I'm the guy that gets really excited about the movies and is there when they come out. I've just been really disappointed with their releases overall. Bought End Game and wasnt impressed at all. Great movie though.

I had a different experience with it. I watched it on the 5040ub and thought it looked great. Volume was lower but I thought it looked good.

Oh projector? Well that would explain why you wouldn't notice raised blacks as much. I've seen the same with Ralph's reviews.

I get very excited too, but I eagerly await the reviews, and spend my hard-earned money only on those which are deserving of it. I don't understand the "need" to spend the money as early as possible without researching first, but each to his own etc

It doesn’t look like crap, but does have raised blacks ala Nolan movies. This was as intended however so it’s up to you to decide. You may want to wait for D+ and check it out for cheap.

I don't really care whether it's intended or not. Intentionally raising blacks is a bad move. Just as intentionally limiting highlight dynamic range is, like Alita. Just as we're allowed to criticize directing, acting, writing, CGI, etc of movies, we should be free to criticize choices made by the DP as well.

Agreed.

I haven't watched my Jedi copy yet but I did like the transfer of Endgame. The HDR was better than Infinity War and Also much sharper at times (and oddly softer at other times). I also thought Alita looked decent (watched that 2 nights ago.)

The thing about Alita is that it has a good looking picture, but one that's not much different than SDR. Considering the world of the movie and the visual style otherwise, there's a lot of potential for bright highlights that should have been used and weren't. So yeah it kind of disappointed me in HDR compared to what I was expecting, but at least the 3D was a big upgrade over the 2D/SDR version, unlike the HDR.

Here's what I read...

"I will stop riding the bicycle now since its no fun and I can never go over 2 mph on it! My Lawnmower though (Last Jedi?) gets up to 5mph and is much more fun! And when someone asked you about it, you said, well cuz its got paddles unlike my bicycle!"

You're watching movies on a projector and complaining about PQ my man... and then saying you thought Last Jedi looked good... its one of the crappiest 4K transfer I've seen, ever. Get yourself a legit display to watch stuff on and see how great PQ actually is on some of these UHDs! Honest advice! I will agree with you on Volume but thats easily fixed by turning up the vol by 5-8dbs, no fuss no mass.

Started watching Carnival Row and rewatching Jack Ryan - how come there's so much banding and posturization* in the shows?
Is it the low bitrate and speed that we were talking about on Amazon some months back? If so, its a horrible crime to be delivering such good looking content with such horrible quality.

I have watched both shows using my Samsung internal Prime app in HDR and have not noticed anything majorly wrong picture quality wise. Would you have a time stamp on an episode so I can check it out?

I watched John Wick 3 on my C9 today. I thought it looked great, fantastic at times. I did feel the DV highlights didn’t pop as much as John Wick 2, anyone else agree? The atmos track was amazing as always, story was good but not my favorite of the 3. Still, can’t wait for JW 4.

Amazon is notorious for banding on their 4k stuff. I've seen this pointed out by professional reviewer Chris Heinonon of Reference Home theater reviews too.

I thought JW3 looked good, but there were a few things "off" about it that it seems some fanboys either can't see or refuse to admit (still love them tho lol)

But...

Chris mentioned this very issue in his review. I also thought the neons and highlights lacked some sort of "clarity" that the 1st 2 movies had. Hard to explain.

Amazon has a lot of issue with their apps and color spaces I've noticed. For awhile, if you had Roku set to auto match framerate, it would force output as 12 bit color which introduced some horrible banding since the content was going 10bit -12bit-10bit before it was displayed. I could compare it side by side with the internal app on my C6 which was always fine.

Sounds like you're watching with native refresh rate disabled, in which case you should also be using 4:2:0 for 4K/60Hz, otherwise I found you'll get banding with 4K/60Hz.

You guys are gonna laugh at me, but I just picked up my new iPhone 11 pro max, and this thing has the best hdr/dv I’ve seen. I just played 10 minutes of the new Godzilla on my c9, and then on my iPhone, and the phone just blew me away. Supposedly it gets up to 1200 nits, and alongside pure black it looks incredible. Now I just wish this phone was 65” lol.

I could compare it side by side with the internal app on my C6 which was always fine.

Sounds like you're watching with native refresh rate disabled, in which case you should also be using 4:2:0 for 4K/60Hz, otherwise I found you'll get banding with 4K/60Hz.
I can try changing settings in Roku and see if the issue is there. I'm also watching via Oppo Hdmi In but dont think that should matter? I honestly think its the content and not the settings but I will give em all a whirl anyways and report back. Thanks yall!
