In 1080i, as well. Interesting to see a sub-channel in HD.

Strange that at 2300 hrs Friday March 1 they're showing "The Good Lie", which according to Bounce's website isn't scheduled until Sunday March 3.

Not strange. Bounce's schedule repeats showings of the same programs multiple times over the week. Cheap programming.

Can't you get KUVS? Bounce has been on KUVS 19.3 for years.

KFKK-LD

After years of telling the FCC that they were on the air, KFKK-LD transmitting from Modesto is actually now on the air. They filed for a License to cover today. It is on RF 32. I can't receive it but it's killing KION also on RF 32. The beam heading difference is only 7 degrees between the two stations so there's no way to separate them. Anyone close enough to Modesto to receive it?

What a poor tv transmitter location. Looks like coverage is from hwy 99 east north to almost Lodi to as far south as northern Merced.
With crumbs of coverage barely to hwy 5

With that albatross, I will try the parking lot of Bass pro shops Manteca with the battery tv.
We shall see.

Ben - What is KFKK's virtual channel or is it using channel 32, where it transmits?

According to the FCC listing, it's only running 5 kW and is beamed northwest.

The License to Cover is for this Construction Permit:

10KW with a broader pattern N-E-S.

Interesting. KKPM RC 28 has 28.1 as The Dove in 1080i. A couple of sub channels 28.2 CMCU and 28.8 KTSF shows up as 576i. My TV will not display the 576i but the TiVo can and converts it. The TV shows them as audio channels. 28.2 CMC and 28.5 Blues shows up as 480i and the TV displays the video.

If you post this over on the San Francisco thread to Keith who runs these stations you should get a response. I don't receive KKPM but I do receive KQSL-LD which has the same channels and none of them show up as 576i. They all show up as 480i.

Unfortunately, It did not show up when testing from a closed J.C. Penney store parking lot in Manteca.
Using a basic bow tie antenna + battery tv.

The ground clutter in that area is high with no real elevation advantage points except freeway overpasses. The town is basically flat.

The next trip I'll bring the "large" UHF parabolic antenna that will bring better results.

But on a side note, KPJK 60-1 did show up in Manteca. The only sutro station that scanned in.
So two things are possible, the bow tie is better tuned for the upper UHF band (soon to be obsolete for tv service)
OR reception from sutro tower is possible with a larger antenna.
This came in with the bow tie at 8 feet elevation in an empty parking lot.
Crazy.

Thanks for checking, Ben. When you find out, or someone else posts and lets me know, the virtual channel for KFKK will remain as a ? on my lists.

It's interesting that KPJK, the UHF station with half the ERP of most of the other stations, is the one you received from Sutro. Those are the findings that make TV reception so interesting for us reception fans.

I still find the reception idiosyncrasies of the Walnut Grove stations to be interesting. With my 8200U antenna pointed at the transmitter site at 55 degrees I receive 6, 10 and 58, with no signs of 13 and 31. If I turn the antenna NW at 320 degrees, I lose 6, 10 and 58, but 13 and 31 boom in at 19 to 20 dB.

I don't receive KCRA since the KGO translator is on the same channel 35. I think after the re-pack channel changes next year, I'm going to lose several channels because of all of the same-channel stations in both SF and Sacramento.

Using the antenna pattern shown in Rabbitears for KFKK, they have just 184 watts ERP in the direction of the JC Penney parking lot in Manteca. They are 14 miles distant. Since this off the back corner of the antenna pattern I don't trust it completely. I've seen some weird behavior under these circumstances. The actual power could be much different, either higher or lower. If you try this again I'd suggest finding a location farther east by at least a few miles. The ERP rises fast as you move farther east. Some place a couple miles east of of Hwy 99 would be much better. Attached is a Google Earth street view of the tower KFKK is using. I see the 93.9 sign on the tower which I assume is an FM station. I looked at my FM station list I made some years ago when I had an FM yagi up and it shows KBBU, a 4000 watt station at the correct heading and distance. I logged it as "Full Quieting in Stereo."

Walnut Grove Tour

I will be doing a tower site tour for the Mother Lode DX/Contest Club on May 11th. If there are any hams in this group that want to attend, please contact me. Depending on RSVP's I might be able to add a few more to the group.

