I recall saying that Thaxton Mtn. was between you and Poor Mountain, but it was not the peak, just a side. Therefore, you were probably safe where you were.

Has anyone else looked at WJPR-DT?

HOLY COW!!!

Just got this email from WDBJ. They are planning to broadcast thirteen (13) complete NCAA MBB games. And that's just tomorrow!!

///////////////

Let me begin this message by saying how much I appreciate your patience with us as we experiment with HDTV and multicasting. You are an understanding group when we mess us. And we may mess up a whole lot during the tournament season. Cox Cable is enthusiastically working with us on the HD part and the multicasting part. We're just trying not to trip them up along the way. It sure is nice to be able to let YOU choose which game to watch.
Here's what we're attempting for the first day, this Thursday.

NCAA 18 March 04

7.0 Analog (Cox Cable channel 7)
12:10 Pre-game
12:40 Maryland vs UTEP
2:45 St Josephs vs Liberty

7:00 Pre-game
7:10 Duke vs Alabama State
9:40 N Carolina vs Air Force

7.1 HDTV (Cox Cable channel 707)
No HD production available today

7.2 SDTV (Cox Cable channel 708)
12:10 Pre-game
12:20 Florida vs Manhattan
2:40 Wake Forest vs VCU

7:00 Pre-game
7:10 Connecticut vs Vermont
9:30 DePaul vs Dayton

7.3 SDTV (Cox Cable channel 709)
12:10 Pre-game
12:25 Texas Tech vs Charlotte
3:00 Syracuse vs BYU
4:55 Stanford vs Texas-San Antonio

7:00 Pre-game
7:35 Michigan State vs Nevada
9:55 Gonzaga vs Valparaiso

You will need a need a comb. VHF/UHF antenna. I have problems from 15 miles away with my UHF-only 4228 - I have to turn it around 180 deg.

Here is a screen shot of an LOS from Trents Ferry and Boonsboro Rd. Peakland (Thaxton Mtn. is several thousand ft. SW of the LOS).

Riga, thanks for the LOS pic. I also live in the Boonsboro/Peakland area but below street level (Ok, I am in a hole) I am considering the Square Shooter from Winegard, with amplificiation, because it can adjust it upward instead of my current setup which is 90 degrees with rotator. Do you believe that this would be a better option for someone in my location? I currently get FOX, PAX, WB and ABC without problems. If the stars line up right I can get WDBJ, all with a 3' UHF only, amplified antenna. I have a larger (80"+) UHF only that has yet to be tried; lots of install issues there.

Your thoughts please.

The Samsung 151 is on the way! I couldn't pass up the deal I found on eBay; less than $150 delivered!

I am in a very similar situation as dogsout (I also live in a hole) and am very interested in riga's response to the antenna question. I need CBS for football season!

Now only if Adelphia would get its act together in Lynchburg, so I can watch the Soprano's in HD; I'll be a very happy man

Mal, I use the Samsung 151 and have had great luck with it. Not as fancy as some others available but the price is right! We need to collaborate on this antenna thing as I have tried several; still looking for the right one. Thanks for the post.

dogsout,

I can't offer any advice on upward adjustment, or really on any antenna other than the 4228. I can get WSET-DT fairly well, and its on low power and the LOS is not real good.

Trip,

I have been noticing a gray shading of 17-1 and, to a lesser extent, 17-3. I emailed Robert but haven't heard back. Signal is strong though. Maybe its just tropho. I noticed a while back that WSET-DT was stronger and more stable, so I emailed and asked if they were doing anything different - Nope. Now signal is back to marginal.

Anybody notice 7-4 showing up (blank)?

Just got the email update from WDBJ for Fri. - 12 more complete games incl. 4 in HD.

We lit up 7.4 in the encoder yesterday. There may be times during the tournament when we have to put three SD games on 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4 and switch off 7.1 -- but we're trying not to do that.
If your STB has detected 7.4, just leave it there until after the dance and then re-learn the channels.

Just ordered the following from SolidSignal.com :

Winegard SquareShooter High-Band VHF/UHF Digital/Analog/HDTV Antenna System (SS-1000)

Winegard SquareShooter HDP-269 Pre-Amp (HDP-269)

Dogsout, I'll let you know how it works in a week or so. I hope it is enough to pull WDBJ and WSLS and plus it will keep the wife happy with its small size and attractive look!

I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks

I wish I could tell you. I'm in Blacksburg eargerly waiting for the 1st shipment of the High-Def Tivo boxes from DirecTV. They are due within the next 2 weeks and I'm just hoping it will arrive in time to see the Masters this year in HDTV. I'm sure the picture quality of the OTA stations from Roanoke in digital (even in standard definition) will be much better than what I currently get through DirecTV.

