Get ready to rescan your TV on Sept. 6 to keep watching WSLS 10

Unfortunately, the FCC is requiring that TV stations must move frequencies at different times, meaning that one rescan won't be enough.

That is... technically true, in the most misleading way. WSET is in a later phase, but there's no reason every station in Phase 5, as WSLS is, couldn't move at the same time.

The coordinate and schedule an overnight test. WSLS turns off around 2AM, WDBJ turns on for an hour, then turns it off and WSLS turns back on.

Hey Trip,

Any new insight on how the tv channel repack for Roanoke/Lynchburg is progressing?

Channel 10 is running a crawl that says the date is September 6, at 12:30 PM, but from what I read there is still a lot of work to be done. As usual I imagine everything will happen at the last minute. If it happens.

Are the phases still on schedule?
Are the local stations on schedule? (Looks like WDBJ might have an issue)
Any new technical info (human readable) on how they are going to handle it (Ch 21/20 antenna)
What happens if a station can not make the deadline?

Thanks

WDBJ: Claiming some type of reimbursement problem. However, lack of reimbursement is not a reason for a station to miss its repack deadline. Otherwise, nothing of note in its filings. Should be replacing the analog 7 antenna with the new 30 antenna.

WSLS: Done. Ready to begin testing. The analog 10 antenna was replaced with the new digital 34 antenna.

WWCW/WFXR: Nothing of note in filings. Looks like WWCW will keep its current antenna. WFXR replacing its top-mount analog 27 antenna with the new 36 antenna. I'm told things are on track for the most part.

WPXR: Will transition to a temporary antenna. Moving to a different tower on Poor Mountain.

WZBJ-CD: Nothing of note in its filings.

Yes, they're on schedule as of right now.

If a station can't move to its new channel by the deadline, it can try to get a delay if it doesn't hold up other stations or gets interference agreements with other stations. Otherwise, it goes off the air.

Two things.

1) WDBJ has filed an STA for a temporary antenna to use immediately after their transition. It's for 100 kW (rather than the 1000 kW on their permit) from a lower height with a directional antenna that is nulled toward Danville and the south. (The pattern is clearly designed to maximize power toward the NRV and Lynchburg.) I anticipate this signal will cause problems for people, and WDBJ under its relatively new corporate ownership isn't really making that clear from what I can find online. Don't be terribly shocked if WDBJ is hard to receive after September 6 until it gets the new full-power omni installed.

2) Can anyone confirm whether or not W05AA-D in Roanoke is on the air? I've gotten a report that it may be off the air.

Phase 4 went relatively well, I would say. A handful of stations slid to later phases but nothing catastrophic, and a fair number are on reduced power facilities (as WDBJ and WPXR will be). We'll see how Phase 5 goes.

Question: And why is that?

Answer: With the extremely optimistic schedule, suppliers and support crews were unable provide equipment and services the stations needed to stay on schedule. The stations had no choice but to look for temporary workarounds to stay on the air. I don't imagine they are happy about the situation.

So in reality the repack is behind schedule.

That's one interpretation. Some stations did everything right and got in trouble anyway. Alternatively, some stations dragged their feet or were otherwise very late in getting started or waited for various reasons to the last minute. Note that WSLS was mostly finished months ago, so it clearly could be done.

Still other stations planned all along to transition to reduced power facilities. UNC-TV in North Carolina is doing that for most of its stations; they replaced the aux antennas and will transition to those to make the date, then come back and replace the top-mounted antennas later.

It actually looks like WPXR is planning to go live on its final facility, according to the ION rescan webpage. That means that unless something goes wrong for WFXR and/or WWCW, only WDBJ will be at reduced power after the transition. (How the times have changed.)

In fact, WDBJ filed a reduced power notification and is already at half-power on channel 18 while they do work on Poor Mountain.

What does WWCW have to do to re-tune their antenna. Doesn't that require some down time?

Any status on WZBJ-CD?

I wish the stations would announce when they are on low power. I always get worried thinking something in failing in my setup. But now-a-days transmitter issues affect less that 15% of the viewers. (And not the ones they really care about.)

I don't think they have to retune the antenna. When WWCW replaced the antenna right before the transition, it was a dual-channel 20/21 antenna so they could run digital 20 and analog 21 at the same time, and I remember that the 21 analog signal was the best I had ever seen it for the month or so that it ran. So it should already be tuned for 21, I would think.

No word on WZBJ-CD.

Due to Hurricane Dorian, the FCC delayed the phase completion date for Phase 5 to the 11th. As such, WSLS and WDBJ (and presumably WZBJ-CD) are delaying until the 11th. What I hear is that WFXR, WWCW, and WPXR will still transition tomorrow.

Based on what I see WSLS made the decision to transition next week. Since WSLS is on CH 30 and WDBJ is transitioning to CH 30, they had no choice but to wait.

WSLS website was updated at 5:04 PM yesterday.
At 7:00 PM yesterday WDBJ had the Friday @12:30 crawl
At 7:30 PM WSLS did NOT have a crawl
WDBJ website updated today

It may take a rescan to fix this one...
