Netflix was certainly pleased with the results since they quickly green lit a sequel to Bright

Even the crappy Adam Sandler movies are supposed to be the most streamed movies worldwide on Netflix.
I think those results are because of the number of Netflix subscribers and not because the movie was any good. People are going to stream the movie out of curiosity. I even have it in my queue.

Yep - Bright lasted about 10 minutes for me. Just dumb. Bummer since it looks so good.

I liked the movie Bright. I would not have paid to see it in the theater, but it would have been a rental for me. And with Netflix it was no additional cost. I am looking forward to the sequel.

I didn't mind it. I liked the fantasy/action/thriller/comedy combination.
Good movie to turn of your brain and just be entertained.

The themes and characters were never fleshed out. I had a problem with the Elf who was a fed but no story to him, no story behind the inferni, no story behind the brights and how they are found, no story behind the dark lord and the back story of the orcs was touched on and never explored. The segregation of the races was only touched on in passing. All in all Bright had some potential as far as the sci-fi goes but was not realized.

Finally got around to checking out the 4K BD copy of Transformers: Age of Extinction. I was extremely disappointed to see that the IMAX scenes are missing and this is framed just like the regular BD. Talk about a lost opportunity. The IMAX scenes look stunning on the 3D disc.

I lost all the IMAX scenes with a few titles like "The Dark Knight" trilogy because I went digital only for those and they don't include the IMAX scenes. I've given away the BD discs so now friends and family are enjoying IMAX.

Not sure how they made the IMAX scenes work in The Last Knight on iTunes. I wonder what they did differently.

That's a bummer; I double-dipped on this one, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I demo the 3D version quite a bit, and was hoping to replace it with the UHD; guess I'll be keeping both

Seriously only 10 minutes? How many movies actually show you anything in the 1st 10 minutes? I admit the 1st 20 minutes I didn't pay much attention, it was basically just background noise for me but I paid attention once the cops made their discovery in the ghetto.

That's easy! 2001: A Space Odyssey. And I believe that one of the most critically acclaimed cuts in cinematic history is within the first ten minutes, as well. You got quality from this director

Blade Runner 2049 saga continues.

The new word is that some foreign releases of the 4k BD have Dolby Vision listed on the back of the box but the disc itself does NOT have Dolby Vision. Might be a misprint botch job by Sony in those other countries on those cases. Ouch.

Just finished watching IT (2017) and the picture was most excellent as was the Atmos audio. I think the TV mini series was done better but that aside I'd recommend giving it a watch.

Got Inception and watched it tonight (thanks @korsjs for selling me their copy). I would say it was a noticeable improvement, but not night and day from the standard Blu-ray. I'd say it was a better improvement than Batman Begins was, though (haven't watched any other Nolan 4K movies yet). I did notice some of what reviewers had been noting on the overly warm or "burnt" looking skin tones, but it was only in some shots, and not bad enough to ruin the look of the movie for me. Overall I would say the good outweigh the bad here, and as a big fan of the movie I am glad I got this (also glad I didn't pay full price), but for most people I don't think there's quite enough improvement for it to justify double dipping if you already own the Blu-ray, unless you're as obsessed with this movie as I am, lol.

Redbox to Roll-Out 4K Rentals

Quote:
At the Digital Entertainment Group’s (DEG) CES party last evening, redbox announced it would begin a rollout of UltraHD Blu-ray disc rentals starting in some test markets. There was no mention of which markets would be selected – or how many of them would be included – just that the UltraHD trial would begin in markets that already show a strong interest in Blu-ray disc rental.

This is huge news for 4K movie lovers, as there has yet been a way to enjoy 4K movies without buying them. And we all know there are plenty of movies you’d love to see…once. When asked about price one representative told me that hadn’t been finalized but that she expected it to command a slight premium over current Blu-ray rentals, which currently cost $2.00, estimating around $2.50 - $3.00 per rental.

Yeah, I didn't get excited about this since I live in a small market where even Walmart doesn't have the BD sale bins anymore due to lack of interest. Most of the people in my area are still only using DVDs, much less 4k BDs.

That's true for the entire disc market. The overall disc market is still shrinking. But DVD sales still beat BD sales.

That's how game rentals started so no big deal there. Should be available to everyone else after a while.

Alright, checked out both The Fifth Element and E.T. on iTunes. It was far more of an adventure than I was expecting. I decided to start with E.T. That was a mistake. For some reason when playing back E.T. my Apple remote stops working and if I hold the menu button it exits, but the movie keeps playing in the background at the home menu. I can't choose chapter stops, I can't pause it, I can't even bring up the drop down menu during playback. I tried restarting my AppleTV and then pulled the power for a third attempt. Every time the movie plays my AppleTV goes bananas. I really don't know what to say about that, but I did let the movie play from the beginning for a bit to check out the picture. Remember, I couldn't fast forward or do much of anything so I really only sat their long enough to watch about 10 minutes worth before shutting it off. First impression was that the HDR itself is just OK. What stood out were the compression artifacts. The grain was causing the image to swim a bit due to the heavy compression of the stream with that much grain/noise. I popped in my 4K BD and the image does not exhibit any of that nonsense. Overall it is a decent image, but it isn't going to blow your mind. It is a reasonably nice step up from the old bluray though.

The Fifth Element played just fine thankfully. I would say the image is very similar to the 4K BD and the application of HDR is natural (so some pop, but not going to set your hair on fire). The overall image is pretty grainy, but to be expected for being shot on film. I do know Sony did a true 4K remaster (DI) of the film a couple of years ago and this is most likely the best the film will look. This one I would feel comfortable buying on iTunes as long as you are OK with the loss of the Dolby Atmos track from the 4K BD that is surprisingly good.

I finally watched the Terminator 2 UHD BD. I definitely liked it. It was easily the best looking Terminator 2 I've owned. And I think this was a quintuple dip for me.
