WSEE just down the I-90 in Erie used a helo lift to install their new RF 21 antenna one year ago; here's what it looked like:

WUTV made another tolling request to extend their CP deadline and extend the STA to operate from WNLO's old facility.
https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/da...30786&goBack=N
https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/da...0076b&goBack=N
In the narrative, they say the helicopter crew is now scheduled for June 20th, and they will be installing WNYO's final antenna at the same time:
Quote:
WUTV was assigned to transition to channel 32 in Phase 4 of the repack. WUTV’s construction of its permanent facilities has been delayed due to equipment delivery and crew delays. Most recently the helicopter crew which was scheduled to install WUTV’s permanent top-mount antenna on May 26, 2020 was redeployed to fight forest fires in California, making the antenna installation date uncertain. In addition, travel by WUTV’s engineers, tower crews and transmitter crews has been hampered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in further delays.

As of this filing, WUTV is operating with interim facilities from the former WLNO facilities on its post-repack channel 32 pursuant to the STA in LMS File No. 0000105845. WUTV plans to continue to use the WLNO facilities as interim facilities on its post-repack channel until a helicopter crew is available and the permanent antenna is installed, an installation which WUTV plans to co-ordinate with installation of the permanent post-repack antenna for co-located station WNYO-TV. Because of the time needed to install the permanent antenna, WUTV will not be able to fully complete construction of its permanent post-repack facilities by the expiration date of its current STA, with the helicopter lift now scheduled for June 20, 2020, and therefore seeks to continue to operate using the interim facilities.

What on earth is that weird antenna design and what is the 'top hat'?

It's a coaxial slot design, giving around 9 or 10 db power gain to their brand-new transmitter, made by Alive Telecom, a Chicago company that's "makin' out like bandits" as a result of the Repack. All their stuff is "top shelf" though.

And the "top hat" is for the WICU (RF 12) antenna which shares the tower with co-owned WSEE. There's also supposed to be an RF 32 LPTV lower on that stick, but we'll never be able to get it here because of WUTV.

Ok, what is WICU's type called, strange, for a high band antenna, it's small.

Here is the WICU antenna arriving at the site in May, 2019:

WICU is using the same kind of antenna type, only it's longer (and has less gain, too) because it's cut for RF 12, and made by the same company.

The RF 12 antenna is mounted on top of the RF 21 antenna, allowing them to diplex the two channels, which is a very efficient way to run their operation. This is one of the (few) advantages of having two stations owned and operated by the same company!

Ok, you said the top antenna is WICU, but the above post you have that as WICU.

Right. That image is from the day that the truck arrived in Erie from the factory with the RF 21 and RF 12 antennas.

WNLO/WIVB Full Power

WIVB/WNLO at full power. Getting a very staple signal at Wellsville. WPXJ Ion booms here, but nice to have a local channel with local news back again. Thanks WIVB it is good to have your programming back over the air again. Hopefully WKBW gets up to full power soon.

Doesn't look like it from Toronto. WIVB was coming in well last night here too but gone this morning. WGRZ is coming in fine this morning - maybe I misunderstand but I thought WIVB at full power would be at least as strong as WGRZ here.

No signal visible after 8 am in Toronto on Thursday. Could they have powered down again for tower work around 8 am?

I lost the signal at 8 AM this morning. They clearly powered back down. But it was an awesome signal until 8 AM. Clearly something is going on, that they needed to power back down.

Probably unrelated, but interesting: Scott Levin on WGRZ's 5 p.m. news had an item Tuesday apologizing to "our over-the-air viewers in WNY and Southern Ontario" saying that their engineers are working on the signal. It looked the same to me when I checked it at that time. Maybe they're also doing some tower work this week and have been going back and forth to their auxiliary? "Tis the season to do tower work!

Have confirmed with John Carroll at WIVB that work on the new antenna is complete, but the workers are removing rigging equipment from the tower today,so they are switching antennas periodically.

Hopefully by Friday, they will be on the new antenna permanently and at full power.

You guys in the "716" with spec analyzers: RF 17 is off, and check out RF 23 this afternoon; looks like WBXZ is doing their repack work right now!

And--sure looks like WNLO/WIVB on RF 36 is still doing tower work today, switching back and forth to a weaker signal! I guess they're still finishing up the job, which today's rainy weather probably doesn't help. I've got friends in Rochester who are looking forward to getting a decent signal from them, roughly equal to the way that the old RF 4 analog flamethrower used to stomp in there all the way from Colden in the analog era.

WIVB signal is up 3db over what I measured 2 1/2 months ago which matches WKBW's level,
WBXZ appears to be off the air RF (both 17 & 23),
WKBW signal is 1db lower from previous readings (probably conditions),
WGRZ signal is the same,
WUTV is down 1.5db (doubtful it's conditions, I'm too close) WNED & WNLO are about the same.

I’m 102 miles from WNLO transmitter. Signal is much better than before. Stronger than WGRZ which is 97 miles away.

It's really "pinnin' the meter" here now. Wow.

BTW, little tiny WDTB RF 29 was also screwed up most of the day (maybe related to the new equipment being installed for "BXZ right now), not that any of the five people who can get it ever bothers to watch it.

It's WDTV and I believe it's only four that actually watch it, the same number that watch WNYB on RF 5.

Looks like CFMT, CJMT, and CITY are testing their new channels right now. They're turning them on one-by-one it appears, so CIII-41 may follow shortly (or may not).

CIII 17 reading is a bogus number, current RF 41 -20dbmV
CITY 18 -6dbmV receivable, current RF44 on the cliff
CJMT 26 -12dbmV receivable, current RF40 no lock
CKVP 29 no signal measured (WDTV local is off the back side) current RF42 -5dbmV
CFMT 30 no signal measured (possible sue to overload from WNED 31), current RF47 no lock

WBXZ RF17 apparently is off the air. They may be in the middle of the move to RF23.

WNYO. They're supposed be doing it in this market later this year as part of Sinclair's master plans; they've still got to complete the tower and transmitter work, and then they're expected to make a big promotion about "NextGen TV."

Yeah, ain't we lucky in WNY? Two of the worst broadcast groups in the U.S., Sinclair and Nexstar, own a total of 4 stations in the market.

https://get.sucks/evoke/news/inauthe...or-award-2018/

IMHO, ATSC3-ready tuners won't start to be plentiful/affordable until 2 to 4 years from now. What remains to be seen is just how many of the features of 3.0 that stations really want. Believe me, not many people in TV broadcasting are too happy about it, what with the deepening recession taking place and the lack of viewer demand/awareness.

I have subscribed to 'TV Technology' since the early 80's on and off and nothing changed with that magazine. It's a publication that paints a rosy picture, 1st about all the 'new & improved/latest & greatest' broadcast products that appear to work miracles.
ATSC was long overdue and the decision not to make it backward comparable probably was the 'wise' thing to do based on how outdated NTSC (Never Twice the Same Color) was (1954). And that didn't include the original monochrome standard (1936). BUT, it's only been half that time (yes, I know there is a 5 year 'grace' period of sorts) with this ATSC3 being forced upon us (viewers & broadcasters).

I can only imaging the six or seven figure cost to upgraded their plants (studio & xmitter).
