We know there is a 4K version of SW and we have had a few rumors of 4K work being done on the 6 previous for release on disc. It wouldn’t surprise me to have them all tied together, but D+ would be the only place to stream them for “free” (included with monthly price). I’m excited to see what they do/offer especially in the case of older films where D+ may make more sense than a UHDBR. It wouldn’t surprise me either if they move to D+ exclusives for some of their movies. It will be interesting to see if they support DolbyVision/HDR10+ or just HDR10. DolbyVision has been on their digital releases so it’s “open”.

The only source? If it's not released on disc then whoever decides not to release it on disc should resign in disgrace.

Until there is a Disney+ thread on HDR, I thought this was the most appropriate place to post this. I see there's been some recent discussion around the specs for the upcoming Disney+ service.

What are the chances that Disney+ rolls out of the gate equipped with 4K/HDR and Atmos programming? Ideally, their current library gets UHD/Atmos updates even if the titles haven't been released on UHD disk (this is what iTunes does).

So, if we don't get legacy titles upgraded to 4K, hopefully they at least provide 4K releases for titles like that have been released on UHD disk, like Thor Ragnarok, Lion King, Last Jedi (eventually), etc.

Finally, let's cross our fingers that the new Star Wars (Mandalorian) and Marvel series also are released in 4K.

I really hope that Disney+ does not go the route of Hulu and HBO and ignore 4K content altogether. Let me know if you've seen any verification one way or another.

flatpanelsHd posted some videos of the interface on their youtube page yesterday. It was very disappointing - all flashy bandwidth-sapping animations and graphics and Zero information. The ultimate in style over substance. Eg, on the page which is supposed to tell you if it's HDR, what the soundtrack is, etc - is just a lot of fluff about the movie, and the single button "play". No technical information whatsoever. So they are deliberately hiding this essential information.

Even Amazon video, which has the world's worst User Interface, at least even that tells you that it's HDR, has subtitles, is 5.1 or Atmos, etc.

Why? They can do what they want and I would not be surprised to see the entire Series in HDR on the app but not on disc. I’d buy the discs if available but I would not cry if it was digital only on their app.

They can, but this is art as well as just an entertainment business, and for that part of it, any work deserves to be enjoyed in the best possible way, which is a physical disc with losslessly compressed audio and less compressed video.

I just looked at the video. Visually at least, I like that interface. As long as they have designed it to properly cache the data, it can work well.
Of course the service won't launch for seven months. So they have plenty of time to improve on it.

I would say chances are 100% that they will support 4K HDR on launch. As far as ATMOS, that is yet to be announced. They specifically mentioned 4K HDR support where/when available. Now what content will be available? I’m guessing titles already available as well as any D+ Original that wants it. As far as “new” catalog titles, they may have some that are exclusive to the service since they can serve up the digital more easily than disc.

I finally caved in and bought the 4k HDR disc of season 1 of Game of Thrones. Target priced matched Amazon at $29.99 and I had a $5.00 gift card so only $24.99 less the 5% Target reduces when using their Red card. Not bad IMO.

Yes, 100% that they support 4K HDR (dont know which flavor yet) at launch. They already have access to “a few” titles so putting those up would be little effort.

It was an investor day event. They were showing what’s coming to owners of stock. These types of things happen every year, they usually just don’t get a lot of press in forums like this since it’s “unrelated news”.

Right, thanks! That makes much more sense now. I saw all the "unveiled" stories (and I'm sure I saw "launch" somewhere but can't find it now, but I may have remembered wrongly).

I'm guessing it'll be the one that everyone's waiting for and the videophile world is clamouring for: SL-HDR1. Otherwise that format will be stillborn.

This was the first “public” unveiling of the service with a ton of more details revealed. That is why you saw a ton of articles. I’m sure things will pop up between now and Nov as well.

Agreed and I think the audio is even more insane listening in Atmos! I believe ppl will be referencing this track for years to come.

Finally got around to watch a UHD Blu-ray after my Sony A9F was calibrated a few weeks ago. So here is my opinion on Captain America the first Avenger, not a bad upgrade for from the regular BR definitely more detail and better color and some HDR pop. It’s a dark muted movie nevertheless and is not a reference disc!
Probably not worth double dipping unless your a die hard MCU fan and have a high end calibrated tv to see the difference.
I’m going to watch Bumblebee next on UHD disc and see how that is in DV?

It’s a dark muted movie nevertheless and is not a reference disc!
Probably not worth double dipping unless your a die hard MCU fan and have a high end calibrated tv to see the difference.
I’m going to watch Bumblebee next on UHD disc and see how that is in DV?
I agree with your assessment on the "First Avenger" UHD disc. I wasn't too impressed with it. I've ordered the other two "Captain America" discs from BB and I'm hoping the later two have better video quality for the UHD discs. We'll see soon.

Amazon added Guava Island in 4k HDR. It's an hour long concept album music video thing from Childish Gambino and Rihanna shot in Cuba. It's 4:3 and shot on 16mm film*, so don't expect eye candy. If you watch Atlanta, that should give you an idea.

Edit: I was mistaken. An article I read said it was shot on 16mm, but the credits say it was shot on the Alexa LF. So they just made it look like very grainy 16mm.

Yet another reason to sic Arya on him with a thousand small dragonglass blades.

I had my mother up to visit and we all had a schizophrenic viewing Saturday night. First VICE (streamed on VUDU, 1080p), an awesome political movie with incredible acting all around. About a quiet man bent on political power. Christian Bale tour de force.

Then Aquaman (4K HDR), an awesome political movie with Jason Momoa and Amber Heard as a redhead. About a quiet man forced into political power. Did not have Christian Bale, but did have Thalattoarchon saurophagis and great white sharks shooting freakin' lasers. Also, the Kraken from Clash of the Titans made a featured appearance.

On the whole, thoroughly enjoyed the outfits, the whales and battles. Aquaman was awesome too.
