I didn't know they retroactively made Chef's Table S1 and 2 with DV/HDR10 on Netflix. I thought S3 debuted with HDR, but left the other two seasons alone at first. Am I wrong?

BTW, T2: Judgement Day is 4K HDR on iTunes.

No idea but I really only skimmed through some of the episodes because I am really not interested in the show.

Just watched Bright. Thought the highlights looked great but the shadows were ugly a lot of the time with really raised black levels, although it was inconsistent. Was watching in DV on my TV's app, so it shouldn't be the common DV problem that, as far as I understand, only exists for DV content on external devices.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part, but there were some boring parts.

Rented BRAVEHEART on Fandangonow. Let's just hope this 4k is not the one that eventually comes to the 4k disc!

It wasn't terrible, it was a minor upgrade in sharpness and HDR, very minor, it also had some very weird grain?

I know Dunkirk, Interstellar and Inception are mastered at 4000, but Dunkirk only has a MaxCLL of around 300 nits I believe, with the other two of just over 1000, so just because the mastering display was 4000 nits, it doesn't mean the movie makes use of that.

Just finished watching Pacific Rim last in 4K HDR. What a STUNNING looking movie! Is that mastered in 1000 or 4000 nits? My TCL P only goes up to 700 nits but the PQ just blew me away.

For those in the UK, it looks like Sky may be gearing up for HDR (I'm not sure, but I don't think they are broadcasting any HDR yet). I saw this article interviewing colorists about recent HDR projects, and three of them are for Sky: The Farm, Bounty Hunters, and The Trip to Spain.

My copy of Blue Planet II arrived today. I threw on the first 20 mins and the PQ looks to be a very similar situation to Planet Earth II. That is, it's a mixture of extremely impressive images, and those that look like they were filmed with an iPhone. Obviously, it's all down to cameras used and particular filming conditions so it's to be expected, but there were still a couple of high aerial shots that looked like they were filmed with a GoPro, which is frustrating.

When it's good though, it's really good!

Interesting, and thanks for the link. Sky doesn't broadcast any HDR, even Sky's latest and greatest hardware doesn't even support it, and speaking as a customer who is also member of their beta testing team, they are years and years away. They posted a "timeline" of upcoming features spanning several years, and HDR wasn't even on the chart! Their version of the BBC iPlayer on their hardware doesn't output any form of HDR, so the recent Blue Planet II trial was 4k only, with no HDR.

support list here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/l...-planet-II-uhd - "Sky Q" is SDR only, but that page obfuscates it.

I've been watching Punisher and there were no elevated backs there, and weren't there people complaining about a similar issue with Suicide Squad? Maybe it's just how that director grades his movies.

Really it's a good portion of the scenes in the movie that take place at night (which is most of the movie). Darker scenes with less environmental effects make the raised blacks easier to spot, such as interior scenes including those inside the police car.

Watched the new Blade Runner 2049.
Loved the movie. Hated that I had to keep my fingers on the audio buttons! Up and down, anywhere up to 15 clicks. Have noticed this on other 4K HDR films as well. What's with this audio volume problem?

That's not a problem, that's as designed. Set your audio so that dialogue is at a normal volume, and leave it there. Dialogue will stay consistent throughout. You will get loud music and explosions, as that's intended as part of the dynamics of the sound design. When you increase and decrease the volume, you're reducing the dynamic range of the sound. It would be like if people reduced the luminance of their TV any time a bright scene came on in HDR. It's supposed to be bright, just as the sound is supposed to be loud. Some scenes should be quiet, just as some HDR scenes will be dark.

You can always turn on dynamic range compression on your sound system, but many people would agree you're ruining the sound dynamics.

USA version of Blade Runner 2049 HDR10 metadata reports that it is mastered at 10,000 nits But MaxCLL is only 181.

No issues with the Atmos audio for me. I loved the dynamic range.

No issues with the Atmos audio for me. I loved the dynamic range.
Are there any 10,000 nit mastering displays out there? MaxCLL 181 is barely HDR, wow

Great, if you're home alone. (But I still find some playbacks are still too loud even for myself.)
But, since I do most of my viewing in the evenings, you have a wife issue ! `Do you have to play it so load ?'
(Note when she plays her videos, different story! She gets upset when I tell her to turn it down. I just go hide in the basement.)

Yes, there is a 10000 nits display that Sony just brought out to show at the CES this year. Though, most likley itll be sold only to production houses only for grading and editing etc.
