The digital cameras were minimally used. The majority of the film was shot on 35mm and scanned at 2k, with fx rendered at 2k. About a half hour was shot on Imax 65mm and scanned at 8k, with fx rendered at 4k. Then the whole thing was slapped together in a 4k DI. So technically, all the Imax scenes are "true" 4k.

Besides the train one, Shout Factory has a few more Imax nature docs, butterflies, whales, etc... Universal released a couple of Imax collections, although they lack HDR. But the real reference will be the upcoming Planet Earth II. It was just confirmed for UBD, although no date yet.

Yep, the banding at 1:31:00 in Miss Peregrine's is in the source; I set the Oppo to 4k/24p 10bit, 4:2:0 (which automatically gets sent as a more "legal" 4k/24p 10bit, 4:2:2), and the scene looks the same.

I'm just concurring with what everyone else said. This disc is reference quality. This from the HDR10 disc. Will watch the Dolby version tomorrow. Love love love pristine sharp as a tac picture quality. Other movie makers need to take notes!!!

In my opinion, once I got past the first 20 or so minutes of the movie, it started getting interesting and by the end of the movie I really enjoyed it. It is definitely something that I will watch again. Here is the link to the review I read:

I think renting it first is a good idea.

I'm still with a 1080p tv, but I got the UHD version of Sully and also have an Oppo UDP-203. I'll likely have to wait until my tax refund to get an UHD tv set. My AVR HDMI just died, so I'm going direct 203>TV set at present.

I think the OA, issue is improper use of nits and black levels or the metadata is missing instructions for controlling dynamic range.

A actual EOTF calibration seems to clear up some of the noise.

I get that some cling to the disc format, and with regular HD content I certainly preferred BD over streaming, but there's no reason to blindly support the clearly inferior format at the moment.
I agree with you. There is no convincing me that a 2k upscale to 4k uhd bluray is superior to streamed native 4k.

The IMAX scenes from Star Trek 2 on 4k disc is 2k upscale and beats anything streaming I've ever seen from Netflix or Amazon.

I can name off a few more 2k upscales that I like over streaming, but im more referring to 4k discs from true 4k sources (not upscales)

Bright highlights, clean picture a la studio DNR and what not are not what i am talking about here. The unprocessed display of native 4k is much more faithful to detail and picture fidelity than any upscale will ever be

Has anyone seen Exodus on UHD BD? If so, what were your thoughts? I saw a 4K HDR trailer on YouTube in one of the playlists on The HDR Channel and it was stunning. However, from reviews I've read, it's not among the best UHD BD - certainly not on the level of The Revenant or Pacific Rim. The trailer looked more impressive than either movie, however.

So what's the explanation for the 4K HDR trailer of that movie looking better than both The Revenant and Pacific Rim do on UHD BD?

If that's the case, something is wrong. They aren't even close. I've watched probably 75 discs and it's one of the worst. The two you mention typically fall in most people's top 5. Exodus is never mentioned in the top 20.

Feel free to view it for yourself. Hopefully you've got a device capable of playing HDR videos on YouTube. Have you seen anything on UHD BD that matches this PQ?

My display is the Samsung KS8000. There's no issue with the display. It can play HDR content without any issues and the vast majority of it looks phenomenal.

I'm watching it on my TV's YouTube app (the TV supports HDR on YouTube.)

I'm also using the same blu ray player as you. I find that UHD BD are a definite improvement over 1080p BD, but not as stunning as some of the streaming content. The only scene I've seen so far that I've found truly stunning was the part in Chapter 18 of The Revenant where Glass emerges from the shelter the individual who helped heal him constructed from him. Otherwise, it's mostly just subtle improvements over 1080p BD.

The Exodus HDR trailer, on the other hand, looks incredible in every scene.

Ha anyone tried Hulu 4k yet? The idea of some of the old Bond movies in 4k sounds cool...but are they in HDR wcg/ thats the real question

Got Sully, Miss Peregrines and Oblivion on uhd blu ray tonight( early xmas gifts!)Cant wait for video perfection that is Sully! And as long as oblivion has great colors, it'll be an upgrade to the 1080p version to me, which I never bought so this is perfect!

Also, I really prefer discs to streaming, and aside from the Grand Tour and chef table france, nothing is close to as good as the shallows or Great Gatsby or Pacific rim imo( some streaming is very good, though sense8 i think is better then most HDR stuff on netflix! Looking at you Hibana Spark)...Im very happy hearing about great early adoption for the uhd disc format, but I wonder if its a lot of people with a few discs or a few people like me, buying a lot of discs...Im more impressed then the laser disc launch and hd dvd/blu ray launch with this uhd stuff/

Whatever you're spewing isn't making sense to me. The hdr content on amazon IS dnr'd.

Of course native 4k is great, but not if it's BIT STARVED. A compressed/ bit starved 4k file actually brings it down closer to the level of a great 1080p blu ray. Netflix and amazon have very low bit rates, while youtube has almost 2-4x higher bitrates. I've been watching more and more YTHDR and it's closer to 4k blu ray than any other streaming site, though it's mainly just Documentaries and homemade 4k stuff.

Actually, 4k/24p 10bit 4:2:2 is not supported by HDMI2.0a. So it's not "legal" at all, if it's trying to use that mode!

Valid modes for 4K24 are:
4K24 8bit RGB (no HDR possible)
4K24 8bit 4:4:4 (no HDR possible)
4K24 10bit RGB
4K24 10bit 4:4:4
4K24 12bit RGB
4K24 12bit 4:4:4
4K24 12bit 4:2:2

Well I defintely don't agree with that, I thought the trailer looked terrible and the use of HDR was in poor taste.

Sully

Watched Sully 4k UHD disk last night. Picture & Audio quality is great. I recommend this disk to anyone that wants to show off their TV. Very crisp resolution & good use of HDR.
