Solo: A Star Wars Story in the dark

I just rewatched Solo: A Star Wars Story on UHD
It's an odd choice that most of the movie should be so dark
I can't see a reason for why it should be so murky
Maybe that's one of the reasons it didn't do well
I remember a lot of talk about people who saw it in movie theaters complaining that it was hard to see what was going on
Some scenes late in the movie look better

It certainly didn't help mask the awful casting choice for Han Solo.

The cinematographer is known for dark movies. Strange choice for Star Wars.

I think I understand why they chose that, but the end product really needs a very big screen and a very dark room. In a good commercial theater it was on darker side. Home screens are whole nuther thing.

I watched it on my 120" screen in the 21:9 format with JVC projector (plenty of contrast)

That fella did great. Nearly perfect young Han, exactly who he should have been seeing we all know how he wound up. Young Han all ready to grab the galaxy by the balls, Old Han still grabbing the balls but understanding it's a job.

Personally I'd rather see three more of those Solo flicks than the main ones.

Nope, not only was he not the right guy, he was more than a little short to be a Han Solo.

It's murky either because of choice or because or poor mastering.

You can enhance it by lowering your brightness value and raising your contrast value, but you would do that just to view this film.

So you're telling me they didn't have leg elongation on lock but I'm supposed to believe you can dump a robot AI into a ship?

I didn't think he did that bad of a job. The movie wasn't great, but he was ok.

It's dangerous outside of the horror thread . Interesting question though..

Yep, it was a conscious effort on the part of Bradford Young known for experimenting with low-light cinematography. First they tried blaming the dark picture problem on theater projector lamps until this film arrived on home video. Interestingly when Ron Howard came onboard at the last minute he told Young he would not have been his first choice for cinematographer.
