I just picked up the Annihilation UHD BD today from Best Buy. I used $5 in rewards, so $20 was a decent deal for it. Especially considering it costs $13 to rent it from 3d-blurayrental.

I thought the colors were great, there were some quite sharp shots (along with some soft ones) and the blacks were INKY. Overall thought the movie was pretty good....not sure what to make of the ending.

I noticed that on their page the other day. I’m a relatively new subscriber to 3D-blurayrental and have not seen any other titles renting for that much. It’s disconcerting and I hope not a sign of rising rental costs for uhd.

I think it’s a studio thing never seen a rental that high maybe they want to push sales? I’m passing I’m not a Natalie Portman fan anyway plus I heard it wasn’t good. Those two reasons are enough to pass on eye candy PQ lol

I was digging around for reviews of Game of Thrones Season 1 UHD BD and found this: https://stack.com.au/film-tv/tv-revi...tra-hd-review/

I would take it with a grain of salt as I have never read any of their other reviews, but it sounds reasonably encouraging. Still not sure I am willing to take the plunge at $45 though... I already have the re-release with the Dolby Atmos addition... is the third time the charm?

Very bummed by Martin Liebman's review of Forrest Gump: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Forres...202137/#Review

I had really hoped for better.

I actually enjoyed it. The problem, as I see it, is it’s a bit too cerebral for kids, and doesn’t have much in the way of comedy. It’s really more sci fi than anything. But for adults and kids who aren’t expecting a lot of humor and who read and appreciated the book, it’s an easy recommendation.

Ehh... well it certainly tries to present itself that way but fails spectacularly imo. There's nothing smart about the movie and its missing just about everything that could have made it that way from the book. As an adult, the movie felt like a series of meaningless scenes, connected by very little, that couldn't hold my attention. The acting and characters were bad and ultimately I didn't care what happened to anybody by the end.

The visuals were decent, so maybe it could be fun to watch on UHD for that alone, but the movie was a bore that actually left me feeling mad. I loved the book as a kid and the movie retained very little about what I loved about the book, from what I could remember. It is very rare for me to regret seeing a movie but this movie accomplished that

Yes there have been rentals that high over the 5.5 years I have been using them. The ones that are high like that are harder to get titles. I've typically seen them with hard to get 3D BD titles that are only available from China or Europe. The Annihilation UHD BD is only available from Best Buy until October 29th, 2018. So that is probably why they are pricing it much higher.

Currently I see over half a dozen 3D BD titles priced between $12.99 and $19.99 to rent. They are all only available from Europe or China. And aren't sold in the US.

But for UHD BD titles I only see two that are priced higher than their normal $7.99 price. And Annihilation is one of them.
Paddington 2 is the other UHD BD title. And it is not sold in the US on the UHD BD format.

Has anyone else watched "The Expanse" on Prime? I've started watching a couple of episodes and it seems pretty good except I have to increase the volume by 7 - 10 dB higher than normal when viewing this one.

Found an article on why Solo was so Dark visually in the theatre. I saw it in Real 3D which was disappointing. I like the movie itself. Hopefully the UHD disc is much brighter when it comes out!

I honestly don't know how much I trust that article. Even multiple reviews that saw the movie in Dolby Cinema's complained about it being dark. Has anyone seen a good review in regard to the PQ?

Idk but if you find one let me know! I would like to see it in 2D. I just thought 3D was too dark and it wasn’t very 3D anyway in my opinion.

I don't know why, but for some reason I was thinking it was only going to be sold in a box set. I went back and re-read the article and you are absolutely correct. It looks like they were always going to be sold individually. Related, you can get the entire blu-ray collection for $19 on amazon so now I am just thinking I may do that.

I saw Solo and a Dolby UHD Cinema and standard 4K. The Dolby Cinema image was better but still pretty bad. The Dolby sound was loud and unpleasant, so much so that I will never go to this theater again.

As I already own the entire collection on BD, I can tell you that the first three films aren't going to rock your world either visually or audibly. In fact they are notorious for just how bad they are (MPEG-2 and DD 5.1 (640kbps)). The only reason I am guessing you are thinking about doing it is for the iTunes upgrade. Unfortunately, that still isn't going to solve the audio problem. I am definitely bummed that Paramount didn't see fit to provide Atmos upgrades to all of the films, the lossless tracks should still be a big improvement over what we were given on BD.

Unfortunately, that still isn't going to solve the audio problem. I am definitely bummed that Paramount didn't see fit to provide Atmos upgrades to all of the films, the lossless tracks should still be a big improvement over what we were given on BD.
I'm taking advantage of the iTunes upgrades as much as possible since this can be an expensive hobby if we keep buying the discs over and over when they come out in a higher resolution. I have all 5 in HD on iTunes so will probably just watch the upgraded versions and forget about the discs for these.

Apple just announced Dolby Atmos officially for the AppleTV 4K... that's a potential game changer.

No Disney announcement unfortunately.
