I can't choose chapter stops, I can't pause it, I can't even bring up the drop down menu during playback. I tried restarting my AppleTV and then pulled the power for a third attempt. Every time the movie plays my AppleTV goes bananas. I really don't know what to say about that, but I did let the movie play from the beginning for a bit to check out the picture. Remember, I couldn't fast forward or do much of anything so I really only sat their long enough to watch about 10 minutes worth before shutting it off. First impression was that the HDR itself is just OK. What stood out were the compression artifacts. The grain was causing the image to swim a bit due to the heavy compression of the stream with that much grain/noise. I popped in my 4K BD and the image does not exhibit any of that nonsense. Overall it is a decent image, but it isn't going to blow your mind. It is a reasonably nice step up from the old bluray though.

The Fifth Element played just fine thankfully. I would say the image is very similar to the 4K BD and the application of HDR is natural (so some pop, but not going to set your hair on fire). The overall image is pretty grainy, but to be expected for being shot on film. I do know Sony did a true 4K remaster (DI) of the film a couple of years ago and this is most likely the best the film will look. This one I would feel comfortable buying on iTunes as long as you are OK with the loss of the Dolby Atmos track from the 4K BD that is surprisingly good.

Thanks for this. You saved me a few dollars on E.T. I’ll stick to the HD blu-ray I have of it. But I will purchase The Fifth Element on iTunes.

Thanks again for the help!

@Balthazar2k4 You should ask Apple for a refund for E.T. What this movie is doing to your ATV is unacceptable.

As flaky and sensitive to scratches as UHD discs/players are, it’ll be interesting to see the rental thing play out..

Now Netflix needs a 4K UHD disc plan.

It was a code redemption when I picked up the 4K BD. Not exactly refundable.

I thought it was just me. That's exactly how ET plays on my Apple TV as well. There must be something wrong with their version of the movie. This was also a redemption for me. I watched the 4K disc instead, but it would be nice if the streaming version worked properly.

NBC to Distribute Olympics in 4K High Dynamic Range

No real details yet about where and how to watch it in HDR. Hopefully it has better distribution support than the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Oh I know - and I'm not getting my hopes to high up. But it would be a great solution for those of us who would like to just rent a disc.

Would be nice if my area (Charlotte metro) was one of them. I used to use Redbox a lot until it became just as inexpensive to rent movies through streaming services.

Maybe a incoming update to Hulu to support HLG, with satellite feed through Directv as well. Streaming HLG on YouTube is real possibility as well.

I don't know what streaming services you're referring to but it usually costs more than $2.00 which is what Redbox charges for a blu-ray rental.

Passengers 3D or 4K ?

After watching the 4K HDR version first a couple of days ago, and today the 3D - 3D wins hands down!

Now if only they could get a 4K, 3D, HDR version, we'd be all set, but that will never happen!

Awesome development on the Redbox thing. That's a pretty big game changer for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if that absolutely changes the market for UHD discs. One of the biggest obstacles is the expense of content, and even a cursory review of the options would discourage someone who is casually interested in it. Most people don't buy hundreds of movies at $30 a pop.

For all the people with non-DV HDR sets, streaming rentals just started coming available with the Apple TV (at a pretty price point) and Vudu's HDR10 adoption (with limited compatible app platforms). And it's still $6/rental (very recently down from what, $9.99?) vs. a $2 blu ray at Redbox. Plus it forces people to jump into streaming and devices who simply aren't all that interested in the swirl of that market.

I'm sure there are a ton of people that look into this "4K HDR" thing, and realize that they aren't into the financial/research investment in content.

But when these things start showing up in Redbox kiosks...and all they need to do is drop $150 on a new blu-ray player? That makes it both financially accessible, and straightforward to set up. I think that has the potential to really mainstream the market. After all, there are a ton of people with 4K, and more and more HDR, TVs that know they aren't using them.

It's not going to make DVD users jump, but people that have moved onto blu ray long ago...I could see a big burst in interest when these show up on Redbox. In fact, if I had an financial stake in UHD content, I would have thought about subsidizing this move by Redbox a long time ago.

3D had more depth, and was more realistic looking. The whole movie was bright enough that it didn't really need HDR.
Now, having said that, will now have to go back and re-watch the 4K version again. Glad I enjoyed the movie enough to want to watch it 3 times !
Wife prefers 3D, and so will probably watch it this weekend - weak point, female actress - yipes!

Delayed and only up to four events a day, plus limited distribution options. Unless the delay is still live with what's on TV, I'm not sure if I'm interested. I don't mean to be cynical, but based on NBC's past Olympic streaming options, I'm not hopeful.

Amazon just added a new show called "Electric Dreams" in HDR. Looks like it has great HDR potential because it takes place in the future with some good futuristic scenery. Also looks to have a nice cast of stars too. Terrance Howard, Steve Buscemi, Bryan Cranston (breaking bad).

This is a sony production and was shot using the red dragon in 8k.

Edit: just flicked it on real quick and yep this looks pretty cool PQ wise! I'd say it's probably pretty similar to Bladerunner 2049 with the outdoor neons and lights and flying cars.

I just watched "It" 2017 tonight on Vudu and was highly impressed. The sound (Atmos) as well as video was excellent throughout. Vudu is advertising this one as Dolby Vision but I only got HDR-10 but didn't mind at all as it was so good. The 2:15 run time went by so fast because I was enjoying it so much. It reminded me of "Stranger Things" and even one of the actors from that one appeared on this one. Highly recommended and I agree with the rating here:

I'm noticing that on Vudu, some movies (only ones I've noticed are those that are available in UHD) are also showing DV and HDR10 listed for the HDX.

For example, my copy of Sully shows...
UHD: 4k, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos
HDX: Up to 1080p, HDR10, Dolby Vision, DD Plus

Think that's just a typo??
