I'm northwest of Gurnee and I've been having problems getting stations for weeks. For the previous 4 years I've gotten pretty good reception of both Chicago and Milwaukee stations with 1byOne antenna from Amazon.

Now I can only get Fox 32. Has something changed with all the other stations? Could it be something else? Any ideas? TIA

Given all of the rain you had, it sounds like water got into your coax somewhere. That would do it...unless it is indoors. Then, maybe, 5G or Wifi interference?

We're all going through FCC reallocation of frequencies. There's stations at lower powers, different channels, and just plain off air while changes are made. Bear with the market as things change. It's painful for everyone including us Broadcasters.......

We're in the middle of FCC repack. We're at a lower power while we and everyone else is moving around. From what I hear, we should be back up to blowtorch strength in Mid October.

Penn & Teller is native 2.0 in a 5.1 environment. Your tuner lights up 5.1 because we are Broadcast flagged as 5.1. We do not matrix our audio and pass it along as native as possible. You'll run into shows like this from time to time.

UPDATE - I bought a new antenna today - a "frame" (?) type antenna that has to be assembled. Brand is RCA, model ANT705E, box said 70 mile range. I hooked it up to my tivo and all of sudden I'm getting channels again. I need to use an indoor antenna so this may just end up on top of my bookcase as "modern art" :-)

So either I'm dealing with the changing of frequencies or the amplifier on my prior (indoor) antenna stopped working.

Troubleshoot antenna or cabling?

I could really use some advice.

I live 20 miles due west of downtown Chicago. I paid to have an antenna installed on my roof. It is an RCA yagi type ANT751R. It worked beautifully all winter and spring. Then sometime in May it went to crap. I lost a lot of channels specifically NBC 5 (virtual) and the 26 group and weakened 22 group. I have been to the roof 2 dozen times, I checked undid and visually checked all the cable and unions (there are several it is a fairly long cable run ~75 feet). I swapped out several unions, rinsed the coax ends with isopropanol, rotated the antenna slightly, rescanned several times, and finally tried a preamp. None of which made any difference in fact the preamp may have made things a bit worse.

I am unsure if I need to recable, pitch the antenna, or if it is perhaps that the trees have leaves/other environmental issue that are blocking the signal.

I am very frustrated as the new shows are coming on.

Did the loss of channels correlate to the leafing out of trees that the antenna is now looking through that were leafless up until May? Vegetation is can wreak havoc on DTV reception.

Are you sure it is a problem with your antenna? We are in the middle of the multiyear FCC repack, many stations have gone off air and many more have to move to different RF channels. Due to technical problems some are transmitting at reduced power. Chicago is Phase 6 so you are in the middle of the transition, scheduled to end mid-Oct. Have you rescanned your TVs recently?

Here is the Chicago repack info from the RabbitEars site:

I've rescanned several times. NBC, the biggest problem I'm having, is scheduled to change frequencies in a few weeks on October 18th so that could help. I decided to buy a Clearstream 4V and swap the yagi out for it. I am currently getting it but it is unwatchable the signal is so weak. It freezes and pixelates frequently sometimes it goes out completely. It's weird CBS 2 (VHF 12) is usually the weakest of the major channels in the area but I am not having any issues with it.

I put on a flat box and dipole indoor antenna and have about the same signal as with the rooftop with NBC 5. It varies from unwatchable to occasionally freezing and pixelating.

Welcome to the repack. Many stations are broadcasting on auxiliary facilities, which means reduced power, lower antenna heights, and less than favorable antenna patterns.

I swapped out the Yagi with a Clearstream 4V and it is blowing the old antenna out of the water. Strong signal on NBC and all the channels I was having issues with (except 26 (26.4) series but it is duplicated by the 23 series).

Anyone putting up anything new/special for the 18th? I just noticed one of my neighbors at the top of the hill has a nice VHF-lo or FM antenna antenna stacked above a smallish parabolic UHF antenna. I'll have to ask him how it's working for him!

This guy has an interesting solution to wanting both VHF and UHF antennas and low-noise preamps on one line. Might be worth considering. Depends on how much I really want WOCH-CD and the mess of VHF channels (in addition to WBBM-DT 12) that'll be there on the 18th after the phase 6 repack.

https://www.aerialsandtv.com/gaincurves.html#Agroups With the repack fast approaching, all the UHF channels will be stuffed into the UHF band from Channel 14 to Channel 36 (470 MHz through 608MHz). Since we don't need an antenna (and with LTE, probably don't want an antenna that still picks up 600MHz+) that covers Channel 14 to 51 or 14 to 69 like in the olden days or 14 to 83 like in the really olden days, I would have guessed that there would be more antennas cut for the new UHF band. The only ones I've found so far are the Group A antennas out of the UK. Maybe they will show up soon!

Have the stations announced the times in which they'll switch channels next Friday (10/18)? I'm aware WFLD/WPWR announced they'll switch at 2am. But will all of them switch in the morning or will it be at different times?

According to that newscaststudio.com article mentioned above, all channels will flip over at 2am.

Update: Looks like WTTW is switching over at midnight on October 15?!

https://interactive.wttw.com/playlis...can-october-18 Looks like WTTW updated this page, saying they are changing on the 15th, and also that they will be down for like 3 hours that night starting at midnight.
That would push W25DW-D off the air. Will W25DW-D move to sharing with WESV-LD on RF Channel 40, or wait until the 18th when they will share on RF Channel 31 post-repack? I'll have to check if they're sharing already, RF40 is a bit of a reach out here.
Edit: Just scanned RF40. Still just EstrellaTV on a single sub-channel.

Why would WTTW decide to switch on the 15th instead of the 18th like the rest of the Chicagoland stations?

There has been a strong media campaign on all the other local stations to inform the OTA receiving community that a rescan was necessary on October 18th. Having all of the local stations “on the same page” date-wise just seemed to make sense.

Having to rescan all of our OTA DVRs, set top converter boxes, and digital-ready TVs more than once for this repack seems like a unnecessary PITA.

I've heard that WTTW's channel 47 transmitter is at death's door and they don't think it will last until 10/18.

Subchannels maybe, but you will have to re-scan anyhow as some of the existing stations will be on different frequencies and your TV will not detect that change.

Newer is not always better.

FWIW: WLS is moving to 22 on 10/18, which is WRJK-LP's channel. WRJK carries a lot of ethnic and "oldies" TV channels, and from the FCC database, they have filed for a displacement frequency of channel 11. But at 400 watts, how far will that go?

WRJK-LP holds a displacement permit to move to channel 11.

Wait...I told it to search for only channel 22! D'oh. Never mind.

400 watts? How far is that signal going to go? About a stone's throw? They could go 3 kw, and they could go to channel 9 and get a better pattern, I would think...
