Definitely not!

Then again, some masochists sit through some real turd movies for stunning picture quality...
One man's turd could be another man's dinner? Wait that came out wrong!! But you get my meaning 😄

If they do I won't buy it - I've seen it and enjoyed it, but it's not something I am eager to watch again The second one is black and white, I think! Think of the highlights!

Can anyone confirm these movies have elevated black, just to make sure there's nothing wrong with my tv settings:

Warcraft
Ghost In The Shell
Phantom Thread
Ready Player One (Dolby Vision)

Ready player one, ghost in the shell, and Warcraft looked fine to me. Ready player one is one of the best quality UHD I’ve seen. There is a difference between the game world and real world though. The real world scenes are very bland on purpose to make it look run down and drab. Maybe you see that?

I'm only asking about the black level. In Warcraft and Ghost In The Shell, during the credits roll, the background is grey instead of black while the black bars remain true black. Some scenes which are supposed to black only fade to very dark grey. As for ready player one, I only notice that in dolby vision version, not hdr10. I'm using lg oled c8.

The last 30-40 minutes was solid, but it definitely started out SLOW besides for the 1st 10 minutes which was a gun shootout. Pretty gruesome and violent towards the end, think John Wick meets The Punisher.

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody. Great movie. Might need to dust my HT. Gotta a little something in my eyes towards the end. The HDR wasn't in your face, but worked well with this and accentuated a nice 4K UHD picture. And what can I say? Those fat bottomed girls, you really do make the rocking world go round.

I can double check Ready Player One when I get home, but I do not specifically remember elevated blacks. Also, to avoid confusion you are using a disc and not streaming correct? If you are streaming elevated blacks and micro blocking can be pretty common.

It could be, but they’d probably make it about as horrible as all the Resident Evil movies.

Also I know some people don't like it but the Assassin's Creed movie was really well made

Dolby didn't put out an official statement or provide this information any media outlets. But, in one of the many white papers they have released. The lifted black issue that affected widescreen bars, wasn't a display or player issue. Colorist were using feature of Dolby Vision and HDR10+ called Lift, Gain, and Gamma. The feature, added to the metadata, after the metadata is automatically generated, affected black level and shadow detail. So, the colorist were making these adjustments and mistakenly extending the shadow detail adjustments to the black bars.

"Lift" sounds like the "brightness" feature on TVs and some video/photo editing software. It is so far outdated, nobody should ever really be using a tool like that anymore for increasing. There's no reason to lift black levels. Use gamma or gain instead if you want to improve shadow detail, and even better, use curves. I can't believe there are still colorists that are stupid enough to use controls like that today, and shame on Dolby for encouraging it. A tool like that should be restricted to lowering/clipping already badly raised black levels. It shouldn't be used for lifting, ever.

SMPTE use the same terminology. I'm just glad they found the cause and a solution.

I do, but I was speaking more from the perspective of color grading, which is a very different process from display calibration. I have experience with both. Black is absolute in the color grading process, and should not be shifted up. It should only be shifted down in circumstances where the source footage has incorrect black levels. Otherwise, gain/gamma/curves should be used, so that absolutely black is preserved.

Interesting, and I had not heard that was the cause. I remember going a little mad with Power Rangers and the campfire scene. The black bars almost looked transparent.

Loved Polar. Audio was pretty good, video was outstanding. It was based on a Graphic novel so that is obviously not everyone's cup of tea but they really delivered. Can't wait for the sequel. Now I am excited to see how Punisher S2 is.

It's a feature in grading software like Davinci Resolve, I believe others as well. Near the end of last year, Dolby released the whitepaper detailing the cause and a solution.

There's more info, like 15 additional trim passes. So when Bumble Bee releases on UHD BluRay, the release would be a lot more closer to the original grade.

Watched 2018 "The Predator". It Was better than I was expecting. It won't win any awards but the HDR was great all the way through. Also it had unexpected humor sprinkled throughout that I also enjoyed. Using the original score throughout was cool too.

Also checked out a few minutes of Velvet Buzzsaw on Netflix and it looks fantastic. Super sharp and colorful. Note this movie has the fancy new Netflix Originals logo/gif at the beginning, it's pretty cool looking.
