To answer my own question above, there are no software players currently on PC which support HDR playback, as 10bits output is needed and this is not supported by windows yet.
Only MadVR supports 10bits output in Full Screen Exclusive mode, but MadVR doesn't support HDR yet.
Good news is Madshi (the author of MadVR) is working on HDR support, so hopefully it will be an option soon for the players supporting MadVR as a renderer (jRiver, MPC-HC, MPC-BE, etc).

So at the moment, given that the Roku 4, NVidia Shield or Amazon Fire TV don't support HDR, it looks like the Sony FMP-X10 is the only option to play HDR demo files to displays without an Amazon app supporting HDR or Samsung displays able to display M-Go content in HDR.

Is this correct or did I miss something?

I have... I watched Red Oaks via my LG EF9500. As soon as the actual content starts, the LG flashes an "HDR on" message or something to that effect.

[EDIT] Sorry. Might have misread your post. By "owners" I am assuming you mean Samsung.

Nonetheless, I've seen it and it works. Promising. But I'm looking forward to Ultra Blu-ray to really see what my set can do.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out. How fast is your connection? I've got 50Mbps via TWC.

OLED owners with decent cameras, please take some pictures of HDR content (Red Oaks or Man In The High Castle). Sony owners are welcome to do so as well.

Bear in mind that you'll probably have to provide the images in RAW format. Jpeg and png normally have only 8 bits per color channel, which is inadequate to show the increased 10bit color gamut with HDR.

I see several folks mention download Scorch Trials in UHD HDR. I thought it was only available to stream.

What devices are you using that allow you to download the whole thing and then play it?

I was referring to the curved eg9600 oled. The owner wasn't getting hdr through Amazon, only regular 4k. Curious if any eg9600 owners have successfully gotten amazon hdr to work.

That's all we need is another forum thread. I already subscribe to over 20 threads. I wish people would not start new thread just to start a new thread. I think we could have placed the HDR information on this thread. Just my 2 cents.

MGO offers Scorch Trials hdr for download only. Took me about 8 hours to download to my western digital video pack.

I think that is gonna be different or everyone. its definitely better than the 1st one. it does have a zombie apocalypse type plot going on. I enjoyed it. I'm not sure though that the 2014 tvs will properly take advantage of the bright highlights (flashlights, lightning bolts have special HDR treatment). On the JS tvs, these highlights will be overly intense, while on the 2014 sets it might just appear "normal". It will probably be a little brighter than regular blu ray, but not super bright. but I have no clue. The graphics overall are good though. I had a 50% off coupon so I only payed $15.

Yeah for me I ask myself if I would buy the Blu-Ray which would be about $30 anyhow. If the answer is no then I won't buy the HDR version of the movie either. If the answer is yes and there is an HDR version of the movie I might be inclined to get that instead.

Cool. I didn't realize there were any devices which could cache locally like that other than the Sony server.

As soon as MGO offers rentals that you can download to watch, I'll be buying that device (whatever it is). I have a PS3 just for that use, with Vudu rentals. Much more consistent experience to watch a downloaded rental instead of a stream. And Apple TV is my choice for most HD content because it does that even better. But I really miss HD audio... Anyway, this is off topic.

Back to UHD, I am glad that choices to download and play it back exist.

I don't think there will ever be rentals to download. Rentals will always be streaming. Mgo does offer streaming rentals, but the hdr stuff is to buy & download only. Mgo has very good audio btw. I almost can't tell the difference between mgo audio and blu ray.

I hope you're wrong about there being no download rentals because that is one of the things I love about both VUDU and Apple

IE they permit downloading of rentals to ensure smooth playback even when one's Internet connection is less than reliable

Its gonna be different for all of us. I specifically bought the JS9500 for the HDR ability. So when a decent movie comes out in HDR that has good graphics and a decent plot, i wanna see it. The 10 bit color to me instantly makes a movie more appealing. The added depth and strength of the picture is addicting, a very expensive addiction lol A good half of the Scorch Trials movies is spent outdoors and those scenes certainly dont disappoint. the "city of ruins" looks awesome in 10 bit color, very realistic/cool looking. There are plenty of tv shows as well that i never would have watched had they not been in 4k or HDR. Blacklist (my new favorite show) was in 4k and was the only reason i started watching that on netflix. glad i did because i love the show. Some of the HDR tv shows on amazon such as the man in the high castle, i probably never would have watched had it not been in HDR.

I would have watched Man in the High castle anyway. It's a good show and I saw the pilot episode months ago. I mean I don't buy every movie out there. Never have and never will. There are some movies that don't deserve my money. If a movie isn't that good to me I won't pay just to see it in UHD even with HDR. Yes I can appreciate the notion of it being a way to show off your stuff but to me it's about the movie more than how it looks. A movie like Scorch Trials with a score of 43 on metacritic (6.4 from user reviews), 6.5 on IMDB, and a 49% from Rotten Tomatos(61% user score) is just not the kind of movie worth $30 for me. Like you said different for everyone, but I felt I had to expand on my comment.

Yep they support it on their own hardware and on the ps3. Most other Vudu platforms just do streaming.

Great show! My wife and I watch it all the time. It is also one of our favorites.

I am currently watching Marvel's "Jessica Jones" on Netflix. One of my favorite series so far.

(I have only a few episodes left to watch - wish I had more free time.)

Mgo has rentals but they are strictly streaming and only 1080p.

Longmire fan here. Also Man in the High Castle and the White Queen over on Amazon. (only 1080p and a bit dry at times, but with stunning visuals and sufficient nudity to keep the interest up)

Small rumor going around...

Scott wilkinson wrote an article yesterday on Ultraflix now being available on the Roku 4. In that article he mentioned that Ultraflix will launch HDR at end of January with 30 titles. The good news is that Ultraflix is now available to pretty much everyone (but roku doesn't do hdr). I commented and asked Scott for clarification on where he heard that, he hasn't replied yet.
