Movie/TV Trivia

TRIVIA---Frank Sinatra signed to star in DIRTY HARRY, but he withdrew after a broken wrist sustained in the fight scene in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE would have prevented from properly firing Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum. When Sinatra left, so did director Irvin Kershner (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK). Actors who turned the role down included Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Paul Newman, George C. Scott, Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum.

TRIVIA---before George Takei was the helmsman for the starship Enterprise in STAR TREK, he was the helmsman for the Japanese destroyer Amagiri that rammed John F. Kennedy's PT boat in the 1963 JFK biomovie PT 109.
The 1963 movie starred Cliff Robertson, who won the Best Actor Oscar for CHARLY, and later starred in BRAINSTORM and the SPIDER-MAN trilogy. PT 109 also featured Robert Blake, of The Little Rascals fame and BARETTA, who was later found liable in a civil case for the murder of his wife.
A new PT 109 movie is underway.

TRIVIA---More James Bond movie trivia.
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS was Timothy Dalton's first movie playing James Bond. Walter Gotell returned as retired KGB Gen. Gogol.
Dalton and Gotell also appeared in the TALES FROM THE CRYPT episode "Werewolf Concerto" with Dalton playing Lokai, and Gotell playing Mr. Hertz.

They asked Edward James Olmos to play the captain in Star Trek: Next Generation.

wiki:
Olmos was contacted about playing the captain of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) on Star Trek:The Next Generation when it was in pre-production in 1986, but declined.

TUESDAY APRIL 7

TRIVIA---before John Ratzenberger played Cliff Clavin, the blowhard mailman, and Frances Sternhagen played his mother on CHEERS, they appeared in the Sean Connery sci fi movie OUTLAND.

TRIVIA---in the Vietnam War movie FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER, director John Milius chose his friend Ed O'Neill (MARRIED...WITH CHILDREN) to play the JAG prosecutor in the dramatic court martial scene. When the test audience saw O'Neill appear, they howled with laughter because they saw henpecked loser Al Bundy instead of the JAG prosecutor. The role was then recast with Fred Dalton Thompson who played the head district attorney in LAW & ORDER.
A Paramount Pictures source said, "He's so recognized with the comedy series that marketing research screenings played weirdly. When he came on screen the audiences laughed at him, even though he was playing a serious role as a Navy captain presiding over a court-martial hearing. They had to recast the role after the film was shot."
O'Neill said, "People had no idea I was in it. As soon as they see me, it's Al Bundy in the Army. They crack up. The setup was insane."

TRIVIA---in Ray Harryhausen's THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, the New York policeman who shoots the Rhedosaurus with his pistol and is then eaten, later reappears alive and shoots the Rhedosarus with a rifle.
Also, the Army sniper who kills the Rhedosaurus with a radioactive bullet is played by then-unknown Lee Van Cleef.

TRIVIA---in KOLCHAK: NIGHT STALKER, Jack Grinnage played reporter Ron Updyke, who was Carl Kolchak's newsroom foil. After he left acting, Grinnage became a prop maker. His most famous prop was John Malkovich's rabbit's foot which carried bullets for the gun he shot Clint Eastwood with in IN THE LINE OF FIRE.
Jeff Rice, the Las Vegas newspaper reporter, whose unpublished novel inspired two hit Kolchak tv movies, two Kolchak tv series and THE X-FILES, died in obscurity in 2015.

TRIVIA---legendary stunt driver/actor Bill Hickman is known for the car chase scenes in BULLITT and THE FRENCH CONNECTION. In PATTON, Hickman played Gen. George S. Patton's driver. Ironically, Patton was killed seven months after Germany surrendered when his staff car had a low-speed collision with an Army truck even though the others in the car only suffered minor injuries.

Thanks for that. There wouldn't have been several DHs done with anyone but Clint. The closest I can see as Harry Callahan is McQueen (about 40 at time of filming), but he'd done Bullitt (1968) in SF just three years prior. Too close, same place.

Dirty Harry (1971) still resonates as the strongest in the series, in no small part to Andrew Robinson. I thought we were going to see a lot more from his career. I'm guessing he did , too.

TRIVIA---in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, Sean Connery's last official James Bond movie, Norman Burton played CIA agent Felix Leiter. Burton's biggest role was his horseback appearance as the Hunt Leader in PLANET OF THE APES.

