Channel 10 & 62 Signal Sharing

Just noticed that channels 10 and 62 are now sharing RF 34. Both are 1080i resolution along with their 480i sub-channels. there goes picture quality! At least the bit rate for WCAU is higher than WWSI. In New York the situation is the opposite, channel 47 (WNJU) has a higher bit rate than channel 4 (WNBC) and that's NBC's flag ship station.

WHYY 12.2 and 12.3... wrong aspect ratio

For some reason, WHYY today is broadcasting subchannels 12.2 and 12.3 as 480i 4:3 aspect ratio, even though the content on those subchannels is (and has been for some time) 480i 16:9 aspect ratio. Up until as recently as today, they always broadcast them flagged as 16:9 so everything looked fine, but now they're squished horizontally. Other 480i 16:9 channels such as 3.2 and 10.2 are proper as they always were.

I know many 3rd rate channels make this mistake, but it seems very unusual that WHYY would screw this up after doing it right for well over a year.

They are now sharing the 12 rf signal with WNCN channel 44 in Princeton. 44-1 now has 720P and 6x9. Our public tv station which we support now shares their signal with an infomercial station and the 2 sub channels of WHYY have weaker resolution. If you rescan 12 you will get 44-1 added to your stations.

You mean WMCN. Both WMCN-HD and WMCN2 are now shared on RF ch 12, 44.1 & 44.2 respectively.

That may well be, but that has nothing to do with why WHYY is broadcasting 12.2 and 12.3 with the incorrect aspect ratio flag; it has been correct for a long time, but now is wrong.

The fact that they're muxing in additional digital streams from another station (thereby necessitating a reduction in bit rate/picture quality on their own streams) is unfortunate, but an orthogonal discussion.

Well, the top guy on that totem pole is apparently the Media Technology Manager. Station receptionist said she'd let him know, though I don't hold out much hope for that.

It doesn't say that in the FCC's LMS.

Wow, it only took them 2 days to do that; I'd say I'm impressed, but they shouldn't have broken it in the first place.

Hmmm... rabbitears.info is showing WTVE and WPHY moving (or already moved) to RF 22, with WHYY and WMCN moving from RF 12 to RF 13 at the repack.

The FCC site shows WTVE and WPHY-CD as guests of WHYY in the future .

www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps . Go to this site and enter Philadelphia in the box . A list of stations will appear on the left . Click on WTVE and WPHY-CD and the info about going to WHYY will appear .

That page is incorrect and I will notify the right people to try and get it fixed.

New RF for WFMZ and Wlvt

As of today, WFMZ and WLVT are broadcasting on RF9, joining WBPH and WPPT on that RF. For the time being, they are also simulcasting on their old RFs of 46 and 39 respectively.

Scroll in notice to viewers states July 18 is the end date for Channel 46 . I've noticed in the last few days that the Channel 9 signal is much stronger in Northern New Jersey . Probably the result of the switch to WFMZ's tower .

Unfortunately for me, the received power levels here in Central Montco are significantly down on both 46 and 9. With ch 31 (WPPX-ION) changing towers in late Feburary and no no longer able to get a channel lock on it, I am quickly losing ability to receive OTA channels altogether. I can't wait for other stations to repack

I get the feeling this repacking was actually a plan by Comcast and its ilk to force people to abandon OTA television reception.

Slightly off topic.. I have comcrap for high speed internet but not cable. When I plug the cable line into my HDTV’s QAM tuner, it finds about 40 DTV channels but does not display anything on those channels...ranging b/w 2-1... up to 40-2. Anyone familiar with Comcast's open channels?

Most Comcast plants in this region have NO clear channels any longer. I can verify this in several places around the area but not sure where you are. They had to do this to prevent people from doing what you are trying to do.

Not sure what your scan is picking up, but it is likely AVC/mpeg4, which your TV doesn't expect (Comcast has reformatted most of their lineup to AVC, and even if your TV can play this format with some of its other "smart features", it likely isn't built to process mpeg4 coming with anything tuned on the RF/Cable port)

WTXF has two RF 42 antennas on the same tower. One definitely does not serve your direction, while the other does. But I am clueless as to which antenna they use or why they have two. You can check it out at rabbitears.info.

I just found out Decades will be replaced by StartTV on channel 3.2 today. I already see StartTV program listings in the OTA guide data on 3.2 but they are still airing Decades programs.

According to the "Where to Watch" listing on the Decades website they will be moving to WDPN 2.5. I never heard of WDPN before.

KJWP just changed their call sign yesterday to WDPN, so I'm sure all the web info will take a while to catch up.

I noticed after a re-scan last week that WPSG has finally added two subs- "Charge!" on 57.2 (most recently airing on 51.2) and Comet on 57.3 which is still airing on WPHL's 17.4. Could that be ending sometime in the near future?

I didn't change anything but RF 42 (29.1) now is back to the strength it used to be. I did have trouble during a rain storm but my antenna is in my attic 10 miles west of Kennett Square so I can't complain (too much).
