A big opening to northern Mexico this afternoon but much interference with more than one station per channel and severe fading. I managed to get this image of Azteca 13 which turned out to be XHWX in Monterrey, Mexico on RF 4. These Mexican stations don't appear to identify with call signs like we're used to. Azteca 13 is a Mexican network affiliated with Azteca.

Keep on eye on this map of 50 MHz ham contacts. You'd like to see a lot of red lines between California and other states.

I sure miss watching for E-skip. When I was a kid in New Hampshire and later when i lived in Chicago I had a great time logging DX stations on AM, FM, TV and the ham bands. Since I moved out here to the west coast that hobby has produced no TV stations by e-skip and just a couple via tropo, although I did work a station in New Hampshire on 6 meters with a 10 watt rig and a 2 meter magmount antenna on top of the file cabinet. Apparently the right conditions don't exist out here for much VHF/UHF DXing fun.

How many stations outside of California have you logged, Chuck? Congratulations on today's reception from Monterrey, Mexico!

Only the two I've mentioned but I'm planning to leave the low VHF antenna up for the season so maybe I'll get some more.

It finally happened. I received my first digital station via spondaic-E tonight on RF 2. It was in HD. It was only in for a minute so it took some work to track it down. I did not recognize the program they were showing or the on-screen logo. I found that the logo was for the CBC so it was a Canadian station. Rabbitears has a list of Canadian stations and there are only two on RF 2 in all of Canada and one is in Ontario so that couldn't be it. The other was CKSA in Lloydminister, Alberta running 8.1 KW with an omni antenna. The distance was 1100 miles, just right for sporadic-E.

There should be more chances this season since we have these openings to western Canada quite often.

Congratulations on your first digital station, Chuck, and an additional hip-hip-hurray for being from Alberta,Canada! So glad to know that e-skip is possible in this area.

Will this possible be CBUT from Vancouver (RF 43, Vitural Channel 2) than CKSA? It's much closer to San Francisco (~800 miles) and it's power is much stronger(around 100kW according to wikipedia) than CKSA confused.gif

No, e-skip impacts low-VHF only. (Very rarely high-VHF.) It could happen on FM, however, and frequently does.

And this is why I have always used a 2 to 1 rca combining cable for these setups..... Then it doesn't matter which channel the audio is on...

Thanks for letting me know that things have been fixed.  God TV suddenly left Galaxy 19, so I had to find an alternate way to get them.  I also added an audio amplifier to boost the .1 audio.  The new 8 channel mux from Anywave should be arriving soon, which will let me add in more subchannels.  I have to balance things with the TV station with my day job and family life.

KFTY is my first experience with a distant low VHF DTV station. Maybe it's just the location but it is remarkably stable here only varying between 19 and 21 dB SNR most of the time. The range of KEMO is much larger than that. I've only seen one drop out due to temperature inversions. I have seen some brief interruptions due to sporadic-E propagation. Not much anyone can do about that.

I saw the BLBN station managers talking about a new health channel. Will that be one of the stations with the new 8 channel mux?

Hi Chuck,

Yes, Better Life is really helping me out with the station.  They bought the transmitters for KFTY-LD and K03HY-D.  Yes, their new health channel will be going on the .2 subchannel.  I'll be moving God TV to the .5 subchannel.  Also, I'll be adding a new local Santa Rosa group to subchannel 6.  I've also been planning to put the Walk on .7 and Spanish Christian programming on the .8 subchannel.  I work a full time job at Agilent Technologies (which is getting the new name of Keysight Technologies) and building the network of TV stations in my spare time.  My strategy to start with is to mostly rent out sub-channels.

Blessings,

Keith

It was just a loose connection. :-)  I would much rather program the mux to just output mono instead of stereo in order to save on bandwidth, but the Comark Mux doesn't have a setting for mono.  Maybe the Anywave mux will have this capability.

Keith

Thanks for looking into this issue.
Nothing has changed with 3-1, and the left audio is still not working correctly..... Not saying it's a stereo programming issue,.... Something is hooked-up "reversed" polarity or flipped wrong with 3-1
Or your equipment..... is not set up to be backwards compatible with older tube tvs.
My newer tvs have no problems with the audio working on the right speaker only.

