Movies Like 'Upgrade' & 'Overlord'?

Recently watched both and loved them. Fun, action and/or sci-fi, surprises/twists. Unexpectedly enjoyable gems.

Are there similar movies you guys can recommend?

Off the top of my head, here are similar ones I've already seen and love (or at least like well enough):
- Below (2002)
- Dark City (1998)
- District 9 (2009)
- Dredd (2012)
- The Hidden (1987)
- Mimic (1997)
- Pitch Black (2000)
- Tremors (1990)

BTW, I have tried tastedive.com, but it has mixed results, and most are better known movies I've already seen.

Maybe "Limitless" and "Ex Machina" might fit in there.

Cool, you'll probably like it.

I forgot all about The Machinist (2004). That's a gnarly watch right there.

Many great ones listed, seems you might like some of the F(un) word in your movies so I'd add Kong Skull Island, Oblivion, Attack the Block, Await Further Instructions, Bumblebee, Outlander, Hotel Artemis, Super 8, and the best sci fi movie in the last 10 years: Beyond Skyline.

Ha ha. Loved 'Bladerunner 2049', will check out 'Beyond Skyline', which I never heard of. Need to see 'Skyline' before seeing 'Beyond Skyline'?

You do not need to see Skyline, Beyond sort of runs parallel but goes deeper. In a weird but awesome way.

It and Annihilation are very strong imho.

Prospect is a pretty strong sci fi as well. It's not trying to build a universe or a franchise but is just a good story and has a nice visual style PLUS Pedro Pascal.

Another recent one that was on the head trip side was High Life with Robert Pattinson, it's a bit moody, fairly sexual, and keeps you interested.

Both are nice small scale big idea movies.

Quick shout out to Life (2017) a really strong modern creature feature as well as Downsizing. A pleasant surprise that one is.

Overlord to me is like a low budget theme, experiments/zombies/nazi's etc..., with a big budget ($38 million). I do not think that there are a lot movies like it. The Revenant (2012)(directed by D Kerry Prior) came to mind which is low budget.

Watched 'Kin' (2018) last night. Liked it, but not enough substance to fill a 1hr 42min run time; think it would've worked better as a 45min or so TV episode. Felt a little slow, with story dragged longer.

Skyline is pretty bad. And not the good bad. Beyond Skyline is actually a really fun movie.
