I watched "Hellboy II" last night and both the audio and video on this one was absolutely excellent. Well worth getting the disc for this one because the HDR vs. SDR on FN makes a big difference. Also, the DTS:X is excellent with a lot of height channel use on this one.

My favorite line in this movie is: "I'm not a baby, I'm a tumor".

And oh the colors on BR are crazy! And to think some of the scenes look pure black and white in the movie.

That's just the mastering display which may be arbitrary.

It’s a subdued look, but the colors and HDR highlights (especially at end) add to the extra “oomph” for the 4K over the SDR.

That stinks, about the episodes. I didn’t think the trailer for season 5 looked good

The reviews seem to be all over the place. Some calling it the best episodes and some saying the worst.

It’s a slight departure and really depends on what you’re looking for out of BM. It’s still Dark Tales of technology. They aren’t bad (IMO), but they probably won’t appeal to everyone (as we can see from the reviews). I’d watch and make the judgement for yourself. A good bit fans of Snowfall will be happy about an appearance in episode 2.

Speaking of technology, Netflix has a new movie called I AM MOTHER. Its not 4k or hdr but has a lot of potential for it as I watched it with HDR+ and it looked stellar. Movie is amazing too with a robot mom and Hilary Swank and Rose Byrne. Highly recommended.

Sorry to nit-pick but it's technical - do you mean HDR10+?

No no... no 4K, no HDR of any kind. I watched it in fake HDR+ picture mode on my Samsung tv but have spent years perfecting it and making it as close to real consistent HDR as possible. And since my next TV will be an oled, Ive always wondered if oleds have a similar fake HDR mode like the Samsung.

Fair enough, yes I remember that mode just wanted to clarify.

To answer your question yes my beautiful LG OLED has a Picture Mode called "HDR Effect" which you can set coarsely to "Light / Medium / Strong" for the amount of "effect". Gamma is fixed in this mode, and Dynamic Contrast is disabled (avoiding the confusion we had with the Samsung KS) but you can adjust the nasty features like "Dynamic Colour" (off/low/medium/high) and all the motion settings and noise reduction stuff. HTH

My Dark Knight trilogy arrived yesterday and I decided to watch Batman Begins. You can tell it has raised black levels, but it still looked pretty good. Probably the best it will ever look. I forgot Nolan doesn't like Atmos tho.

Funny story. Coffee is kicking in and I'm feeling chatty going down memory lane. When Batman Begins first came out way back, I had just gotten a 73" Mitsu DLP 1080p tv. The 73927 if I remember correctly. Mind you it wasn't true 1080p back then. It used what they called "wobbulation" to achieve the effect. But I was digging it... or so I thought. When Bruce Wayne first gets to the league of shadows with his blue flower he walks in and the room is lit by several candles. Each candle had the dreaded rainbow effect you get from a single chip DLP. And once seen, you cannot unsee. I'm sure the tech has evolved, but back then it felt like I inhaled some of Scarecrow's magic dust. Fortunately I was still in my return window and sent it back for the Sony 70" XBR2 SXRD. And that led into a Kuro, then another Kuro and into front projection and so on and so on. Sometimes in this hobby I feel like a dog chasing its tail. What was I getting at here? Oh yeah, I don't think I've seen Batman Begins in it's entirety since the dark ages of early 1080p sets. That was some strong coffee.

This is two movies in the last month that they released in non 4k non hdr... That Ted Bundy movie, and now this one. That's two movies i have interest in watching, but then they release movies like rim of the world in 4k hdr

By the way, I watch all non hdr content in hd+ because if you don't subtitles increase screen brightness. I was able to get good picture quality in this mode mainly by switching color space from native to auto.

Why do the sub-titles increase the screen brightness? With a Full Array Local Dimming set this should not be the case.

None, I would expect towards EOY. It could come sooner, but it’s anyone’s guess at this point. When a date has been announced it will be posted here.

I'll be getting it when it comes. I'd love to see how the Battle of Winterfell looks coming from disk. As it was, for me it looked dark but very good.

I know that the fist season on UHD disk looked absolutely amazing so I'm expecting the final season to be the same.
