The nation’s largest satellite broadcaster told the FCC earlier this month that it would need to invest an extra $250 million to add all remaining local broadcast signals to its channel lineup.

DirecTV met with the FCC last week to update the commission on its plans for carrying local broadcast signals in HD. Details of the Oct. 2 meeting were released this week in a memorandum.

Yes it would! But I guess there's little chance of LIN cooperating, especially with Munsen working there....

Yep...I was coming on here to post the same thing. It started out as HD, they switched. Does this have anything to do with the sun fade like last week?

Here we go again. I wonder if anyone keeps stats on how many live sporting events are actually broadcast in HD for 100% of the broadcast.

The measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.

And it was beautiful PQ before the switch! This morning during the Today show, WAVY-DT (both OTA and on Cox) was impossible to watch with cut-outs galore, had to watch it on analog. This was not just the network feed, but the local cut-ins as well. I was worried the game was going to end up the same way.

Having a lot of picture noise, picture cut-outs, sound cut outs, etc. tonight during the game on 10-01. Noticed the same on my recording of SNL last night. Signal strength is excellent. This is normally my steadiest channel! Anyone else having problems?

i saw some of the game in 4:3 on wvbt-Dt 43-1, but i switched to D* HD ch 721 to see the fantasy updates on the screen. thank u D* for not blacking out the HD games.

For me WAVY-DT has been bad all day long. But I noticed the problem was a lot worse using my Dish 622 receiver than my Mits LT-37131 tuner.

I've been seeing the same thing the past few days on multiple OTA channels. Not sure what's going on. Atmospheric issues maybe??

Could be - this evening, some of the Richmond channels were being received off the back of my antenna. This hasn't happen very often.

Just a guess: more equipment upgrades at the station is the reason for the recent problems.

They happen everywhere (ecept perhaps the North Pole).

Solar Transits happen when the earth's rotation, orbit and inclination cause the sun to appear directly in the focus of the satellite antenna. The sun actually appears to pass directly behind the satellite. Think of looking into a spotlight or flashlight beam and trying to read something between your eye and the flashlight. The light is blinding. In a similar manner, the intense e-m radiation from the Sun comes directly into focus at the receive antenna inside the LNB, and the energy swamps the preamplifier ("front end") with so much energy that the desired satellite signal is overwhelmed.

Solar transits occur in the Fall and Spring. Since the Earth's tilt makes the sun appear to move Northward in the Spring, Spring solar transits affect the Southern latitudes first, and over the period of a few weeks work their way up North. In the Fall, the reverse is true - Northern located receivers are affected days before the Southern locations. And they always affect the East before the West.

Usually the intensity is at peak for only 4 or 5 days, with the actual signal interruption lasting only a few minutes.

There are software applications, or in some cases online calculators, for each of the satellite providers, which predict with great accuracy when these transits will affect the particular location of a customer's earth station.

As an example, I was in charge of two facilities in Northern New York a few years ago, with the receive antennas located about 120 miles apart. The calculations showed, and experience proved, that the solar transit-caused sun outages began in the more eastern location (near Syracuse) about 1-1/2 to 2 minutes before affecting a location between Rochester and Buffalo. And our stations in the more Southerly reions would follow us (or preceed us - depending on whether if was Fall or Spring) by a few days. wb

I noticed that sometime over the last week or so that WAVY now has the current Time/Temp in place in HD during the Today show. Les, is the local HD Crawl next on the agenda there? Oh, that's right, I forgot that the TimeTemp is a device provided by the network.

I missed this... I usually watch every morning... no weekends. If so, it looks like WAVY and WVEC are a big step closer to HD crawls for emergencies, EAS, school/weather closings, severe weather, etc...

The time/temp device is at our studio but is triggered off & on remotely by the network. Getting that device plumbed-in and operating is part of the same ongoing project that got 5.1 audio to air for the Saturday Today Show and will eventually result in getting the other HD graphics device on air.

It debuted either Thursday or Friday morning. I had no idea it would help WVEC get a big step closer.

At one point this morning (Sunday) I saw, what looked like, 2 different texts laying on top of each other in the time/temp area during The Today Show.
It made it completely unreadable. Maybe the SD and HD text strings were being displayed at one time, but there were definitely 2 on top of each other one time on Sunday's broadcast.
