Does the signal originate in Tennessee?

Anything that can be learned about this will be much appreciated.

You work for WHKY don't you? Do you have a time frame for the move to the new tower? Do you think the move will impact the signal in the N.E. part of the city? I am only around 2 miles from the present tower down past the Rec Center.

The problem signal is WJHL TV in Johnson City, TN. They put a signal into Hickory. The signal is on the back side of the antenna used to look at WTVI. They are both on Channel 11. This will have a new signal path in the next several weeks that will fix the problem for good.
Regarding the move to Baker Mt for WHKY TV. It will make the Sept 14, 2011 permit date. So will the DTS on WTVI's Charlotte tower.

Both WTVI and the Johnson City station broadcast on Channel 11....the translator in Hickory is receiving channel 11 from Johnson City instead of channel 11 from Charlotte. This will be fixed if WTVI microwaves it signal on the return path of WHKY signal to its Charlotte DTS transmitter.

I was under the impression that WTVI's DTS in Hickory was actually broadcasting on UHF 14 instead of VHF 11 as it does here in CLT.

It is, but they pick up the main signal on channel 11 to retransmit.

Yes, I was under the same impression as you. That is that the translator for WTVI in Hickory operates on 'RF' 14. So I am not sure what this translator has to do with the situation that Country Boy described. Perhaps, someone else can clear that up

I do know the Johnson City affiliate, WJHL, operates on RF11.....just like main WTVI out of Charlotte operates on RF11.

Wait..... What you said doesn't make much sense. Where is it picked up?

This isn't xmitted via microwave to Hickory?

Antenna TV is definitely on the air in Charlotte now. The on-line guide still shows it "coming soon" but I've been watching it now since 5:30.

It's a good reason to watch channel 46 again. I haven't watched it since Babylon V went off this channel in the late 90s.

Nope. I've bolded the relevant sentences.

Like most translators, WTVI-11 is being picked up over the air and retransmitted on channel 14.

If they can pick up standard channel 11 in from Charlotte in Hickory, it then why bother to re-transmit it at all? I'm not convinced you have this right.

Because they have professional high-gain equipment on a tall tower that a typical home viewer doesn't have?

Trip is correct.

The current path is an "off air pickup" of channel 11 from the Charlotte tower. This will change. It will travel as a "back haul" on the WHKY signal path going to the DTS-2 site in Charlotte in the next several weeks.

WHKY can not be a off air pickup because the input and output frequency is equal.(DTS-1 & DTS-2 both RF Ch 40) Also the transmit time of the data has to be equal on all DTS transmitter, as do the frequencies of the carriers. Even if you could pickup the signal you could never time it.

The WTVI translator is located at the WHKY TV Studio in downtown Hickory, with a receive antenna 90 feet AGL.

As far as I know ALL of the current translators in the Charlotte market are getting their signal off air at this point.

(See the following post #3601 from Ted Hand today @ 1:16PM)

"64.7 is back up..again. We are having issues receiving WAXN 64.1. We will be looking at a pre-amp and maybe antenna change."

This is very common.

Yep, I noticed 64-7 was pixelating with a few drops earlier in the evening on Friday. I guess the upgrade on main WAXN in CLT has negatively impacted the translator in China Grove. At least it's back on now, but not rock solid the way it was.

Ahh OK, I was wondering why they would do this (WTVI) when they have licenses to operate several microwave transmitters point. In any case, I see why channel 11 in Tennessee could interfer with this operation.

I'm impressed at the PQ on Antenna TV and the fact they got it on air as quick as they did after it was announced. Right now it seems the best of all the subchannels available in CLT. Nice job to whoever did it.

I've got a homebuilt 4 bay sitting inside the house on the ground floor without a reflector and it's getting this station fine along with all the other stations local to the area, except for 14 & 30. I'll be able to get 30, WNSC, once I mount my 8 bay outside, but it's been too hot to bother with right now. 14? Who knows. I've never seen any evidence this signal exists.

I am very happy with "This-TV" "Me-TV" and "Antenna-TV" a nice alternative to the standard network fare. Life is good, my TiVo is well fed.

Yep, I agree, both to the "nice alternative" and to the need to record/time shift to get the max out of them. Many of the shows I like, "12 O'Clock High", "Combat", Highway Patrol", and "Sea Hunt" air in the wee hours. They keep my CM-7000PAL DVR busy.

The PQ on 46.2 AntennaTV is terrific for SD. I wish that all SD sub-channels were that good. Some, such as 18.3 MeTV look pretty choppy on a large screen flat panel.

I installed a pre-amp at China Grove today (sunday) on the RF50 feed. I increase the SNR by 6db on the receive side. I hope this will fix the 64.7 stream,

At least through Dish's feed from Tribune Media Services for the online guide, has reverted back to showing info for 46.1 instead of AntennaTV. Looks as if someone might have forgotten to do an update.

I spent an hour or so watching WJZY/46.2/Antenna TV last night OTA. Impressive, crystal clear 4:3 SD picture, much like THIS TV on WBTV. ME-TV's poor PQ on WCCB will not be able to compete with this at all. I'm going to enjoy Antenna and look forward to them landing on Comporium so I can watch on my primary TV.

I am glad to hear you installed a booster on the China Grove WAXN translator so that it can better see main WAXN 64-1. I've been gone all day, but as of a little while ago, I was getting 85% signal strength off the translator on 64-7. I appreciate your efforts as I am sure others do that rely on the China Grove translator for coverage. As you said, hopefully this will fix the 64.7 stream.

Indeed. I notice there is a stark difference in PQ between AntennaTV & THIS vs MeTV. I've been enjoying the programming on AntennaTV. It will be interesting to see if they bring anything to 55.2

WHKY's sub-channels look good to me considering the shows that are being broadcast. I love it. I hope the people in the Charlotte area will be able to pick up WHKY signals soon. They show a LOT of REALLY old shows that you won't see anywhere else.

But if you are expecting a crystal clear high definition picture, you may be disappointed. Take it for what it is: Old shows that you might have grown up with that others don't show. I like it because of the variety of series and the very old movies.

For that matter, all of the sub-channels that I get from Hickory and Charlotte are awesome.

The only complaint I would have is about the picture quality of some of the shows on 14.4 MyFamilyTV network. While Jeff's Collie and Route 66 look very good,Shotgun Slade,The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean,Roy Rogers and Ozzie and Harriet look bad most of the time.It seems there should be better prints of those shows somewhere. The movies I have tried to watch on there look even worse.

Other examples of shows that Luken aired on RTV would be Wagon Train and the Virginian. Now that these two shows are airing on Encore Westerns channel, the prints look pristine compared to the ones I saw on RTV.

Perhaps some of those old shows such as Roy Rogers have been digitally remastered whereas some have not ... And speaking of Roy Rogers, they recently opened 2 new Roy Rogers restaurants in northern Virginia. Much better roast beef than Arby's. Wish Hugh McColl could buy into another great franchise and bring Roy's back to Greensboro and Charlotte. Now that he has sold off Bojangle's.

Thanks Steve..btw..the data for the wx ...is actually part of the WCCB (and WOLO) system here...and remotely updated & managed by the wx geeks from here too....One of these days I'll put a BFA on the roof and see if I can get WFXB on a good night.
