That's cool. I tried to sync up the HD stream on my phone and was able to compare for a bit but not that impressive like I said. Still an awesome movie though, one of my favorites for sure.

I would agree with this, is it a “knock your socks off” transfer? No, but a worthy upgrade and damn if it’s not the best it’s looked. Its a subtle grading, so it won’t be used to demo your system off, but it’s far from disappointing (IMO).

Netflix added season one of Control Z, a Mexican teen melodrama. And season one of Sweet Magnolias (earlier this week), a family drama.

Apple+ added a quarantine episode of Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet.

Disney+ has a new Pixar SparkShort called Out.

Lightbulb MMFR Smoke Flare (red or orange?)

Some people dislike the fire, but I think this is one of the few movies that actually portray fire in a fairly realistic way. Fire in real life is mostly very bright and very saturated reds and oranges, but we're used to seeing it crushed down to desaturated yellows and whites in the core at a luminance not much brighter than the rest of the scene, so it can of course feel weird to see it portrayed more realistically.

The way it's usually portrayed is usually due to limitations either on camera exposure or artificial limits on the HDR color grade intensity. But Fury Road is one of the few movies that handles it correctly imo. I think The Greatest Showman was another, and Batman v Superman during the nightmare scene too. I think there are some others but I can't think of any right now.

Be sure to ask him whether the smoke flare at 0:18:10 is red or Orange

Turns out he didn't do the HDR grade

I'm really surprised because whoever did the HDR, did it right, and that often requires making sure you grade it for HDR first. I'm glad that he did mention that he is fully in support of grading HDR first and then going back to do the cinema/SDR grades after that. Because far too many filmmakers are doing it backwards. Fury Road coming out the way it did even though they did the SDR grade first is just absolutely incredible. He did mention how they made sure not to clip any highlights while they were working, which is absolutely an important step if the HDR grade comes later.

Maybe that explains Netflix decision to request all content be shot in HDR. Its really evident in Hollywood, where outside shots are stunning. Inside shots are just as stunning.

It was really interesting to hear the request Directors and DP's make, then for him to just adjust contrast and they are happy.

Netflix Originals are mastered, packaged, and delivered in the Dolby Vision format. From this package, we derive Dolby Vision, HDR10, and SDR streams for Netflix customers to enjoy.

I think it’s a good requirement and although Roberto conceded that the new rule could benefit the viewing experience for TV viewers, the topic was a bit of a sore subject among some cinematographers at the time - https://www.imago.org/index.php/news...amerimage.html

I’ve been watching atv+titles since inception and have never seen anything like that. What tv and motion settings? What atv settings?

Just finished the ITunes version of Top Gun. It won’t knock your socks off, but is the best the movie has looked. Improvements in color and image quality. I especially noticed the more “nuanced” appearances of the aircraft “sunset” scenes where there appears to be a much better control/leveling of the sky shot. This wasn’t a critical viewing, so I wasn’t looking for some of the “issues” seen elsewhere.

That's the same way I felt about the 4k HDR version of "War of the Worlds (2005)". I didn't think it looked great but the night time scenes looked better than they ever looked because of HDR. I also saw "Groundhog Day" for the first time in 4k HDR and thought that one looked a lot better and it's an older movie. It may also might be because "War of the Worlds" also has more grain and I'm not a big fan of grain.