3-1 ... is not set up right for older tv sets using only one speaker..........no sound
3-2,...3-3,.... & 3-4 ....work just fine.

Next time I'm at my parents residence I will check to see if this is just a "Bay Area" problem.
I think I've seen duplicate programming on 28-1 in the Sacramento area.

Hi,

While KTNC VC 42 RF 14 from "The Devil Mountain" still is showing color bars for "Retro" ("RTV") VC 42.5, Schedules Direct, Zap2It, some cable and other listings Tribune Media Services drives have updated their listings for KTNC.

PROGRAM 2: 42.2 KTNC-SA

PROGRAM 3: 42.3 Works

PROGRAM 4: 42.4 ThisTV

PROGRAM 5: 42.5 RTV

TitanTV still has not updated their listings and "ThisTV" and "Retro" ("RTV") web pages still have the incorrect stream number. (5/29/2014).

I still cannot find a web page for "MGM The Works" but I found this information:

"The Works" may have changed their programming, I just checked and some thing other than HORROR movies was being shown.

KFTY 45.1 has very loud and distorted audio. The other sub channels are fine.

I wonder sometimes if the people managing some of these stations have any idea of what they're doing. So many seem to be very incompetent.

Larry

Larry,

was the entry for KCNS VC 38.6 RF 39.6 "The Works" added before or after you made this comment about KTNC?

It just adds to the label of very "incompetent", or MGM being very powerful. TWO (2) transmitters with "The Works".

Now that TMS has called KTNC and the listings for KTNC's five (5) streams have been added including "Retro" ("RTV") which Trip says are not paying KTNC anything and the color bars continue, I just do not get it.

No payment from "RetroTV", no broadcasting of "RetroTV" by KTNC but still the listings were added.

Thanks!  Better Life switched out their studio equipment yesterday evening, which caused their audio levels that they were sending me via their Stream Box to be much louder than they were.  So,  I turned down the audio

At last, I finally did a drive test of K03HY-D today on my way from Santa Rosa to the San Francisco airport.  I bought a 6 meter amateur radio mag mount antenna and cut it for the 5 meter band (60 MHz).  I could pick up K03HY-D really well from San Rafael down to the San Francisco airport.  I was able to listen to Joyce Meyer on God TV (3.2) most of the way, even while moving.  Tomorrow I'll drive down through Oakland on my way to San Jose and will also take my magnet mount antenna.

Blessings,

Before... the entry for KCNS 38.6 was first, because "The Works" showed up there before it appeared on 42.3.

"The Works" on 42.3 is probably there to serve the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto area. Remember, KTNC has a really good signal over there as well as the Bay Area.

I checked KFTY around 10 pm last night and it was pixelating a lot and looked to be on the digital cliff. My Sony was giving me "Can't decode signal" and "Audio only" messages. I thought I was finally seeing a fade in the signal. Then I checked it on the spectrum analyzer and the signal looked normal. I brought up the Sony Diagnostic screen and the SNR was better than 21 dB with 0 errors. Apparently one of the links getting to Mt. St. Helena was suffering from temperature inversion issues. This was the first time I had seen this situation. This morning it is back to normal but conditions on high VHF and UHF are poor. KEMO is completely out, something I rarely see. KFTY is still hanging in there at SNR 20 dB so it appears that ducting issues affect low VHF channels the least.

i have one of those "X" shaped winegard fm radio antennas up in my attic that i run down to my AVR for FM reception. Just for fun a couple weeks ago i plugged its coax into the tv and was pleasantly suprised at the results. It picked up alot of stations from SF, and even channel 68 up in marin. some stayed around all day, some not. but channel 3 never scanned in.

Another station with this type of problem is KGO's translator on Mt. Allison. Sometimes it loses the KGO 7 signal and it appears to the viewer that the signal from the translator is going out, when it's actally a loss of signal into the translator receiver. Also, I've been told that occasionally the translator will pick up KRCR 7 from Redding instead of KGO 7.

KFTY is better than 23 dB SNR but there is no picture. I don't know what is going on.