Yes, WDBJ digital looks far better than both cable and DirecTV SD WDBJ. That is one of the reasons I got rid of my old HD box (Samsung TS150) because it would not stretch the WDBJ SD signal to fill the screen (couldn't remove the grey bards broadcast with the 1080i signal for SD material).

With my DirecTV box I can stretch the grey bars of the side - and now watch WDBJ digital on shows I care about seeing better picture detail.

I had two interesting questions by phone today. You probably know this, but just in case....
1. The HD production truck is in one place, and the Duke, Wake Forest, and North Carolina games are being played in another location. That's why they're not in HD.
2. Yes, we know the SD games on 7.2 today look a little muddy. We heard you and we're giving the HD feed as many bits as possible, regardless of which teams are playing in HD.
Thanks for all of your encouragement since yesterday's schedule.

That you very much WDBJ and COX for showing the out of market games and especially the out of market HD games. The picture quality Friday night was very good as far as I am concerned. It brought back memories of when I was a kid and we had a sat. that picked up CBS feeds from all over the country. I think I was usually sick and could not go to school the first two days of the tournament.

I noticed some neat promo commercials last night highlighting Cox picking up the additional feeds for the NCAA tournament. Hopefully with everything in place they would let WDBJ keep their subchannels on their system (for the service WDBJ is providing their customers that would be the least they could do).

First, I think it's great what you are doing.

But, it's a shame so few people know about it. I'm buddies with a local radio talk show host (Rich Roth of The Sportsline on 105.9 WLNI) who is big into High Definition TV and he actually called your station to complain about how you guys stayed with the Liberty game all the way through. I called him and told him about the multi-casting and the next day he did his show live from his basement so he could watch all the games.
I would not have known what you were doing if it weren't for your much appreciated e-mails.

Keep up the good work!!

I sent the multicast schedules to the Roanoke Times and the Lynchburg News & Advance. The Roanoke paper ran info on all of the multicasts for the first day, then reverted to printing only the Ch 7 stuff thereafter. I don't think the N&A ever ran anything.
We should be able to post the Thursday/Friday multicast schedule today or tomorrow.

Well, remember that the N&A is owned by channel 10. I doubt they'd want to put a story about how a competing station is doing things that channel 10 is too cheap to do. Hell, they won't even list WBVA even though I requested it.

....and then there was HD.

I received the Square Shooter and premamp Monday night. Set up a temporary position and hooked it all up. Watched CSI Miami on WDBJ (Thanks Bob!)

Today, I installed the antenna on the highest point on my house. Eyeballed the direct and angle. Here is what I am receiving in Boonesboro/Peakland area:

07-1 18 WDBJ-DT CBS; [2] News; [3] Weather
13-1 34 WSET-DT ABC; [2] ABC
21-1 20 WJPR-DT FOX; [3] WB
38-1 36 WPXR-DT PAX

I have only begun to tinker; will update if anything changes.

Any and all suggestions are apreciated ( I see a BIG antenna in my future )

Thanks for all the help

Do you have a Low-VHF antenna? You'll need one for WBRA-DT on channel 3. They have a 24-hour HD feed.

The only other channel you need to be concerned about is WSLS-DT on channel 30. They're quite a bit weaker than WDBJ-DT, but even still have a decent signal.

Gotta agree with Trip...the SquareShooter has no chance of getting PBS but if you can pull in WSLS-DT you'll be good to go.

By the way....what's up with the WDBJ multi-cast. Getting the same game on 7 Analog, 7-1, and 7-2. Nothing on 7-3 and 7-4...not even weather.

Oh...and while I'm at it....why can't I subscribe to this thread? It says I'm subscribed in my User Control Panel but I never get an e-mail when a new post is placed...anybody else have this problem with this thread?

Does anyone know whether WBRA-DT will be going up to channel 15 with its digital signal after the conversion away from analog is over? Technically, I understand that 15 would be better than 3 because of interference . . . but that 3 would be less expensive to operate because of power requirements.

Stations soon will have to make some sort of declaration as to whether they want to keep digital operations on the new channel allocation or go back to the old analog channel and build a new digital plant. For many, that's going to be a difficult choice. The fact is, there is still a lot to be learned about signal prop and issues of that sort. I think it will be a difficult call for a station like WBRA which had a really good UHF channel and will have to quickly learn about life on Channel 3.
By the way, Bridgewater is just about the right spot for the signals of analog Channel 3 from Harrisonburg and digital Channel 3 from Roanoke to bump into each other. Have you seen any evidence of that?

WSET-DT will be available to current and new Cox High Definition customers beginning March 30.

http://www.cox.com/Roanoke/

Great news for me, because I watch CBS 50% of the time and ABC about 30%.
