I won't keep reporting on this, just wanted to say that it appears with the work going on it's possible that there might be short-duration periods of RF loss as antennas are changed or worked upon. Monday morning (when I saw the multiple signal losses) might have been be a scheduled time for that...I doubt it was atmospherics as all my non-Sutro signals were normal.

Email received this afternoon from Raul Velez, Sutro Tower

Larry

Sutro Tower Auxiliary Antenna Operation Notification

Happy New Year!

You are receiving this email because you have asked to be placed on our auxiliary antenna operation mailing list.

Sutro Tower, Inc. is continuing the FCC mandated television repack work and stations operating from Sutro Tower will continue to switch between their main and auxiliary antennas for the next several months. There may be some service interruptions for off air viewers and listeners during these times depending on where you live. The levels of RF emissions, particularly in the area around Summit Reservoir just to the east of Sutro Tower, are higher when auxiliary antennas are in use, but still significantly below City, State, and Federal emission guidelines for exposure. Part of this project is to move some auxiliary antennas higher on Sutro Tower to reduce ground level emissions even further.

If you would like more information about the tower or to see past neighborhood measurements, go to www.sutrotower.com and click on the “for our neighbors” tab.

For those asking about KOFY 20, KCNZ 28, KMTP 32 and KQRM, now on 18, I have totally lost the stations here in San Francisco as of 5 or 6 days ago, and I'm only five miles from Mt. San Bruno. All of these stations are coming from the same transmitter on channel 28, because they're all sharing, but something has changed drastically with their signal to be so weak just five miles away. Channel 40, also from Mt. San Bruno, has also been very weak, but at least I can receive it. I know it's not my antenna. I'm using my huge HD8200U antenna and KNTV and KKPX are both normal strength, and I'm still receiving low power virtual 45, RF 2, from 55 miles away south of San Jose and several Sacramento/Stockton stations from the Walnut Grove transmitter site. All I can conclude is that the channel 28 transmitter or antenna are not working very well.

Thanks Larry. This information is most helpful as linked from you. I was blaming our in attic antenna on my recent problem with channel 7, KGO. We live in the North Bay and are in LOS from the top third of Sutro

For many years, I used to work right below Sutro Tower and would run up there on Twin Peaks during my lunch breaks. It’s certainly a SF landmark which I have always been fascinated with since living in The Bay Area.

I really appreciate all your great info and links to Sutro Tower

I noticed that the crew at Sutro Tower was working this afternoon, so I drove up to the top of Twin Peaks and took some photos. Here are three of them showing the crew going up the side of the south stack in a basket. I zoomed in for the close up, so it's slightly out of focus, but you can see the guys in the basket. You'll note that the KRON 7 antenna has already been installed. The KGO 12 antenna will be going above it.

Do we know when they will begin testing the new antennas?

There's been no announcement yet on the testing. They will probably do the testing during the wee hours of the morning so as not to interfere with most viewers.

They have announced that the phase 8 stations, KCNS, KPJK and KTVU, will change channels during the last week of April and those in phase 9, KGO, KRON and KBCW, will change on May 1st.

FYI... conditions seem to be getting back to more typical levels. OTA reception today was the best I've seen in a long time! The Walnut Grove VHF stations, KVIE 9, virtual 6, and KXTV 10 were coming in solid all day. They've been pretty much in and out for the past couple of months. KMAX 21, virtual 31, and KOVR 25, virtual 13, were stronger than normal, but KQCA 46, virtual 58, was in and out, right at the cliff edge. Sometimes it's really strong, but not today.

I also received some repeat stations that I haven't seen for months:
KCBA 13, virtual 35, from Salinas Fremont Peak (but there was no sign of KSBW on RF 8)
KNVN 24, virtual 24, from Chico, transmitting from 175 miles away in the hills east of Red Bluff, had a nice 20 dB SNR signal this afternoon
KTFK 26, virtual 64, from Walnut Grove (usually below the cliff edge) was coming in fairly well all day with occasional break up.
KCRA 35, virtual 3, also from Walnut Grove broke through a few times. (I normally can't receive it due to the signal on channel 35 from KGO)

I also received two new low power stations for the first time:
KFTY 2, virtual 45, transmitting from Mt. St. Helena north of Napa
KFMY 6, virtual 6, from Petaluma transmitting from Sonoma Mt.

KNVN has been coming in again today and I've picked up two new 8vsb signals on channel 18 and channel 22 that I haven't seen before. Both are too weak to detect the PSIP info, though. Anyone have any idea what these stations would be? KCBA is also coming in, but it's before the cliff edge today.

I'm keeping an eye out for channel changes, as phase 8 stations are now allowed to change to their new channels.

