How will those translate to HDR I wonder. Were they done digitally?

Once the 8K comes down to the present 4K prices - what will you buy?

And with 4Ks now down to the price of 1080Ps, we'll replace those units with the now cheaper 4Ks.

2030 - 16K - it's never ending - manufacturers like it when we keep opening our wallets ! (Also for the triple, etc upgrade dippers.)

Honestly I think there is a point where the difference is just not able to be seen at normal distances with the usual TV sizes. Not that there is no difference but the viewer simply can’t tell. People with usual 20/20 vision won’t be able to see any enhanced detail and it becomes just a number. Sure we will buy it because eventually that will be all you can buy.

That's why they do **** like this. People pay. I get it through T-Mobile plus $3 bucks. But I won't give them anymore. Its not the cash, it's the principle.

It's part of the production costs. When they decided to do 4k HDR it was one production cost. Now they are just trying to see how much extra they can squeeze out of it.

I know a guy that knows a guy. The way this stuff works is they test to see how many suckers will pay and if they get a bite then they do it. Hopefully they don't find enough suckers in that pond.

It's the same as it's always been. I've always seen titles priced like that at some time or another. But the prices can fluctuate wildly from day to day. Especially with pre-orders. I know with Amazon and bestBuy they give you the lowest price during the pre-order period. So even though the price could be $42 one day, $25 the next, and $38 the next day. You end up getting it for $25.

Which is the same thing that happens with SD and HD.

I can't count the number of times at work that someone says how great a channel looks in HD from our in house system. Only they are watching the SD channels(Since to view the HD channels requires a special TV with the Decryption capability for our HD channels). And to me it looks like crap. But they think it looks like HD.

Those same arguments were perfectly valid back then. There's a lot of people who have 4KTVs and aren't seeing the full benefit of 4K. Many of those don't have screens big enough to see any difference in resolution compared to 1080p, based on their viewing distance. It absolutely was a valid concern when 4K first came out, and if it weren't for HDR, I suspect 4K wouldn't have been successful quite yet, until larger screen sizes were more common.

That being said, the issue is far less of an issue with 4K than it is with 8K. With 4K all you really need is a screen large enough to tell a difference over 1080p. At 8ft viewing distance, you need approximately 59" to see the full benefit of 1080p, so if you get a 65" you'll be seeing a minimal benefit over 1080p. If you get 75" things might start to become a bit more noticeable. You're still not getting anywhere close to the full benefit of 4K unless you sit much closer, or get a much larger screen (117") but it doesn't take absurd screen sizes to actually see SOME difference at all, like it would with 8K. If you sit 6ft away, you only need larger than 44" to see a difference compared to 1080p. Again, much more reasonable than the bare minimum 88" you'd need at 6ft viewing distance to see any benefit over 4K.

Ready Player One is showing as $42 at bestbuy and $35 on amazon! If you order the disc + UHD from VUDU, it is $29.99. This close to the release, I wouldn't expect anything lower than $35 for the first few weeks. The Matrix was similar, and by time it went on sale it was out of stock everywhere.

It's always been $29.99 at Target and I ordered it on 4/29/18 with 25% off and extra 5% off using the Red card. Hopefully it's not another Matrix fiasco with this one?

Doubtful since it is a new release. I just know a lot of people did not preorder The Matrix because of the price and when it finally dropped it was sold out. Those older titles seem to go quickly.

I got a great deal on the Matrix UHD BD by cancelling my Amazon pre-order and getting it two weeks after release. I got it for around $19 at Best Buy after a $3 price match.

I hope I can do the same thing with Ready Player One.

The BBY exclusive 4K Steelbook of Ready Player One started off at $35. For some strange reason it's now at $42. The Target exclusive lenticular slipcover of RP1 has always been $29. I preordered the BBY Steelbook when it was at $35.

Came across this review on Twitter..

"Dream Big" is a an IMAX documentary narrated by Jeff Bridges that received a "6 out of 5" score for PQ, and also comes with a 3d version. Picture quality is said to be breathtaking. Just ordered this from Amazon because of the review. Scroll down and take a look at the posted screen caps, looks stunning for sure.

This is a preorder and releases July 24th, price is only $23 on Amazon.

Master List of currently available 4k HDR titles, will be updated often.

Cancelled my Amazon order for Ready Player One and went with Vudu UHD + Disc option. Seemed a better deal since I can watch it now and later sell the code that comes with the disc. Anyway...this is the HDR movie you have been waiting for. Seriously...no complaints at all from me.

Not really impressed with the audio. It seems to lack LFE punch. Maybe it’s the DD+ encoding that tones down the dynamic range or something. The video is tops though.

I’ve heard the LFE was really good. I still haven’t watched my digital copy yet. I would be shocked if the disc also came with a digital code on these VUDU combos.

The last couple VUDU Disc + Digital I purchased did come with codes in the disc package.

That’s awesome. Even more of a reason to purchase through VUDU when the disc+digital is an option.

Yeah, I've started doing it more for the reason I get the movie on digital street date and I get the disc for a pretty reasonable price (usually in line with Best Buy or Amazon). Plus, with the addition of the codes and the option to sale them it usually makes the overall package the best deal available.

At my normal listening level of -10dB it was pretty underwhelming in the audio department. Nothing was hard to hear or bad sounding, but the overall level was toned down. Maybe this is how Vudu is on the LG App on my OLED or the way ARC works in my setup. Not sure. I did not try turning the volume up in an attempt to compensate though. Maybe I should have. The disc is a standard retail copy shipped by Walmart (Walmart owns Vudu). Anything that comes with the standard retail packaging will come with it.

edit: After trying a movie I own both on Vudu and Disc with Atmos I found that I need to boost the volume by 5dB on Vudu to achieve the same perceived SPL. In other words for my setup setting the volume to -5dB when watching Vudu via ARC from my TV is about the same level as the BD from my Oppo 203 at -10dB. For whatever reason that may be.

@Balthazar2k4 - For the titles you've purchased UHD Disc + Digital, do I understand that they've come to you with the FULL 4K Retail package, which includes the UHD code, 4K disc and Blu-ray, plus you also get an automatic UHD code activation in your account? So in other words you wind up getting the UHD code automatically through Vudu (without redeeming anything separately), plus the discs, as well as a spare UHD code in the case that I can give to my dad and he'll then have a UHD online through Vudu under his own account (by redeeming the code that comes in the case)?

Also am I correct to assume that the disc part does not ship until release day (but you can watch the online version in UHD in the meantime)?

Thanks!

Correct. If you buy it on Vudu it unlocks in UHD HDR with Atmos immediately and they ship the disc when it releases. They say to expect it by July 29 which is a few days after the movie releases in stores on the 24th. It is the standard retail disc shipped from Walmart since Walmart owns Vudu.
