WSOC is now the new official station of the Carolina Panthers. More promotional coverage and preseason games.

They must be having an issue system wide. WGHP in High Point is also having an ongoing audio issue with Spectrum that they can't seem to fix.

It does appear to be bigger than I originally thought. I now hear the same issue on WCCB. I have no clue why some stations are affected vs others, but I am yet to hear this problem on WBTV or WSOC, WJZY, WTVI or on any other non-local channels on Spectrum.

Maybe certain stations are sharing a bad QAM or some other piece of equipment in the signal path? I used to get a QAM Excel chart from someone who no longer works at TWC-Spectrum, but not in some time now.

Thumbs down

Audio drops are getting worse. Now every couple of minutes. Spectrum turned the knob the wrong way.

Since the Charlotte broadcasters are preparing for the repack in September, are they also planning to upgrade to the ATSC 3.0 standard by 2020 as the article suggests? Looks like it would be more cost efficient to do it all at the same time.
ATSC 3.0 is not backward compatibility with ATSC 1.0. Tuner boxes/TV that receive ATSC 3.0 will not be out in force until Christmas 2020. It would be suicide for stations to go ATSC 3.0 now, nobody could view them. Transmitters sold and installed for FCC repack easily convert to ATSC 3.0. All the ATSC 3.0 "work" would be on the studio end.

Even then...Until a viable business plan is developed...Not to mention no one wants to accept that the lighthouse idea
is fundamentally flawed...no one has any idea what the mvpd’s will do with it..dare we mention the significant revenues generated by retrans consent?...plus I’m sure that WSOC’s highly rated news department will be more than willing to take the leap here at a risk of ratings... right Ted??..

Does WCCB want to reduce their Duke Power bill? Because FCC file says their repack power level has now been slightly reduced from the previously announced 1000kw for channel 18. Wish they would stay full power for those of us in the fringes. Right now I often pull in 27 in Spartanburg County with attic antenna, but sometimes it drop out during the day. Right on the edge but hope for better results when they move to 18.

And strange I can't pull in WSOC on 34 from the similar location, but need to tinker with the antenna in the attic. Right now I get WSOC on 30 but worry when they move to 12, although map look better. Maybe try a different preamp.

I am truly puzzled by your replies lately. There were indepth explanations to explain frequency, power output, and HAAT.

Wsoc / waxn

After the transition, WSOC will be on channel 19 at 1000Kw...WAXN will be on channel 32 at 200Kw, an increase from 150Kw, however, it will still be a directional pattern

Well WSOC and WCCB transmit from the same basic area and power level. So you would think you would get both about the same. But perhaps issues from the fringes or factors involving the antenna in the attic. But I do wonder why WCCB may slightly reduce repack power, as they had been previously approved for 1000kw if I recall correctly. But I guess just wait and see what happens in September and adjust the antennas as necessary at that time. Just would be nice to still get WCCB and one of the WSOC signals. Should still get all the Dallas signals.

Unless they’ve filed another amendment if you read closely you’ll see WCCB also has switched to a side mount in the latest filing. They will preserve their current coverage/viewer counts but the increase in area/viewers they were originally projected to have were basically erased by the change based on the estimates on rabbitears

I was just wondering why they changed their plans. With a side mount they must want to maximize their signal in a specific area, and the power change must be to comply with FCC regulations. Perhaps someone knowledgeable could explain if they are allowed or choose to do so.

Yeah I can see where that 37 watts affects the power bill too, Bob is going green with that reduction. AOC will give him a thumbs up.

I never said it was a huge change, but when you are on the fringes like some of us that kind of change can actually make a difference. It isn’t as relevant now though since WSOC picked up the Panthers rights

New 18 height and power level are slightly lower than 27, but coverage area is actually about one mile wider. Must be due to new elliptical pattern or some other factor. Still curious why they didn't choose to top mount and stay full power, but perhaps economic or other technical factors. Perhaps cheaper to side mount and FCC policy requires slight power reduction.

I've seen the actual channel reassignments for the upcoming repack, but how about virtual channel changes? Will there be any?

My concern about virtual channels changes for OTA channels is the delay in getting program guide updates for my Roamio OTA. For example, CoziTV changed virtual channels from 40.1 to 22.1 back in March. TiVo still has the program guide for Cozi on 40.1 with no video, while the video is on 22.1 with no guide info.

No, will not change.. A stations legacy branding will remain. You have a very valid concern tho.

Would you share where you heard that? Certainly news to me, and bad news at that. Decades may not be a 24/7 watch but lots of oldies air there which are seldom available elsewhere. I would miss Decades and I would probably do the same to CourtTV whcih I do to the bible-thumper channels, click the hide option, and poof, gone.

From the Court TV website most likely; same place I heard it.

Decades seems like it's on the way out. The CBS O&Os dropped it to launch Start TV, and in places where Weigel has added networks, it has prioritized H&I and Start TV over Decades and Movies!

Speaking of 'Movies!' - I hope WJZY doesn't have any plans on getting rid of their Movies! subchannel. However, they probably do need to trim down some of their other sub-channels.
