I agree and disagree it's the writers opinion and not facts. Only facts matter. (I'll now go into the bunker before the flame wars start )

Initially I thought it's just trolling but it's a mixed list. Knocked Up is overrated, I mean why is it even on a "overrated" list, with Citzen Kane no less.

I do agree Forrest Gump is way overrated

From the stated premise of the article:
Quote:
Just because something is highly acclaimed doesn't mean it's not overrated. Here's our list of popular and profitable movies that don't live up to the hype.
It would have been more accurate if they had added "imo" or "in the opinion of some" at the end there. Maybe "our list" covers it though.

Hard to either argue against or support such a contention as long as they can find at least one person, including themselves, who doesn't think as highly of a movie as the most enthusiastic fan of it. And it doesn't mean the movie does not still deserve to be "highly acclaimed," as mentioned in the premise.

That said, these are almost always fun lists to discuss.

Just off the top of my head, here is "my list" of overrated movies:

Avatar
The Dark Knight
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Black Panther
The Godfather, Part II
The Shawshank Redemption
Avengers: Endgame
Titanic
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
Pulp Fiction
Raging Bull
The Silence of the Lambs
Saving Private Ryan
The Sting
Nashville
The African Queen
Good Will Hunting
The Shape of Water
The Shining
12 Years a Slave

The writer was evidently tasked with writing an article to get page-views and elicit responses. Don't see any merit in listings like this.

Idioms that come to mind:

'One man's trash is another man's treasure'.

'One size does not fit all'.

'One man's meat is another man's poison.'

'One man's ceiling is another man's floor.'

'One's man's pleasure is another's pain.'

'One man's loss is another man's profit.'

'One man's fault is another man's lesson.'

And I'd wear it with pride, as a badge of honor.

I think for a film to be overrated, it should be a film that most are aware of, and a good portion of them think it's good.

hitchfan has the right idea, even though I disagree with the inclusion of The Dark Knight, ET, Godfather II, Titanic, Pulp Fiction, The Shining.

Field of Dreams, Braveheart and Forrest Gump are brilliant movies. Other than that I can agree with everything else.

All but one "Best Picture" winner (Gladiator) of this century is overrated.

What't the point of stating the obvious? Of course its an opinion by the very nature of the topic.

Ah, not necessarily. The title of the article is "These are the most overrated movies ever." The use of the word "most" suggests a quantifiable, measurable amount relative to all the others and not merely a matter of subjective opinion. That's why inserting a qualifier, such as "in our opinion" or as seems to be the case in many of the write-ups, "in this other critic's opinion", would have kept that title a bit more accurate. Or just "Overrated Movies" would have certainly done it, which relates to your assertion regarding the topic.

Your assertion, on the other hand, "ALL movies are overrated, btw," is stating the obvious in that I submit that it is possible to find at least one person who even thinks "MANOS: The Hands of Fate" (speaking of hands) is a pretty darn good movie if not the greatest movie of all time. Therefore, it would be arguably "overrated" by at least that one person. Perhaps the grandniece of the director.

One for me, which will probably get me beaten up, is Blade Runner. I've watched it a few times, and I enjoy it well enough. But I don't get the almost legendary status it has amongst many.

Interesting people say Avatar. For quite a few years, it was the best looking image that one could display on their tv or screen, nothing else came close. Also a first rate surround sound presentation and still is. The disc also had a nice THX sound demo, after the credits, which was always a nice thrill to those sitting here watching it.

I find both Avatar and Titanic to be very overrated. For Avatar it's:

-Horrible simplistic dialogue
-Rehashed plot (DWW was a better film)
-Paints ex military as backwards violent morons
-Plot holes you can float an aircraft carrier through
-Rehased characters from Cameron's other films
-Unobtanium. I hope the sequels pursue can'tfindium or hardtogetium.

It is pretty though.

As far as the rest of that list, I didn't agree with either Hughes film or Citizen Kane being included.

I agree with most of those except Inception and Fight Club. Those 2 are great.

By the way, New Rockstars has a brand new video on Inception which goes very deep into the maze:
