Great, thanks all. How are the signals now compared to before? WWCW should be about the same, but hopefully WPXR and WFXR are better.

It appears to me that both WFXR and WPXR have improved in both signal strength and signal quality. The surprise is WWCW. In the past WWCW SNR was 28-29 dB. Now it is around 32dB. More in line with the other locals, WSET and WZBJ-CD.

Has NBC 29 in C'ville transitioned to Ch 2 yet?

No, their new equipment has yet to be delivered so they've slid into Phase 6 along with WCAV.

WDBJ has not. WSLS has abandoned 30. I have a very small signal on 34, which doesn't decode.

We are currently operating at 100kW using an auxiliary antenna on our new frequency. Once the new tower is complete, we will increase our power to 1,000kW (1 megawatt).

A very small number of our viewers who live in the Lynchburg area receive WZBJ24 off of a low-power transmitter on Candler’s Mountain. That transmitter will be off the air for roughly 48 hours starting at 11:00PM Wednesday.

Confirmed - WZBJ-CD is off the air.

SNR for WDBJ is down from 22 dB to 20 dB as measured by the SONY TV. AGC value is the same 37%

After moving my antenna, I am able to receive WSLS again. Their signal is worse than before the transition. The other stations from Poor Mountain are strong. WFXR is definitely better.

Trip,

As of this morning WZBJ-CD is still off the air. Anything in the FCC log on how long they expect to be off the air?

They filed a CP extension saying they were hoping to have it on by the end of the month, but asked for more time than that just in case.

I'm in the Lynchburg area, south of the airport about 3 miles and since the switch 27 strength is bad here. Use to get it around full strength 95 - 100%. Now it's down in the mid 60's if it comes in at all (60% is the cliff on that TV). The opposite is true of 38. Barely came in before, now near 100%.

Can someone explain why 27 moved to the frequency that 38 was on (36) and 38 moved to frequency 27. Why didn't 38 stay where it was and 27 move to 27 and if the purpose was to free up frequencies, why did 10 leave 30 only to be occupied moments later by channel 7. What am I missing?

What frequency is the old 43 tower moving to?

It's because other stations besides those in Roanoke moved. For example, WDBJ is the only station on Poor Mountain that is not directional, while WSLS is. WSLS could fit on 34 while WDBJ could not, and 18 was needed for other stations in North Carolina. So WSLS was bumped up to 34 and WDBJ moved to 30.

WZBJ-CD is moving to 19.

I'm having trouble receiving WDBJ and WFXR in Lynchburg. How long until DBJ gets to full power? Is FXR at full power?

WFXR is at full power, so far as I know.

WDBJ, not sure. Apparently, they are waiting for permitting to build a new tower.

Thanks for the replies.

Here's what I'm receiving right now on my LG 50PM9700-UA...

WBRA Signal Strength 29% Signal Quality 1%
WSET SS 71% SQ 100%
WWCW SS 82% SQ 100%
WPXR SS 67% SQ 100%
WDBJ SS 28% SQ 5%
WSLS SS 62% SQ 100%

Similar results on my Tivo Roamio, Magnavox HDD Recorder and Zenith converter box.

Sounds like multi-path. What kind of antenna set up?

I'd wait until the leaves fall off the trees and see if that makes a difference. Hopefully the problem won't return next year. That was my experience with WSLS a few years ago.

WBRA - Blue Ridge PBS details

People often have issues receiving Blue Ridge PBS. The main reason for this is that we broadcast on VHF channel 3 and most HDTV antennas sold in the area stores do not receive low band VHF. The attached article explains a bit about how HDTV channel reception works and describes how to properly receive Blue Ridge PBS. Here is the just of the article and the attachment has the details.

You don’t have to pay for tv viewing
With a little effort, most people can successfully set up their televisions for over the air reception, assuming that your signal is not blocked by a mountain or buildings. Even if you have a satellite service, you can benefit from the addition of over the air reception for additional channels and better quality. And another benefit, you won’t lose your network programs when the satellite or cable companies get in a fight with the network over fees.

You need to know that many antennas sold in stores are only for UHF band stations and do not pick up Blue Ridge PBS or other VHF stations. You must have a VHF/UHF antenna (and not high band VHF/UHF) to receive all the channels. Indoor antennas almost always have rabbit ears (two rods that pull out) to receive VHF. Outdoor antennas will have some larger antenna elements that pick up the VHF band. Indoor antennas are fine when they work but outdoor antennas work better because they are not affected by the home and things in it.

After you connect the antenna including power if it has an amplifier, you will need to rescan your TV by using your remote and going to setup in the menu. If you don’t find our station, re-adjust the antenna and rescan again. It may also be helpful to move the antenna to another location. Even a few feet can make a big difference. By the way, our transmitter is located on Poor Mountain, about 10 miles South of Salem. For much more information, please go to our website at blueridgepbs.org and scroll to the bottom of the page where you can click on “Click here for the Blue Ridge PBS HDTV Viewing Guide”.

Hi Pete,

WZBJ-CD is back online now. You may have to rescan your TV to add the channels back in.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7)-- Some over-the-air viewers have been having service interruptions while waiting patiently for our new tower project to be completed. While there is still more work to do, WDBJ7 wants to let you see where we are in the process!

The new tower on Poor Mountain is up along with the antenna, and the old one is on the ground! The great news here is that we’re in the home stretch and look forward to being back to full power in the next few weeks.

Much of the work is dependent on good weather, though, and the safety of our tower crew working at the site. This means there may be outages at times as the work is completed because crews cannot work near a live antenna for their safety. We are working as quickly as possible and thank you for your continued patience.
