While browsing some discs yesterday, I noticed there's a new re-mastered Blu-ray edition of Species with Natasha Henstridge available from Shout Factory. This new 2017 version is supposedly derived from a new 4k scan of an interpositive. And fixes a few video issues with the previous HD releases. It may not be a total slam dunk though. So unless you have very deep pockets, I'd suggest reading some reviews before getting it. One review I read thought the lossless audio was maybe a tad better on the older BD, for example.

I can't really afford this. But might give it a look, and do a comparison with an older version, at some point.

I found a couple of very cheap used copies of Beyond Skyline and Rampage as well. So may also give these a look soon.

The first film has always been my favorite of the bunch. I love all those beautifully designed sets of the alien ship, and what have you. For pure SF action though, Aliens is hard to beat.

A little piece of history for the SW fans. Carrie, Mark and Harrison chatting with Mike Douglas, a couple months after the release of the original Star Wars in 1977. Some interesting details about the casting are discussed in this. And man do they all look young!

Coincidentally, Richard Thomas, the other guest on the show, also went on to play a Skywalker-inspired hero in the somewhat less successful 1980 space opera Battle Beyond the Stars. Thomas was probably the more recognizable celebrity of the four, before the release of Star Wars, for his role as John Boy on "The Waltons", and various other film roles.

Ender's Game can be streamed free w/ads on The Roku Channel right now.

Decent movie. But likely a one-timer for me. Sound on the TRC stream has too much DRC on my setup.

I rented this on Blu-ray from my library before, but only got about a half hour into it before giving up. Not really my kind of movie.

So much of the SF that I've seen lately has been dreary message movies. And I'm afraid Ender's Game probably falls into that category as well.

I was listening to another interview recently with the original Star Wars cast, where Mark Hamill was speculating about how Lucas came up with some of the ideas for the film. His theory was that Lucas wanted to be the Luke Skywalker character, and go on all those fantastic adventures to all those fantastic places. And save the universe. (I am paraphrasing btw, but I think that was the general thrust of his comments.)

I think Mark was probably right on the money on that. And Lucas got alot of that inspiration and sense of wonder from the comics and serials he watched and read as a kid. The original Star Wars films are certainly far from perfect. But that spark of imagination that Lucas had seems to be lost in alot of SF nowadays. Which is too bad.

Anyway, on to (hopefully) greener pastures. And some empty carbs.

I submit "Freaks". It's a good one. It certainly crosses genres but in the end, squarely fits as science-fiction. It keeps you guessing about what's going on. Interesting premise and a slightly different take on another popular movie franchise.

Watched the 1958 Blob with McQueen on Crackle. It's definitely a little dated. But still pretty fun. I think the '88 version was probably better though, at least in terms of the effects.

Also watched Star Trek: First Contact, with Alice Krige. Not my favorite Trek flick. But it was not a bad way to pass the time. Frakes directed. And it plays a bit like a long episode of Next Gen with some slightly better effects.

"Picard" is supposed to get under way soon. Series was already renewed for another season, and hasn't even hit the web yet.

Also watched some of Beyond Skyline on Blu-ray. I was short on time though, and fast-forwarded through some of the less interesting bits of the movie. Based on what I saw, I'd recommend giving it a look. It reminded me at times of Transformers, and Independence Day. If you enjoy stuff like that, then this should be right up your alley. Most of the effects were also pretty good, considering the somewhat limited budget of 20 Mil.

I'll have to watch it again when I have more time, and can concentrate a little better on the story. I think I need to rewatch the first movie though, so I have a better idea what's goin on.

Also watched some of Rogue One on DVD. I was not a fan of the digital look on this, or on Beyond Skyline. But the effects and visuals were certainly top-notch! I wish I'd found the story and characters as engaging as the visuals. I'd like to see this in HD some time. But my library only had the SD-DVD.

Both of the above movies were FTVs. Also, happy MLK day!
