WCNC will broadcast New Years Eve party live from Carowinds. Larry Sprinkle host. I don't know if they preempt Lester Holt on NBC live from New York. Kathy Lee and Hoda also have 2018 flashback special on NBC. And Ryan Seacrest return on ABC replace Dick Clark. They may have New Year event in Uptown Charlotte, but no longer telecast on WBTV. I will probably switch between WCNC and WYFF depend upon what preempt on WCNC. And maybe switch between 9 or 13 to see what Times Square doing.

What's with all the flood warnings for Chesterfield and Lancaster Counties? It seems like every time we get a light mist those warnings for Chesterfield and Lancaster begin scrolling across the screen. Is it really that bad down there? I rarely see any mention of actual flooding on the news, except after thunderstorms and tropical storms.

Escape (64.3) added Law & Order and Boston Legal to their lineup. Wish they would make their logo transparent after the initial credits, it's full bright white all the time....very distracting.

WCNC very fuzzy

Has anyone else noticed that WCNC is very soft and has a lot of blocking. I thought it was Spectrum cable, but I switched to my OTA last night and the Tonight Show looked liked it was shot thru gauze. I first noticed this on their local news, cameras very soft, so I thought it was a studio issue. But now even the network feed passing thru them is very soft.

I am watching the news this morning and you are right there is a haze in the picture quality, maybe someone can chime in to see if their bit rate is off or something.

All Comments made are my own and not of my employer.

I’m sorry but WCNC is just not HD anymore. The Today show this morning is so soft, so blurry, such fuzzed out graphics that the only thing I can call it is enhanced SD.

I took some shots off my LG OLED

I haven't watched them lately but will make a point to later in the day. Perhaps they have some sort of equipment failure and actually are sending out a 16:9 SD picture for the time being? That definitely does not look HD.

With all the stations at the mercy of MPEG-2 compression for now they are all running HD-Lite.

Yes but WCNC is suddenly much softer than they have ever been. That is why I went OTA to confirm it was not a Specturm bandwidth issue.

Hopefully it is a temporary technical problem, because they have not added any additional subchannels to detract from the bit rate. But some of the subchannels don't look as good either, as I was watching Decades last week and the video sharpness kept dropping in and out on 36.3. Hopefully they can correct the problem. Someone should call their engineer and inquire, as the Technology number should still be listed on the website.

Boone NC Reception

So while up in Boone this weekend, I played around with an antenna out on the balcony of my house atop of Snaggy Mountain. Elevation 3710'

I used the 1byone 85-100 mile amplified antenna that I had laying around mid-day Sunday on a sunny day from the upper deck.

The reception was nothing close to RabbbitEars predicted which is interesting.

I do get WCYB and WJHL as well as WUNE.

WBTV, WCNC, and WSOC were solid. So was WCWG CW 20 from Lexington NC

No WCCB-DT..however WCCB's W20DD-D Smith Mtn was solid, but not even a whisper of WSOC's W42DR-D.. Sorry Ted...

No WJZY either.

The Samsung tv found WXII, WSPA, and a few others but could not decode them. Looks like more play time is coming when i can get Zaxcom and ybsane to hold the ladder.

You bet..especially since it is a bit colder in Boone than it is here!
Tho I will feed you well afterwards with a nice big burger!
Did I mention I need an Ses-3 dish installed up there? Actually it’s the same one you installed here..

But Raycom apparently still own the ACC telecasts as the college games must not be a part of the Gray deal. Raycom games still telecast on WBTV.

I can confirm you can get WSOC in Spartanburg County from the Crowders translator on RF30. My new location Inman area 29349 with indoor Winegard Elite antenna on top of kitchen cabinet. Hopefully Sunday I will get main 4228 preamp antenna in attic to get strong reception all channels. Still busy unpacking but very pleased with reliable reception of Channel 9. But can only get WCNC and WJZY on living room TV with Antop antenna on sofa. WBTV, WYFF, WSPA, WHNS no problem all TVs. Hopefully attic antenna will get everything strong one location for all TVs.

I have often watched WAXN 64.1, but I rarely watched 64.3 Escape until 'Boston Legal' was added. Something strange is going on which I don't understand. On 64.3 there are frequent frame freezes and pixelation. I never get these glitches on 64.1 or 64.2, which are both rock solid. When I checked 64.4 there was minor pixelation sometimes, but not very often.

Signal strength on my TiVo Roamio OTA's meter is consistently excellent and stable on 64.3 and 4, exactly the same as 64.1 and 2. So, what's causing the glitches on 64.3 and to a much smaller extent on 64.4?

I've had issues starting about 3 months ago with all of 64. Wonder if they reshaped/re-directed their signal or reduced their power after repacking occurred. Didn't watch much on 64 until they started L&O and B.L.. Trying to record, but ends up with corrupted files, so I stopped watching 64...too bad.

They look bit rate starved to me.

Problem with 64 may be with the multiplexing of some of the subchannels. As stated the bit rate may be lower on 64.3 and 64.4, as they probably have most of the bit rate going to the HD signal on 64.1. But they do a great job running 2 HD channels on 9.1 and 9.2 which look very good, so hopefully they can adjust concerns with 64.

Also they are currently not simulcasting 64 on the Crowders translator, only main 9.1. Hopefully they will add it again and will consider an HD feed in the future like both 9.1 and 9.2 are both HD.

And the channel change has not occurred yet as it is apparently scheduled for September. In some markets a few channels have moved early because the cellular companies wanted the channel, but I have heard Charlotte repack is still scheduled for September. I guess stations are busy preparing now as they may have to acquire new antennas and transmission equipment.

I can recommend the Winegard 7500 Elite amplified antenna if you want a good compact antenna. I have it temporarily on top of kitchen cabinet without the reflector, Spartanburg County 29349. And it pulls in Dallas signals from Charlotte and WSOC translator from Crowders Mtn. Also gets WSPA and WLOS VHF channels without the VHF dipole attached. I am only using the UHF part which is shaped like a capital letter I. Small and lightweight, good compact high gain antenna. Built in amp.

Haven't been here in a while, but - as a weather junkie - I'll take a stab here. Without looking back, those were likely "river" flood warnings. With all the rain the past few months, creeks and rivers are already elevated, so little rain is necessary to cause flooding. These warnings are likely the result of rain that has fallen upstream in NC and not necessarily over Chesterfield or Lancaster counties. It can take up to a week for all of that water in NC to work it's way downstream into SC. The problem is you don't see THOSE details in lower-screen scroll - all you see is a "A Flood Warning is in effect for __________ until 7pm Saturday" or something similar. Typically, if the expiration is a few days out, then it's likely a "river" flood warning which covers the period when the river rises above flood stage until it falls below flood stage. For more details about such warnings, check the local National Weather Service office's webpage.

Raycom Sports was not a part of the deal. That's where the real money is.

Actually if you go to the "companies" then "production groups" section of Gray's website, there's Raycom Sports.
