Well, it’s not unprecedented for them. They did the same thing with WKXB/Jammin’ 99.9 in Wilmington and WCMC/99.9 The Fan in Raleigh. They basically bought the Wilmington cluster to downgrade WKXB.

I have noticed lately that WWAY has been dropping signal completely for the last few days on their real channel 46 including this evening. Any chances they will rebroadcast those shows that were messed up? Instinct on their CBS was my main concern.

Any ideas whats happening to them? I am down on Ocean Isle.

I saw they were off last week during the day, and apparently they were having transmitter failure. They may be doing what they can to keep the old beast online until they can change channels.

I never realized that FOX 26 also had a failed transmitter and had to go back to an old one quite some time ago, and have been broadcasting at an even lower power than they are allotted. I seem to recall having an issue picking it up for a short time, but when it came back on it was still a good solid signal way up in Jacksonville.

Interesting.. Hopefully their new transmitters for the upcoming channel changes on 9/6 will make things better.

When they change frequencies for broadcast, they have to use new transmitters then, and not 'tune' the old transmitters for a different frequency?

I haven't noticed any degradation on WSFX signal here.

Part of the auction included new transmitters, cable and antennas I believe. We have had such terrible lightning over the past several summers, and my guess is that tower got struck, probably more than once.

I think the shared antenna on the Wilmington tower can be tuned for new frequencies. They have a combiner they change I think I read, along with junking the old transmitters. WECT seems to always be stronger for me, but WSFX is also very good. Should be interesting to see how the new frequencies come in. They should be even stronger, especially for me since I am using a Winegard HD8800 UHF which is possibly the strongest UHF antenna on low frequencies.

Things you do to keep on the air. The CE at WWAY posted this in a broadcast engineering group. Seems as time goes on, these transmitters get more and more complicated which means something very simple can take you off the air. In this case, a simple LED sensing light in the controller. With so little time left for that transmitter to be operational, the fix? LED Christmas tree lights! Don't laugh. You do things like this when you have too.

WSFX said last night on the 10 PM news that the rescan was on hold due to technical issues? What happened? When is the switch taking place now?

I rescanned this morning and found a ton of channels from the north into Pennsylvania that I have never seen before!

Apparently, there's an issue with the new combiner. It's going to be another few days.

The combiner that WECT, WWAY and WSFX will be using on repack is having some major issues. The factory has been on site for over two weeks. I have heard rumors the whole thing may need to be scapped and a new one installed.

Sounds rather complicated compared to if each station had it's own antenna system. I hope these stations continue to service Onslow Co as well as they have so far. These stations come in with ease compared to some stations to the north. I know they ignore this area in that regard, but I still watch a lot of the channels.

As many of you know we had a combiner issue with WECT, WSFX, and WWAY that prevented us from transitioning to our new channels. We are working with the manufacturer to resolve the issue, but do not have an ETA as to when we will go.

I don't get on here much these days but noticed several of you have mentioned that WSFX is on a different transmitter. That is correct. A few months ago we lost our main and installed the new WECT backup in it's place at 55% power. The encoding quality is much cleaner and better on the new generation equipment and we seem to have the same basic coverage with less power, likely due to the increased quality of the encoding.

We, along with WWAY are working through these issues and hope to be up on our new equipment as soon as possible. As always, I enjoy reading the reports and comments.

Hello everybody!

I'm down here in the Monkey Junction area, and I'm wondering if there's a way to get Antenna TV. I saw some things earlier in this thread that would have me believe we can't get it at all in Wilmington anymore, yet when I put the zip code into Antenna TV's website, it gives me a channel location of 29.2. I hooked one of those small/flat antennas up last night (a cheapie from Amazon) and was able to get 22 channels (although 4 of them are just color bars....49.1 through 49.4). So two questions really....1. would I be able to pull Antenna TV if a mounted a better quality antenna up in the attic?, and if not, then 2. what other kind of stations would I gain above the ones I currently have if I went ahead and installed a decent antenna in the attic anyways?

I appreciate any assistance/feedback you guys have!

WTMV is what you are looking for. They are broadcasting on channel 35 according to Rabbitears.info. It has Cozi, AntennaTv, Movies! and StartTV supposedly. Hopefully someone will verify. The tower is in the Kirkland and Ogden area.

You might try Ollies down there on College Rd. The store up here in Jacksonville had Antennas Direct Db4 antennas and had Antop antennas for a low price.

And they are indeed broadcasting H & I as 10.3.

on a related topic, channel 10 (real 15) is getting hammered during the evening due to the tropospheric effects causing WRAZ to blow WILM out of the water.

Come on cold fronts and push this stuff away!

I also visited Antennaweb.org, and they are now indicating that the WWAY, WSFX, and WECT will be changing to their new real channels 1/17/2020. WUNJ converted on schedule.

