverse.

The soundtrack is pretty standard fare, with nothing memorable in it. This is especially frustrating, because the final trailer has an excellent track that would have made an amazing Aquaman theme. Unfortunately, it is not in the actual movie.

James Wan's use of pop music in the movie is probably the worst I've ever heard. I don't know what he was thinking with his song selection. People who have seen the movie know what I'm talking about. This movie is meant to be cheesy, but still...

Some reviews mention the lack of chemistry between Momoa and Heard, but it was the lack of chemistry between Temeura Morrison and Nicole Kidman that stood out for me. Cliff Curtis, another Kiwi actor would have been a much better choice for Tom Curry IMO.

This movie isn't all bad though. Some of the visuals are amazing and the action scenes are pretty cool. Jason Momoa is a likeable lead. Amber Heard looks stunning throughout, especially in her formal Atlantean dress. And although much of the humor fell flat for me, it's a fun movie that a lot of people seem to be enjoying this holiday season (Aquaman could very likely be the first DCEU movie to join the billion dollar club). Man of Steel is still my favorite DCEU movie by some margin (it is one Pa Kent death scene away from being one of the best comic book movies regardless of which cinematic universe it belongs to IMO). Right now, I rank Aquaman third, after Wonder Woman. It probably seems like I hated the movie, but I just expected to like it a lot more than I did. Aquaman's success at the box office will probably lead to Warner Bros. using it as the template for future DCEU movies. Hopefully I enjoy it more with a second viewing.

Really and honestly, I've never been to a movie in the theater I disliked more than this. Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard are beautiful without question. Momoa's costume often looked no better than gym pants. The underwater scenes were completely unconvincing. You'd see far more realistic underwater action in Thunderball and I dare say even Sea Hunt. The goal is not realism of course, but neither is it an excuse. These effects looked lazy. At times it was like they didn't even suspend the actors from cables in front of the green screens, rather just had them stand in front of a painted wall. Okay, I hated it. I'm sorry. Not trying to offend fans of the franchise, but I've seen some good movies recently that got bad reviews. I disliked Aquaman from the get go, and actually saw an old couple leave their seats when it was still about 20% from the end. My niece loved it, I told her I did too but it is because I love her.

I walked out of this movie last night in IMAX, and I have NEVER walked out of a movie before! Holy cow Momoa is a bad actor! And the CGI looked worse than the star wars prequels - and on an imax screen its even more noticeable. I'm sorry, but wow.

p.s. the sound was awesome tho...
