What are the “must have” 4K blu rays?

I just got a 65” LG OLED and I want to get some 4K movies. But honestly, this TV does such an amazing job with 1080p blu ray content that I wonder if the 4K is worth it?

I rented one 4K disc - Avengers Endgame - and I really couldn’t see a noticeable difference over the 1080p! Am I missing something? Are there some 4K discs that are just “wow, you’ve gotta get this” superior?

Please opine.

Blade Runner 2049 = Standard answer and must own
Lucy = Not the best movie but entertaining enough and amazing picture
Men in Black trilogy = older movie that stunned me in the quality of transfer when I watched.
Annihilation = Interesting movie with different landscape scenery and when it gets colorful, it gets colorful.
Coco and How to Train Your Dragon series = Are my favorite animations I have in 4K and is stunning to my eyes.

The biggest thing for me and why the improved quality matters is I sit 6' away from my 65" OLED vs my living room 10' from my 55" LG 4K LCD.

Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy.

Sometimes DVD is better than Blu-ray, and sometimes Blu-ray is better than 4K UHD. Each transfer requires good tech, good thought, good application. Not always is there a success. There's also your needs (likes, availability, costs), and AV system capability to consider.

There are websites and AVS threads to help you navigate through disc choices. Take advantage of them. They'll save time and money.

With these guidelines, get what you like, not what I like. Good luck, have fun.

Seconding Blade Runner 2049.

End Game was a very underwhelming transfer, almost criminally so given the context. My favorite MCU 4K from an image quality POV has been Thor: Ragnarok, but I hear the Guardians of the Galaxy 4Ks are really good.

Adding Mad Max: Fury Road, still remains the most impressed I've been by any 4K image since upgrading my TV last year, and I've only got a lowly TCL 65R617. With your OLED, it should be absolutely smashing.

But yeah, I had the same reaction to 1080p BRs and how good they looked.

Also, off topic but just covering off, make sure to check out Planet Earth II (disc or Netflix). The image on Netflix had me drooling so I imagine the disc is bonkers.

OP should try this thread instead.

I've a TCL 55R613. As long as I do not veer too far away from the main vantage point, it's not shabby at all at $400. Of course, OLED would be better, but not $1,600 more.

For large venue, can't beat a JVC (under $5k) with a 120" screen, especially sports (mostly 2k).

4K HDR (mastered in 4K):

2001 (this is a must have)
BR2019
Interstellar
Passengers

The above are stunning in 4K on a large screen.

4K HDR Mastered in 2K:

Valerian (fantastic use of P3 colour gamut)

I like BR2049, but it’s a bit of a slog - not something I’d watch repeatedly.

Here’s my list of discs I’ll be picking up. If you guys think any of these are a waste and I should just stick with BR let me know. Thanks!

- Alita
- Avengers Infinity
- Avengers End Game (already got)
- The Fifth Element
- Gladiator
- Guardians 1
- Guardians 2
- The LEGO Movie
- The LEGO Batman Movie
- Mad Max
- The Martian
- Matrix Trilogy
- Passengers
- Ready Player One
- Star Trek (2009)
- Star Trek Into Darkness
- Thor Ragnorak
- Valerian
- Wreck It Ralph

They are all worthy titles, even if they weren't 4K.

Right but I’ve already got them on BR. Question is whether they’re worth the upgrade to 4k?

Already have and upgrade to 4K for picture only? My opinion, No. Average viewer wouldn't notice much of a difference between the two on an OLED and the further you sit back, less of a difference will be noticed. My eyes are 6' from my 65" OLED. Now if you have a sound system capable for the full Atmos experience, then some of those titles that don't have that soundtrack on the Blu-Ray, aren't Disney produced, and don't cost more than $20 to upgrade to, then yes. If choosing between the $19.99 Blu-Ray and the $24.99 4K getting new, then get the 4K as a general rule is a good choice.

Another, critical aspect is how accurate have you calibrated your display.
A BR PQ should be/could be "alot" better with a calibrated player/display - than a 4k uncalibrated display. Work on a good calibrated set - 1st,,,
YMMV,

Not always that easy. I suggest you consult bluraydotcom and view their scorings for particular Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases. Blu-ray releases can differ. For instance, for Gladiator (2000) they give the 2010 Blu-ray release a much better video rating than the 2009 Blu-ray release. Therefore, if you have the 2009 Blu-ray, you might consider choosing the 2010 Blu-ray or the newer 4K UHD, which is also scored well. Good luck, have fun.