I read where KSTV-LD, Sacramento, has switched to digital and is on channel 32 running 15 kw.

Can anyone fill me in on the programming, transmitter location and anything else that would fit into my station lists?

Thanks.

After some fooling around I managed to receive it. Because my antenna is fixed pointed through a gap in the trees to the south west from Fair Oaks toward Walnut Grove I had to dig out another antenna and stick it out on the deck trying various directions until I got a signal with a fairly flat top on the spectrum analyzer. There are houses and trees in all directions except my gap toward the south west from my normal antenna location. I have no idea what direction KSTV actually is from me but I ended up with the antenna pointed somewhat south of due east. I may be just looking at a bounce for all I know.

KSTV-LD has "Jewelry" on 32-1 and a music channel that has LNTV in the upper right on 32-2 both programs are 720x480i.

I found that KSTV 32 is transmitting from Folsom, just north of Highway 50.

I’ve got a question for Bob Hess.

First of all, thanks for continuing to enlighten us about your work and remaining a part of this forum.

Now the question. Apologies if it already has been asked. Since I got married and got rid of my c-band dish, I'm not around much anymore.

Why does the audio in the newscasts sound so tinny? It's almost like the microphones only pick up a few frequencies, and then the audio gets processed to an audio stream that could work live on a dial up internet connection. I think Channel 10 and your channel sound the worst. It’s almost a relief when a commercial comes on because of the difference in spoken sound quality.

I’m sure there is a good reason; and I’m really curious to find out what it is.

I'm not Bob Hess but was intrigued by your message. Do you find this to be a problem to some degree on all channels? You singled out KOVR and KXTV as offenders, but wondered if any of the stations sound good to you? I concur that most newscasts sound pretty bad -- I always chocked it up (mostly) to the wireless microphones used by the on-air talent. When I worked "at another station," I was always critical of the poor microphone quality, which was astounding to me considering the price tag. That said, there are certainly other factors at play -- I find that the overall audio processing (compression) applied by the station makes a huge difference. To my ears, KCRA is the *worst* in this regard -- pretty much unlistenable.

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing more about what you're hearing.

Bob,
What's with the lack of electronic programming info for KOVR? It's been missing for the last few days and the time is set an hour behind on PST instead of PDT. KMAX is fine.

I've got to admit that, if listening on a Surround Sound system, most TV station newscasts do have less than stellar audio. In our case, we use primarily Sennheiser directional lavalier microphones. These microphones spec out at 20-20,000 Hz. I checked the EQ settings on the microphone channels of our Calrec audio consoles and they're set for flat audio from 100-7,000 Hz with significant roll-off on the high and low side. If I were to set these up, I'd probably optimize them to stand out on typical television set speakers, which would result in more of a peak around 1,000-2,500 Hz.

Few listen in Surround Sound. Personally, I listen to CBS dramas on my Surround Sound system at home, but I listen to our newscasts using the internal speakers on my Sony flat screen TV's.

I am retiring at the end of the month, so won't be addressing these questions after that. Not leaving the business. Will focus on consulting.

Our problem. Should be fixed. We lost an encoder on Friday. Program Guide turned out to not be working on the backup.

Is there a listing somewhere for people who can recommend a replacement residential rooftop TV antenna and do the install?

"h t t p:// w w w. t v f o o l .c o m/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d9038f7e8f83f7 9"

I realize this isn't meant to be Angie's List and hope this newbie post ruffles no feathers, but i'm having a strangely difficult time googling up rooftop antenna installers in the Davis area. Did not find anything in the classifieds section here.

Used to watch stations from Chico to San Francisco, but the old 1979 antenna no longer turns. See all these shows OTA nowadays and feel like I'm missing out on a lot. Kind of fun browsing the posts here actually. Our 2-story roof has a steep pitch and I'm way past the point of DIY on such a job. Took me a whole weekend just to crawl around the teeny attic space and replace the actuator on whole-house fan.

Thanks for sharing any resources!

I've had several viewers recommend Alhambra TV. The contact is Bob. Phone number: 916-739-8701

Assuming he's still doing this, I was impressed that he would occasionally call me for suggestions when he was doing a difficult installation. He does seem to know what antenna is best for a particular area.
