What are 5 essential comedy flicks per decade?

Can comedy be essential?

Not really sure. But maybe when it's Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, or The Marx Bros. Or possibly one of my favorite duos...

Anyway, give me yer 5 essentials of the genre (and more if you like) for each decade if you can, while I think some of mine over. And yes, I did steal the idea for this from these other threads...

What are 5 essential scifi flicks per decade?
What are 5 essential fantasy flicks per decade?
Your top 5 favourite movies from each decade

Why we're only limiting it to 5 per decade, I'm not really sure.

As a die-hard sci-fi nut, it is essential that I offset it a bit with Comedy/Action. It will take much thought to pick 5, though...

Essential is hard to do...Comedy tastes vary so much and some of the funniest bits are not in pure comedies.

I beg to differ.

This Is Spinal Tap, Airplane, The Princess Bride, Diner, and Raising Arizona are my top 5.

Other ones that are close: Heathers, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Trading Places, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Monty Python's Meaning of Life (would be in the top 5 if it were consistent), Ferris Bueller's Day Off, A Christmas Story, Tootsie, Eating Raoul, The War of the Roses, She's Gotta Have It, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Big Trouble in Little China, Beetlejuice, Something Wild, Bull Durham, Hairspray, The Stunt Man, My Favorite Year, After Hours, Ghostbusters, S.O.B., and Victor/Victoria.

Edit: There is also this little known comedy called Water which I thought was funny.

Not really differing, you can't throw a rock without hitting a winner. I love all the ones you listed.

Not a joke a minute. Dark humor, the Tarantino calling card. I probably interpret it more than most for these circumstances. Similar appreciation for Kubrick.

Others with edge, Dr. Strangelove, The Loved One, Local Hero, Fargo, Frankie and Johnny, Sideways, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

I thought of one for the 2010's 'This Is the End'. Seth Rogen makes a movie about the end times and how well known actors/Celebrities deal with it. What makes it funny is the actors play a (maybe exaggerated version of themselves) dealing with/Messing up at the end of the world. IMDB nailed it ..6 Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves. Never go to Franco's house when facing an apocalypse

Seth Rogen is on the list of, "Can you believe this guy made it in Hollywood?" No offense, Seth, this phenomenon used to be the exception, now it's the norm. Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Adam Sandler, Ashton Kutcher, etc.

Boy, did N.K. ever overrate this movie.

Oops... typed the wrong movie.

It was supposed to be "Home Alone" and not Airplane.

Was just looking over some of the other lists here again, and realized I did not include any Audrey Hepburn films on my list, unless you count Lavender Hill Mob, where she has a small walk-on. Added Donen's Charade, with Cary Grant to the honorable mentions for the 1960's.

How To Steal a Million with Peter O'Toole was also kind of fun, if memory serves...

Also in the crime caper category is 1969's The Italian Job with Michael Caine. Didn't see this one mentioned yet.