WILM has METV on 10.1 and 10.2 and Heroes and Icons on 10.3 witch used to be Stadium. WILT has METV on 24.1, 24.2 and H&I on 24.3 witch used to be Stadium. Start tv has moved into the spot on 29.3 witch used to be H&I. Why the multiple METV's on WILM and WILT? Hope when the repack comes we will have different stations instead of multiple METV's. I love METV and want it to stay but we don't need 4 channels of it.

As a poster above stated, there are several channels with only color bars. They have a pretty strong signal at my house. I live in Wilmington off Oleander Dr close to Wrightsville Beach. They are 49.1 thru 49.4 and the station is listed as WQDH-LD? Will those be OTA channels when the repack happens?

WILT-LD and WILM-LD are two LP stations owned by the same company transmitting from different areas, you just happen to be in an area that can get reliable reception of both. WILT-LD is closer to the coast and southwest of Wilmington, WILM-LD is more inland and northwest of Wilmington. The repack already happened for them and they remained in the same locations and kept the same transmitting power and height.

The repack already happened for WQDH-LD too since they recently came back to air on their new RF number, however they haven't filed for their license to cover yet. It's owned by HC2 holdings, so chances are it will be carrying either Azteca or a mix of whoever wants to broker/lease their subchannel capacity like religious or shopping channels or 3rd tier subchannels like Soul of the South. The same thing will likely happen with HC2's 3 other LP signals that transmit from different areas around Wilmington so they can reach the widest OTA audience possible.

Well I hope WQDH doesn't air shopping channels, Azteca or Soul of the South. Comet would be alright with me as I can get it sometimes out of New Bern but its not reliable. NB is a bit too far from me to get all the time. NB has another channel I like. It shows funny home blooper type clips and really cool sports related clips. IDK the name of the station.

So WILM and WILT will each keep 2 METV channels? I have seen Court TV ads for OTA. That would be an option.

They pre-empt a lot of MeTV programming on the main channel to carry local and syndicated programming they still have the rights to from their days as a CBS affiliate, so they use -2 to clear the full MeTV schedule. H&I is owned by the same parent company as MeTV, so they tend to get carriage together. Up until 2016 they had the Wilmington CBS affiliation via their sister channel WRAL, but when WRAL switched to NBC after the dispute, WILM went independent and used MeTV to fill in the remaining hours.

HC2 owns Azteca, so if there isn't an established affiliate in the market, they usually carry that on their LP channels. These are LP stations that can't declare must carry status for cable and satellite carriage, and if a cable company does choose to carry them they usually stick to the main channel, which really limits who is willing to affiliate with them. HC2 is one of those companies that usually brokers their subchannels out to whoever wants to lease them, so they are stuck with whoever wants to pay for the airtime like religious and shopping channels and 3rd tier nets.

I see. Good info thanks. WQDH if Im correct has 4 spots for channels. 49.1 thru 49.4 so if azteca and soul of the south are 2, they will still air 2 more that hopefully will be different for the folks that can receive the service. Here's hoping.

In case this is of any use to anyone else (because I'm learning things move a lot, and different sites list different locations for different channels), here's what I'm able to get in the Monkey Junction area as of today with just a cheap $9 flat antenna:

3.1 ABC
3.2 CBS
3.3 CW
6.1 NBC
6.2 Bounce
6.3 Escape
6.4 Laff
24.1 CW
24.2 MeTV
24.3 Heroes & Icons
26.1 FOX
26.2 this
26.3 GRIT
26.4 ion
39.1 PBS
39.2 PBS Kids
39.3 PBS
39.4 PBS
49.1 WQDH-LD
49.2 WQDH-LD
49.3 WQHD-LD
49.4 WQHD-LD

So....I guess I still have my original questions....1. can anyone confirm they can still get Antenna TV in this area (and if so, what channel?), and 2. what else might I get here if I jumped from a cheap antenna on the downstairs wall to a higher end antenna in the attic?

Your DMA's Antenna TV affiliates are on WTMV-LD 21.2, a low power signal based in Ogden, NC and WTMQ-LD 44.1, a low power signal based in Jacksonville, NC.

Monkey Junction is in range of WTMV's signal, but you might need to adjust your antenna to get it since it comes from a tower north of you, while most of the major Wilmington stations originate from towers to the west of you:

Thanks. The antenna was already pointed north, so I tried moving it up the wall/in the window for a few additional scans....no dice. I don't have a TV upstairs currently to try and scan there, so it looks like the only way for me to find out whether I MIGHT get the one channel I want is to go and spend some more $. To be continued!

WTMQ is off the air, and has been for a good week or so. I have no idea why... The main station out of Kinston, WTMH is on the air, but it is on the same channel as WUNJ 39.x's and so it is a battle for me to get either one at times.
