Just a quick question for viewers of OTA here with a DVR.

Is it normal even if you have a good antenna setup to still get video errors at times?

I have a MythTV DVR with an HDHomeRun DUAL and with my indoor antenna and amp it says 100% Signal Strength, 100% Signal Quality (sometimes for 10-30 seconds bounces down to 85-96 but then jumps back to 100), and most importantly always 100% Symbol Quality.

I know that you can obviously get video errors if you have bad signal, but should you still see them even after verifying your signal numerous times and having many recordings in a row error-free?

I sometimes wonder if it's the station themselves sometimes as recording MeTV & WJAC back in my cable days, it still would result in video errors even though my cable signal was verified stable.

Just a friendly reminder that WJAC is to move frequencies on or around 7/30.

Does anybody have any more info on this WPCW JTown Translator Ch 30?

I tried looking up info, but oddly can't find a whole lot of info like news articles or anything.

Does anybody know if this is being built for a fact now? I've heard of WPCW Translators for JTown for years now but never seen anything.

Myself, family, & friends are all rabbit ears users now, especially since cable won't stop going up. It has to be $40+ just for locals now.

We would be so glad if this actually gets built as supposedly the city of Johnstown could actually receive something else besides just WJAC.

I am glad for NBC, MeTV, Comet, & TBD, but frustrating to not be able to receive anything else in the city even though the city is named in the DMA......

WPCW's channel 30 translator is on the air. Saw it when I went through the area in April.

Oh wow, I don't seem to see it at all in the actual city of Johnstown even with an amp.

Looks like I am in a red/no color area of the map and some of my family are in no color areas.

Seems no one I know in the various areas of Johnstown/suburbs can pick it up, Ch 30 just is 100% dead for us.

If you are down in the valley, reception is gong to be a challenge. It was for communities like Johnstown that community antenna systems were developed in the 1950s and that evolved into the cable systems of today.
I’m at almost 1600’ in Brownstown and can pick up the Altoona stations easily. I have a hard time getting Fox 8, but do receive WPCW most of the time. All this with a rooftop antenna.

Somebody I know up in Richland can't pick it up either. So it must be very selective where it will reach.

I wish more stations did some form of Internet broadcasting like many subchannels are doing at least for people like me where reception isn't great.

So much programming is only syndicated on local stations and not put online.

As redpenguin pointed out (thank you!) WJAC Johnstown was moving frequencies from channel 34 to 35. A channel re-scan will pick it back up. Translators 22 and 26 are staying as are.

Does anyone have dates for WTAJ and WATM?

I believe they are all scheduled to change over on Aug 1.
They all should begin running crawls with the details starting 30 days prior.

So I’m sure there is some wonderful reason, but why are WTAJ and WATM essentially exchanging channels?

Also, is there any chance anyone outside of Altoona will be able to receive WKBS after they move to channel 6? I’m not saying I find a lot to watch on there, but I like having it as an option.

Will WTOO’s signal benefit in a noticeable way from having a channel buffer between it and RF24? It would be nice to be able to receive it finally.

Thanks for any and all help. 🙂

Edit: I realized after I posted this that I definitely still won’t receive WTOO because it shares the same channel as WJAC’s Altoona translator station which I receive.

How can I be sure in a world that's constantly changing?

The only rationale I see for the WTAJ and WATM channel changes comes down to $. Changing channels as part of the repack means more reimbursement from the FCC’s repack pool.
WKBS gets a nice bit of cash to move from UHF to VHF-Lo. They have cable carriage, so I’m not sure OTA reception will be a huge consideration.
As for WTOO, I have no idea what’s going on there. As I understand they transmit from the WJAC tower atop Laurel Mountain.

It's more complicated than just Johnstown, you have to look at all the moves in surrounding markets, the markets that surround those markets and the markets that surround those markets. In order to keep spacing and coverage areas/signal patterns they had RF numbers move in clusters. WTAJ has a very different signal pattern and a larger contour than WATM, WTAJ is pretty much non directional and WATM is highly directional mostly to the northeast.

i.e. RF 21 is going to be taken by several stations that were displaced from the 600 MHz band like WPNT in Pittsburgh, WEDW in CT, WROC in Rochester, WEFG in Philly, WSBK in Boston and even some Canadian stations, so a bunch of RF 21s are moving to RF 32 in Phase 4, including WHP in Harrisburg, so WTAJ can't stay on RF 32 with the pattern they have.

WKBS is adding Court TV soon....but I had no idea they were moving from UHF. Both Cornerstone and Court TV are free on roku which is good because there is no need for a new antenna.

I am not surprised considering WPCB added it, Bounce TV, and Quest. There is something else planned for 40-5 as Pittsburgh Faith & Family channel now down four slots to 40-6.

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here for many years as I had changed to DirecTV. Have been thinking of going back to Atlantic Broadband for months and now that I can't get WTAJ am really thinking of moving. Was wondering if someone could give me some answers. I am looking to see any fees (DVR, HD, locals etc etc) that will be on top of the price of my TV package. I have had Atlantic Broadband internet since 2001 and have no complaints on that. I have my own cable modem and wireless router.

I will be using one TV and a DVR.

Many thanks in advance

Butch

I didn't mention. I live off Sylvan Heights Drive in Hollidaysburg and even though I am only a few miles from Wopsy, I am behind the mountain and it is uphill in the direction of the transmitters and trees and houses in the way so even with outside antenna OTA signals are weak and many dropouts.

If WTAJ is your main concern, you might consider getting CBS All Access. It's $5.99 a month with a one week free trial. You'll get a stream of WTAJ, CBS News Network, and on-demand access to CBS programming.

At this point, do not want to go the streaming route. Hoping Nexstar and DirecTV get there dispute settled pretty soon. Still considering Atlantic Broadband though.

My advice would be forget ABB and sign up with Dish Network. Its gonna be cheaper with a lot more channels. ABB has the local channel surcharge at 11.50, sports programming surcharge 8.67, and not sure on DVR fee. Their internet is great I have no complaints but the cable sucks....my opinion

Can anyone verify that WJAC has moved to its new channel as scheduled? (I don't know what time of day it is supposed to happen, so it may not have happened yet.)

That's WTAJ. WJAC is scheduled to move today, according to the NAB's TVAnswers website.
