**Solved**

I resetup WMC using my zipcode and this time chose "SALT LAKE CITY" rather than "SALT LAKE CITY SURRO" and now 5.1 works perfectly.

KENV Elko loses NBC affiliation

from ftvlive.com

http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/201...ns-affiliation
NBC PULLS SINCLAIR STATION'S AFFILIATION

NBC has decided to pull their affiliation at a Sinclair station and Sinclair is now pulling the plug on the station's news department.

Sinclair operated KENV in Elko, Nevada is no longer an NBC affiliate. The Peacock pulled it on December 31st.

The station is now a "Comet" station (whatever that is).

Sinclair has also decided to end doing newscasts on the station. KENV's only locally-produced newscast was an hour-long weekday morning show, with the rest of the newscasts simulcasted from KRNV in Reno (even though KENV's coverage area is technically in the Salt Lake City market).

"KENV was prepared to remain the NBC affiliate for the Nevada side of the Salt Lake City market, but was unable to renew the affiliation agreement with NBC," Sinclair said.

No word on how many people lost their job.

New to thinking about dropping dish and going with streaming (Tablo or the like) as Google fiber is being installed on my house this week. Wouldn't it be best to use the DISH coaxial cable on my roof to connect to a rooftop antenna since the cable is already there? (I live above foothill blvd on the east bench) If so, any suggestions on the antenna?

Thanks

Utilizing the satellite dish's coax is absolutely fine.

For the antenna, I have 2 of these: https://www.amazon.com/Channel-Maste...s=stealthtenna

Low profile and low cost. I use one to look at Little Farnsworth peak and the other to look down to West Mountain. The last scan I ran, I had ~72 channels.

ATSC 3.0 in SLC

Any word on ATSC 3.0 in Salt Lake? All the recent press releases from CES still show that we're on the list of markets that will begin broadcasting later this year, but I haven't been able to find any specifics about which stations might participate and when.

This reminds me of the transition to HDTV in the late 90's. I think KSL was the first to broadcast in HD and maybe KUED that ran a loop of snippets of HD programing from PBS. But you had to have a separate tuner box and of course a display capable of displaying 1080p (I had a Sony CRT projector that fit the bill). We would watch this thread to see when new stations came on line with HD transmissions. It was a slow process with minimal HD content to start with.

Many folks now have 4k TVs, but getting them to buy a tuner box -- especially since most are likely not using OTA transmissions for content -- might be a hard sell.

I still use OTA and often find the picture quality to better than cable. If reasonably priced, I would certainly spring for a tuner box to get 4k OTA.

I remember reading the threads on here back in those days, figuring out what equipment I needed to get so I could be ready when our local transmitters switched on. Now it's the same thing all over again, but I haven't seen anything about any ATSC 3.0 boxes coming out. The first TVs with 3.0 support should be out in the spring, though, and it's really tempting to start looking into those.

One article I found says "Sinclair, Fox Television Stations, Nexstar, and NBCUniversal" announced ATSC 3.0 deployment, so that sounds like 2, 4, & 5 will be the ones around here, although no date is given. It just says we're in the first group.

Update to my last post:

The owners of channels 2, 4, 13, and 30 have all said they would be upgrading to ATSC 3.0 this year. Channels 5 and 7 probably will as well, but they haven't publicly said anything on the subject. However, as of 2/17/2020, nobody has submitted an application to do so. So, we'll see.

Anticipation...

I'm guessing that means one station will upgrade and the other three will put their 3.0 signals on that one station. Meanwhile, the subchannels from the one station that actually upgrades will be split among the other participating stations.

That seems to be the plan in other markets.

Most of the full power TV stations in the SLC/Provo area belong to DTV Utah, and broadcast from the same facility/tower on Little Farnsworth Peak. Thirteen is the only major TV station that has its own facility/tower. (Made it interesting when, in 2009, equipment failure (the outage was caused when the control system for the RF Combiners went down.) caused all of the channels to go dark. With the exception of channel 13, all major TV stations were off the air for several days.)

It will be interesting to see just what they all do.

Can anyone get channel 32 (KUTH)? I can't even find anything there. Granted, I'm in Herriman, but I ought to be able to at least see something with a rooftop antenna and a meter -- even if it's unwatchable.

KUTV and KJZZ made their ATSC 3.0 filings:
https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/da...a1331&goBack=N
https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/da...d0d05&goBack=N

KJZZ will convert to ATSC 3.0 on RF 19

And for the ATSC 1.0 simulcasts:
14.1 KJZZ will be on KUCW's RF 35 signal
14.2 Comet will be on KUTV's RF 34 signal
14.3 TBD will be on KTVX's RF 30 signal
14.4 Charge! will be on KTVX's RF 30 signal
14.5 DABL will be on KUTV's RF 34 signal

so from the filing for KUTV on this project to 3.0 the new KJZZ 3.0

will also carry KUTV? Am I reading the FCC filing correctly?

Yeah, the other stations made their filings today, as of now KJZZ's ATSC 3.0 signal will contain KJZZ, KUTV, KUCW and KTVX

That's great news! Now, we just need KSL and KSTU to follow suit. KUED would also be nice.

Yes. There aren't many to choose from right now. Who knows just when they'll get on the air, so I'm waiting until then to get mine. Maybe the price will come down a little by then, too. Plus, there's the warranty thing. Get it now with a 1 year warranty but they don't go on the air until the end of the year, and it's effectively a 6 month warranty.

Depends on where in Saratoga Springs you are and the antenna you have. If you're east of Redwood and further south, you may be able to. You'd need 2 antennas, though -- 1 pointed north to the west side of the Salt Lake valley, and 1 pointed west towards West Mountain. West Mountain has channel 32 (KUTH), while everything else comes from Salt Lake.

I'm in Herriman, and I can't get 32. Some of the LPTV stations come in with very low signal strength, too. You may only get 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, (possibly 24), and 30 (full power stations). The 2nd antenna would get you ch. 32.

If you live on the north end, you'd probably only get ch. 32. West side might get you stuck with only 32 as well.

While most of the channels are NNW of you, ch 32 is WSW of you. Being so close, though, it may actually be shooting over you. I don't know. You're far enough south that you just might be out of the shadow of the hills just north of Saratoga, which could enable you to get some of the channels I listed earlier. I think it's worth a try, but if you do and it doesn't pan out, don't be too surprised.