In the movie's Las Vegas casino scene, comedian Shady Tree (Leonard Barr, Dean Martin's uncle) has two beautiful companions at his side. On his right was supposedly Valerie Perrine, who was nominated for an Academy Award in LENNY, but Perrine denied it's her. On his left is supposedly Cassandra Peterson, better known as horror queen Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. who claimed it was her on the left. However, 007 MAGAZINE said Pat Gill and Judy Ritsko are the real women in the scene, and Ritsko plays the topless dancer Bond talks to backstage.

In the movie's famous car chase scene, James Bond evaded pursuing police cars by slipping his Mustang through a narrow alley by tilting the Mustang on its right wheels. However, a filming mistake occurred when the Mustang exited the alley tilted on its left wheels. Because it was impractical to reshoot the entire scene, Sean Connery and Jill St. John reshot the film showing the Mustang tilted from its right wheels to four wheels and then to its left wheels---even the alley was supposedly too narrow for a car on four wheels to begin with.

TRIVIA---character actor Harry Lauter appeared in two classic sci fi movies about aliens landing in Washington, DC: EARTH VS. FLYING SAUCERS and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. In EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, Lauter played the generator technician who is vaporized by the invading aliens. In THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, Lauter played the platoon leader who greets the benevolent alien Klaatu who is then shot by a trigger-happy soldier.

In EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, Lauter played the generator technician who is vaporized by the invading aliens.

In THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, Lauter played the platoon leader when the benevolent alien Klaatu emerges from his spaceship and is then shot by a trigger-happy soldier.

TRIVIA---in Steven Spielberg's 1941, Dan Aykroyd's M3 Lee "Lulubelle" tank is named after Humphrey Bogart's tank "Lulubelle" in SAHARA. Ackroyd's "Lulubelle" was really a different armored vehicle that was being used as a target on a US Air Force gunnery range and was rebuilt to look like an M3 Lee.

TRIVIA---in AIR FORCE ONE, child actress Liesel Matthews played Alice, the daughter of President James Marshall (Harrison Ford). Matthews is the niece of Hyatt Hotel founder Jay Pritzker and is an heiress to the Hyatt fortune which is valued at $15 billion.

TRIVIA---in the Elvis Presley movie IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR, crop duster pilot Presley tells his co-pilot Gary Lockwood that he is leaving the crop dusting business to join the space program. I've toured the inside and grounds of the Biltmore a couple times. It's a pretty amazing place and sits on one of the most beautiful Appalachian foothills settings you can imagine. It has an indoor pool and bowling alley in the basement. It's not that far from Asheville, NC, which is a cool little city.

TRIVIA---more James Bond movie trivia.
In Ian Fleming's novels, James Bond was a chain smoker, smoking up to 60-70 cigarettes a day.
In the movies, Sean Connery's Bond smoked cigarettes like the Bond in the novels. Roger Moore's Bond smoked cigars as Moore did in real life. George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton had Bond smoking cigarettes occasionally. Pierce Brosnan's Bond was the first smoke-free Bond. In TOMORROW NEVER DIES, he gives a cigarette to a Russian sentry, then knocks him out and states, "Filthy habit." In reality, Brosnan was a heavy cigar smoker who started at nine years old and got hooked later, "I got hooked onto them when I was doing REMINGTON STEELE." Daniel Craig, a heavy smoker, did not want his Bond to be a smoker, “I don’t wish for [Bond] to smoke. Fleming wrote a Bond who smoked 60 cigarettes a day. I can’t do that and then run two-and-a-half miles down a road, it just doesn’t tie in."
Fleming, like James Bond, was a chain smoker and smoked about 80 cigarettes a day which was a factor in his death at 53 of a heart attack.

In the James Bond movies, Sean Connery was a cigarette smoker like Bond in Ian Fleming's novels.

Fleming, like James Bond, was a chain smoker and smoked about 80 cigarettes a day which was a factor in his death at 53 of a heart attack.

TRIVIA---ROOSTER COGBURN, the sequel to John Wayne's Oscar-winning TRUE GRIT, was written by Martin Julien, which was the pseudonym for actress Martha Hyer, the wife of Hal B. Wallis, who was the producer of the two movies and also CASABLANCA and THE MALTESE FALCON.
Hyer was nominated for an Oscar in SOME CAME RUNNING which starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine.

I always thought that the character of Plenty O'Toole in the film looked a bit like Elvira...

Plenty was in fact played though by Natalie Wood's younger sister, Lana Wood (née Svetlana Gurdina).

^ Lana and Natalie with their mother Maria Zakharenko.

