I haven't been a D* customer since December '05, but I was for 4 years before that. Then I bought a Philips Plasma and TW made me a deal I couldn't refuse to convert to cable.
Since January of this year, D* calls occasionally to try and get me to come back. Until recently, I said "Call me back when you have HD locals." Last night they called again.
D*: "We see that you ended your service last December"
me: "That's correct, no HD locals"
D*: "Well today's your lucky day, we now have HD locals in your area"
me: "Really? all of them?"
D*: "Yes sir, let me check... yes, all seven of your local stations are available in HD. Can I sign you up?"
me: "You're sure all seven?"
D*: "Yes sir, that's what my computer says. Can I sign you up?"
me: "Well, what are you offering?"
D*: "I've got a deal you can't pass up. Do you like football? Good, I can give you Total Choice Premier for $69 for 4 months."
me: "uh huh... what about an HD-DVR?"
D*: "Gotcha covered on that, too... regular price $399, I can let you have it for $349.99, installed. You still have all of your other equipment?"
me: "I still have the STB's I had before"
D*: "You still have your antenna up?"
me: "Yeah, but it won't work with HD"
D*: "Yeah, that's right, tell you what, I'll throw in a new antenna, and wave the install fee, and you just pay the $19.95 delivery fee. Can I sign you up?"
me: "Well, i'm looking at an HD DVR from the cable company that I didn't have to pay for..."
D*: "Hold please... I can get you everything you want for no installation fee, no charge on the antenna, no delivery fee, and HD DVR, can I sign you up?"
me: "and how much is the DVR?"
D*: "For you, today, I can cut the price to $299"
me: "I can go to BestBuy and get a better deal than this"
D*: "Okay, I understand, how about a DVR for free?"
me: "you mean the HD DVR?"
D*: "No HD, but i can give you a free HD receiver. Can I sign you up"
me: "I think I'll pass..."
D*: "If i make the HD DVR $199, can I sign you up today?"
me: "Call me back when you have a better deal... good night."
The sad thing is I'm really starting to want to go back to satellite. Comcast has been doing a lot of quirky things with the signal down in my area.
