LIONSGATE AND DOLBY VISION SIGN DEAL

My bad, I didn't realize you posted a different article from the one I was about to post. This one is much more detailed.

The obvious choice would be with the VUDU streaming service. Like Warner Brothers is doing with their titles on VUDU.

Just wondering on the first page list why there are so many "Non" HDR titles listed.

for instance many of the Amazon Prime list is Ultra HD but not HDR (specifically Sneaky Pete, which I just recently noticed)

Philips BDP7501 UHD Blu Ray player

That's not correct.

Although for some strange reason the movies on the UHD Video Pack are now throwing the backlight to 20 and the contrast to 100 these movies are not HDR. The Video Packs were released over 2 years ago before movies were being encoded with WCG and HDR metadata.

This has been addressed on the SEK thread at least a couple of times and was addressed again by @ray0414 on this thread yesterday. In case you missed it...

It's got to be Vudu. I don't think DV on Blu-ray is going to happen this year. Also, the Businesswire press release you linked mentions a carefully-worded ecosystem "including A-list Hollywood directors, executives at major studios, OTT service providers, TV and audio device manufacturers, and operators worldwide." [Bold emphasis is mine.] OTT service providers, of which Vudu is an example, and one that already offers Dolby Vision titles. Conspicuously absent from the ecosystem: video disc manufacturers.

The 2016 Vizio TVs were the first to access Vudu's Dolby Vision library, and I believe just this week the LG OLEDs gained access, too. And now this press release issued today. I don't think this is a coincidence. It seems like momentum might be gaining on that front.

If Vudu is involved, this is welcome news; the current library of 35 Warner titles is pretty underwhelming...

The Movies on the UHD Video Packs Are Not HDR

Owners of Samsung TVs across various AVS Threads are reporting that when playing movies off the UHD Video Packs it is maxing out their backlight and contrast and are concluding that that must mean they are HDR.

Overview

The first UHD Video Pack (CY-SUC10SH) was produced in early 2014 and included 5 movies as follows plus 3 documentaries...

  • G.I. Joe: Retaliation
  • World War Z
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • Night at the Museum
  • The Counselor
A second UHD Video Pack (CY-SUC10SH1) followed shortly afterwards hitting the street around August 2014 which contained the following 10 movies plus 30 documentaries...

  • G.I Joe: Retaliation
  • World War Z
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • Night at the Museum
  • The Counselor
  • Life of Pi
  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Forrest Gump
  • The Book Thief
Rumours

Although it was rumoured that Samsung was undertaking to roll out "the world’s very first readily available HDR material, as part of a new UHD Video Pack... as early as June 2015" to show off the capabilities of it's new 2015 SUHD JS televisions it never came to fruition and the only thing we ever saw were the Life of Pi and Exodus HDR clips available for download.

Synopsis

As previously noted these UHD Video Packs were produced long before the studios ever began encoding movies with HDR metadata and only 3 of the above titles have ever been encoded with WCG + HDR but not until 2016 so obviously an apparent glitch that is causing the Samsung TV's to be maxing out the backlight and contrast when playing movies from the UHD Video Packs.

The Biggest Reason of All

If these movies on the UHD Video Packs were in fact HDR I can assure you that @ray0414 would have them listed here and let people know that they can snag all 10 movies for as little as $99 bucks!!

Yes anything from Warner Brothers can be redeemed on Vudu for the UHD digital copy.

This includes but is not limited to mad max, San Andreas, Lego movie.

And yesterday I found a way to redeem my Canadian UV codes for San Andreas and The Lego movie for the UHD versions on Vudu. If I had it over again I would have never ordered the titles from Amazon Canada. At least the two Warner Titles worked out by being able to redeem on Fandango with some Chrome app making it look like I was in Canada. But no luck with the five Sony titles I purchased from Canada.

They can reach a higher bitrate.

50 GB discs can reach up to 82 Mb/s.
66 GB discs can reach up to 108 Mb/s.
And 100 GB discs can reach up to 128 Mb/s.

I've attempted to pull in the list from the first post into Google Docs. I've intentionally locked the spreadsheet from public edits, until I'm comfortable with the format.

What would the higher bitrate between the blu Ray discs translate into for real world noticeable differences to the viewer?
Would anyone benefit or notice the difference between 80-120 bit per sec diff?? Or is it just specs without much perceived improvements?

What do I think?

As a 14 year member of AVS Forum I am sure you know how to use the Private Message feature and am surprised you wouldn't have taken this up with @ray0414 prior to posting this to see what he thinks.

I think @ray0414 is doing an awesome job with the first post and, with a little help from his friends and inside sources, keeping subscribers abreast of all things related to HDR Content on a day-to-day basis so I am kind of curious why a guy who hasn't posted on AVS Forum since 2011 has decided to created a spreadsheet of HDR Content that also includes a highly controversial spreadsheet of what Scott Wilkinson considers HDR Capable Displays that has absolutely zero business being a part of this thread started by @ray0414 to discuss HDR Content -- NOT Displays!!

But since you brought it up, let's just say that Scott's list is incomplete since he ultimately decided to leave the Samsung HU series off his list because they are no longer readily available in the marketplace even though Samsung has explained that with the addition of the SEK-3500 Evo Kit they are in fact capable of HDR.

For those who care to read more or discuss this topic further they can visit the following threads and fill their boots...

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/286-la...-displays.html

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-hi...bit-depth.html

If you want to maintain a spreadsheet like this for your own personal use by all means be my guest.

On the other hand, if @ray0414 supports maintaining the list of HDR Content in this format I actually do like the layout of the Contents tab so if I was to offer a couple of suggestions then here they are:

  1. Remove the Devices tab for the above noted reasons
  2. Move the Update History to the last tab so the Content tab is the first thing you see when you open the file

But what's @ray0414 's assurance that a guy who hasn't posted here in such a long time won't pack it up for another 5 year hiatus like this spreadsheet that you used to maintain that now points to a dead link...

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-rec...l#post20909732

Hey, but that's just my 2 cents.

Thanks for this; I was contemplating picking this one up but hadn't heard much about the UHD disk.

I got this Wednesday. It looks pretty sick with vibrant colors everywhere. Shot in 6k but DI is 2k, upscaled very affective but not perfect. Same company that made kingsman so it looks similar but has more pop and depth and less grain and a,little sharper at times. Super clean looking. Good story based on a real person.

According to the preorder on amazon, it looks like "angry birds" 4k BD will also include the 3d version. Making it the 1st US 4k movie to include it(not including documentaries). Japan has been including 3d in some of their current movies too.

What I have read, bitrate would affect detail across the entire image. Close ups to full scene shots. You may notice this with streamed content compared to some demos available for download in this thread and obviously blu-ray. And the image clarity or crispness.

I think I'm addicted as well. I ended up returning Into Darkness to Walmart and buying it along with Independence Day from B&N with the 20% off just last night because it was the end of the promo.

Aren't all these manufacturer's who dropped 3D this year, going to look silly, especially in 2017 when supposedly the new Avatar is to come out? (I Wonder if the lack of 3D is one of the reasons sales are down?) Don't use it much, but for some movies, I'm glad it's available.

I don't think 3D is a big deal at all.

Does anyone know why the Star Trek uhd movies are hard to locate? None of the Best Buy stores within 250 miles have it and no Wal Mart in the area has it either. I won't pay $50 through Amazon either. What's up with that? This is the first time I have had trouble finding a new movie locally.
