Parasite

This is quite a good movie, has some dark humor but overall just really well done. Certainly makes some of the garbage coming out look like what it is ,trash. I was loaned a copy and had never heard of it. I've pre-ordered the disc. It does look like Fandango is streaming it atm.

Highly recommend.

Tack and DD/DTS like this.

I went in with high expectations and was disappointed. The set up was great but then it went places that I didn't really like and didn't think the movie earned. I would say B-. It doesn't deserve the uniformly high praise it is getting.

My wife and I found it to be a well-written, well-acted and very entertaining black comedy / thriller.

My previous comment on ADU's thread:

"Parasite - by Bong Joon Ho of The Host (sea monster) and Memories of Murder (human monster) fame, a Golden Globe winner about class warfare and inequality."

Now it's an Oscar nominated film.

Since most folks do not watch films with subtitle, it would be great to change the setting to UK with its famous Upstairs, Downstairs series which I have never watched. This would give Bong a bigger following other than our art house audience. I watch Dark with subtitle on rather than the English speaking version.

I just watched this on bluray the other night -- liked it quite a bit.

Somewhat skeptical of a TV show adaptation unless he plans to go the Tarantino route (similar to netflix & Hateful Eight)... and simply expands the existing film to 4 hrs or so as single episodes. I'm not sure how they can do an english version without it being a remake though, so it's kind of weird to hear that may be an option.

Congrats to the director and his crew winning 4 Oscars this year. Now I've to re-watch Memories of Murder and The Host, featuring Doona Bae from Cloud Atlas and one of the Vengeance Trilogy.

I thought for sure 1917 was a lock for Best Picture but was confident on Parasite winning Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. Congrats to BJH and the team, #LetsGetDrunkUntilNextMorning

This is just another idiotic decision by the Academy. Its a decent film but not a Best Picture movie.

Surprised Parasite won... figured 1917 had it locked up.

Parasite was deserving in my opinion. I had it (or Once upon a Time) as my best pic choices, at least out of the nominees I have seen (haven't seen Joker or Little Women yet).

"Joker" would have been my pick, but "Parasite" will do just fine. IMO, both of those movies were far more interesting than the relatively-bland and underwhelming "1917".

Themes explored in Joker and Parasite seems much more relevant and timely compared to 1917.

I would have thought Once Upon a Time would have won, not that I cared for it, but it just seemed more fitting given that it is an ode to Hollywood. The problem with Parasite is it's meant for a Korean audience and it's difficult to pick on some of the finer subtleties unless you're someone who has grown up in Korea or who has grown up with Korean culture. In any case, the film was well made and the fact a foreign film won breathes a little new life into Hollywood. I'd certainly recommend watching it, but do yourself a favor and watch it without any set expectations.

At first viewing, of course it would be impossible for non-Koreans to pick up on the nuances. For example, Korean language is hierarchical, how you speak to your elders is different from how you would to talk to someone younger, or social status. There are scenes where "Jessica" breaches those boundaries when she's talking to Mrs. Park, and this movie is about the invisible boundaries constructed by society. Parasite, however, has so many layers that people are enjoying it even if they are not understanding all the layers. There is something timely and relevant to the core theme of Parasite, which is a testament to it's popularity.

I found the film impressive given it's complicated structure and it's ability to remain coherent. At no point do you really know what to expect and the film keeps you fully engaged at every turn. With that said, I did feel that I was left out of the loop and in a big way.

Spoiler!

This is only true for American audiences and its pretty sad and makes me angry. A lot of people will also look down upon you for turning on subtitles for English content and make fun of you, its ridiculous.

As far as I'm concerned, Koreans make the best movies, I've yet to see a thriller/crime/horror movie from Korea that wasn't fantastic and much better than usual Hollywood fare.

Did see 1917, but there are other WWI movies in the same caliber, such as Path of Glory or Gallipoli. Unlike speed swimming, most awards are subjective. As for the other nominated films, they are not my type.

I love international films and don’t mind subtitles at all. Don’t want to keep relying on Hollywood for films.