Both of the Wood's parents were child refugees from the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922. And Natalie's original birthname was Natalia Zakharenko (or Natasha, for short). Missing from the above photo is their older half-sister Olga Tatulova.

Lana has appeared in numerous TV series over her acting career. And she also became a producer. She also posed nude in the April, 1971 issue of Playboy magazine.

TRIVIA---During the filming of the steamy 9 1/2 WEEKS, the relationship between stars Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger was very unpleasant. Basinger said, “Kissing Mickey Rourke was like kissing an ashtray...I hated him sometimes." However, Rourke's hostility towards Basinger was actually suggested by director Adrian Lyne, who wanted it to create authentic on-screen tension between the two stars. Later, Rourke and Basinger mended their relationship, and Rourke complimented Basinger by saying, “That f*ckin’ Kim Basinger was hot as sh*it, I used to go home with a boner every night. Really. That was no fun…”

TRIVIA---famous tv chef Julia Child got her first culinary experience in World War II working as a research assistant for the OSS, the predecessor to the CIA, where she helped develop a shark repellent.
During World War II, Child was turned down by the Woman's Army Corps (WAC) because, at 6' 2", she was too tall. However, the OSS was glad to have her, and she began as a typist/research assistant to Gen. William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan, the head of the OSS. Child later joined the OSS Emergency Sea Rescue Experiment Section where she helped develop the shark repellent that repelled sharks from Allied servicemen and OSS explosives intended for the Nazis, "Child's solution was to experiment with cooking various concoctions as a shark repellent,,,[which] marked Child's first foray into the world of cooking ..."
Child was then sent to Ceylon and China where she met her future husband, OSS Officer Paul Child. She was awarded the Emblem of Meritorious Civilian Service as head of the Registry of the OSS Secretariat.
In 1948, Child worked for the US Information Agency in Paris and enrolled in the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu culinary school which led to her future as the popular tv chef.

Child received a Peabody Award for THE FRENCH CHEF tv series.

TRIVIA---the well-documented feud between Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger in the ironically-titled TERMS OF ENDEARMENT included Winger reportedly lifting her skirt and farting at MacLaine. Winger commented on reported physical altercations with MacLaine, "There might have been a scuffle. I don't remember. I mean, we were wild, you know."
For the EVENING STAR sequel, the producer wanted to use a photo of Winger, and MacLaine said, “The producer called Debra and asked if we could use it, and Debra said, ‘Sure, just make sure that Shirley doesn’t use it as a dartboard.’”

TRIVIA---in PREDATOR, Kevin Peter Hall (7'-2") played the deadly alien hunter. At the end of the movie, Hall also played the pilot of the helicopter that rescued Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Jean-Claude van Damme was originally going to play the Predator, but van Damme quit because he wasn't going to be seen inside the Predator costume. The original costume was rejected as being too silly-looking, so Schwarzenegger recommended creature-designer Stan Winston who worked with Schwarzenegger on James Cameron's THE TERMINATOR. While on an airliner, Winston showed his Predator sketches to Cameron. It was Cameron who suggested that Winston add the unique mandibles to the Predator.

Schwarzenegger's former commanding officer, Major General Phillips, was played by veteran character actor RG Armstrong, who was a former classmate of Andy Griffith's at the University of North Carolina.

TRIVIA---Burt Reynolds, in his autobiography MY LIFE, commented on the DELIVERANCE rape scene involving Ned Beatty and the hillbilly played by William McKinney, “I swear to God, McKinney really wanted to hump Ned. And I think he was going to. He had it up, and he was going to bang him. Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I ran into the scene, dove on McKinney, and pulled him off Ned. [director John] Boorman helped hold him down. Ned, crying with rage and fear, found a big stick and started beating McKinney on the head.” When Reynolds asked Boorman why he took so long to stop filming, he replied, “I was waiting for you to run in. I knew when you ran in that I’d taken the audience to breaking point.”

TRIVIA---STAR TREK historian Mark A. Altman said John Belushi's last day alive was spent on the film set of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN before he died of a drug overdose, "Also an interesting story, one day John Belushi came to visit the set of STAR TREK II… He came because he wanted to perfect his [William] Shatner impersonation. So he came and watched Shatner on set all day. And that night, they wanted to have him sing and play The Blues Brothers at the wrap party, and they were going to ask him. And that night was the night he died of a drug overdose at the Chateau Marmont."

Thanks, Ben. A Nashville to Asheville (293 miles) motoring tour might be a possibility when COVID-19 craziness subsides.
