It has to do with getting all the stations to fit without interfering with each other taking into account power, antenna patterns, etc. The FCC used software to figure this out. I don't know the details.

KSPX is directional, KMAX is not. KSPX is/was adjacent to KTLN and KSTS, while KMAX wasn't adjacent to anything in San Francisco.

Plus, recall that KSPX was not originally assigned to 21, but rather, to 22. KKPX in San Jose wanted to avoid being assigned to channel 14, and arranged a multi-channel swap that resulted in these changes:

KDJT-CD 33 -> 26
KSPX 22 -> 21
KTXL 33 -> 22
KKPX 14 -> 33

Thanks -- that's good knowledge. I was unaware the KSPX was directional, but now it all makes sense.

The Ion network has always been unwatchable, but why do they have to stay at the lower power level now until they move? I'm gonna miss 29-4, the all infomercial channel!

KSPX did not renew the lease on their current tower and chose to move to a different one. They put up a temporary antenna on the new tower, but the full-power transmitter is delayed, so they're on it at severely reduced power for the time being.

It's possible they may boost power on 48 if the transmitter comes in soon enough.

Northern California Stations Changing Channel for Re-Pack
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I put together a list of stations that will be changing their transmitter channel next Spring. Look at all of the changes! Virtual channels will remain the same as they are now, but everyone will have to re-scan when these changes are made.

Work on the antenna changes has already begun on Sutro Tower. They are planning to move the Phase 8 stations during the last week of April, 2020. and the Phase 9 stations on May 1, 2020.

See further details on the changes at the bottom of my Re-pack channel listing:

Court TV now on 40.3

FYI ... Court TV is now on 40.3, replacing “THIS.” It is presented in 16x9 SD.

Forgive me in advance if this is against the forum rules - Can anyone recommend a local installer (local-ish to Elk Grove/South Sac) that can set up a proper Antenna at my home? PlayStation Vue just announced they are cancelling the service and frankly, I have zero interest in paying for television anymore.

Based on recommendations in this forum, I just had some work done by Bob at Alhambra TV. He did a great job and I heartily recommend him. His contact info is on his website:

Interesting move. Wonder how many can receive that station? At my Pocket location, there is virtually zero signal. Looking at a spectrum analyzer, I can see just a small hint of RF when rocking the antenna back and forth in that direction. Not a chance of getting a lock on that.

Unless they're off the air or you're in one of those red dots in the coverage area shown below, it should be easy to receive with an outdoor antenna. The coverage in and around Sacramento looks pretty good.

Thanks for the coverage map, Chuck. I am not under one of those red dots, so don't really have an explanation. I do indeed have an outdoor antenna, approximately 25 feet above ground level. Below are a couple of images for you to peruse -- one is with the antenna pointed towards Walnut Grove, and the other is when pointed towards Folsom.

I don't understand what's going on in these situations. You're just 27 miles from KSAO and should be LOS so why is it so weak? KSPX is running low power and far stronger and a flatter signal than KSAO. Makes no sense.

I'm 13 miles and LOS from a station on RF 36 that has just 50 watts ERP in my direction as I'm off the back of their antenna. I measured the Noise Margin at 32 dB. Taking ERP and distance into account, KSAO should have a Noise margin around 45 db yet you can't even receive it. Weird!

Chuck

I am puzzled as well. Fortunately, I'm not clamoring to receive the station -- it's just a curiosity. For your amusement, another image is attached -- it includes the pedestals of KTXL, KQCA, and KSPX. Thought it might help to assess the antenna performance -- you can see how weak KSPX is compared to the full-power stations, though it is still much stronger than KSAO (not visible in this pic). BTW, I don't think the dB scale is useful for absolute readings, as in the software for this device (AirSpy) I can adjust the RF gain.

Wondering if you’ve heard anything about their new transmitter? Noticed recently that the signal has improved by about 10dB, so hopefully those who lost the channel during the transition can now receive it again.

They did request a new STA for more power, so presumably they've now increased power somewhat.

Thanks. If they went from 4.3 kW to 48 kW as shown in the FCC database, that would closely equate to the ~10 dB increase I’ve observed.