Thanks for all the reports, Larry. Please let us know as you detect channel changes...I'd rather do rescans when a channel change has been reported than randomly doing so on my own...

The top candidates would be KUVS on 18 and KLFB-LD on 22.

We don't know the status of the various stations during this rebuilding process that's going on until the 1st of May. If you used to get KTVU well and now you aren't, I suspect that they're operating on their auxiliary antenna.

We'll have to all wait until the various stations, about 20 of them in this area, change to their new repack channels. Phase 8 stations can change anytime now; phase 9 stations after March 14. All stations should be on their new channels by May 1. See https:/larrykenney.com/sfonair3.html for repack details and the new channel assignments.

I was surprised this afternoon when the signal on RF 18 kept getting stronger and stronger, then the PSIP information showed up along with three sub-channels on channel 9. I've logged a new station! It's a 7 kw translator, K18ND-D, for Chico/Paradise transmitting KIXE, Redding. At one point it reached a signal of 24 dB SNR According to RabbitEars.info, the transmitter is 157 miles from here.

KNVN has been varying from no signal to a high of 22 dB SNR this afternoon.

I still don't know about channel 22.

Now that phase 8 repack stations can move, we could start seeing channel changes anytime. Phase 9 stations can move as of March 14. I'll report changes here as I see them.

Larry;
Are you (or anyone else here) tracking any changes down towards San Luis Obispo?
I occasionally get RF 15, KSBY virtual 6, when Cozxi is off the air here.
I might see something new.

I think several stations transmitting from Sutro have been on their auxiliary antennas for the past two or three weeks. For me, being so close to the tower, stations's signals usually get stronger and show better quality when using their auxiliary antennas than they do when on their regular antenna. Lately KTVU 2, KGO 7, KBCW 44, KPJK 60 and KFSF 66 have all been showing 100% strength and 100% quality on my HD Home Run receivers and 32-33 dB SNR on my Sony TV.

KTNC is still on the air, sharing with KCNS on RF 39, but they have changed their programming. They now have SBN on 42.1 and U_Church on 42.2.

Also of note in the reception discussion, KCNZ 28, along with sharing partners, KQRM 18, KOFY 20 and KMTP 32, have not been receivable here on any antenna since January 4th. Their signal is there but has been below the cliff edge for the past month and Mt. San Bruno is only 5 miles away and line of sight from here. Ben, 888CALLFCC, is receiving it okay in Hayward, though, so they must be using a very directional auxiliary antenna.

Good thinking, Ben, and very possible, since it's another Chico station. I'll keep an eye on it.

As of last night, though, all of the distant signals have disappeared completely and no unusual signals have been seen in my HDHR scans, so conditions are back to "normal".

I occasionally get RF 15, KSBY virtual 6, when Cozxi is off the air here.
I might see something new.

KLFB 22 in Monterey Salinas is OFF the air. Has been for a while now.

I, and several others here in San Francisco, received KSBY RF 15, virtual 6, last August, but I haven't seen anything from down that way since then. One friend of mine, using just an indoor Leaf 30 antenna, was even able to receive it then.

I haven't seen anything where KLFB has been assigned a re-pack channel - it still has a ? in my lists - so maybe it's gone for good. There are several low power stations that sill don't have a new channel assigned, to the best of my knowledge, and will have to move off of their present channel: K04QR Esparto, K04RS San Juan Bautista, K07ZK Monterey, KPJC 11 San Francisco (has never been seen on the air), KLFB 22 Salinas, KYMB 27 Monterey, KFKK 32 Stockton, KSTV 32 Sacramento and KACA 34 Modesto. Has anyone heard anything about these stations's future?

KZHD 49 Santa Rosa has gone off the air, has since been sold and now has a new construction permit for Sonoma Mountain on channel 22.

The 4 Azteca channels (virtual 43) in Monterey are on BOTH RF channels now, RF 14 and the previous RF24.

I don't know why KCNZ became un-receivable by many of us a long time back. The signal strength has remained 85% but the signal quality has dropped below 50%.

Trip asked for a TSReader output for RF 28 and suddenly for a couple of hours I could receive RF 28 just fine and was able to satisfy the request.

Then RF 28 went back to signal quality below 50%. Nothing changed on my end.

KPJK RF 43 has signal strength 85%+ but signal quality below 50%. Another puzzle.

Oh the joys of multipath we do not understand.

Channel 14 is their new re-pack channel, so they're probably testing it out. How does it compare to what's on channel 24?

I noticed that they have added the new KGO channel 12 antenna above KRON's channel 7 antenna on Sutro Tower. Here's a picture taken from my living room window.

I'll try to get up to Twin Peaks to take a better picture this week.
