Haven’t watched the disc yet, so not sure. I usually see a slight difference as far as highlights, etc go. I’ll probably rip the disc later this week and see if there is anything dramatic.

Yes, Disney usually does DV for their digital versions when they have HDR. Discs outside of a couple of exceptions get HDR10.

I’ve seen the digital version, it was good, but I haven’t seen the original in ages. Nothing to blow your mind though.

I think you may be confusing this with Stephen King's opinion of the movie. He didn't like the way Kubrick deviated from his story and ended up producing a TV mini series of The Shining in 1997.

Great, I'm hearing good things about "The Shining" as well as "Gremlins" in 4k HDR. I'm hoping they're both better than "Stand by Me" 4k is as I wasn't impressed with that one. I'm not a grain guy so this may be the reason?
Honestly, I dont think I noticed much grain in the Shining... maybe just a few low res cutoffs of the snow blizzard outside.

Watched the shinning last night, thought it looked really good. There was a lip sync issue that was kind of annoying and the disc froze up once. Also had to turn the volume up to hear the surround speakers.

OK, that is six posts where The Shining is referred to as The Shinning. I don't recall anyone shinning up a tree or pole in the film.

I watched some of the DV stream of TS4, and it is downright stunningly HDR. There have been some reports of Toy Story 4 having 4K DCP, there are signs that point to it even in the stream. Texture detail is amazing at normal distances, more so during close-ups. The entire image is razor sharp.

I'll check out the disc in about a hour or two.

The way all the objects with reflective surfaces standout.

Got around to watching JW3 Parabellum, one thing I'll say, they put a lot in to vehicle headlight detail. It is just crazy how well the headlight detail is resolved.

It’s a foreign release rumor/announcement for both LoTR and The Hobbit trilogies. Nothing for US release yet. It was posted over on BR forums.

I'm more interested in LOTR. Hobbit I think I'll probably stick with 3D since I have both regular and extended and have a nice box set for the extended 3Ds, but with LOTR all I have is extended editions. Which while I enjoy the additions, I don't necessarily think they're better in every way and don't always have the time to watch those versions, so I'd love a theatrical set, and have been waiting to hopefully get one in 4K.

Although if Hobbit looks particularly impressive in HDR I may consider buying those again as well. The 3D is typically pretty good with those movies, so the HDR would have to be top notch to win me over.

LOTR were 2K DI’s and Hobbit was 4K DI. My guess is both will look good but the Hobbits will look even better.

Interesting. I would have thought LOTR was done in a more analog way. Like, maybe 2K VFX, but composited analog on the film like movies in the 90s or the Matrix movies for example, where you can still resolve 4K detail in the live action stuff, even if the VFX aren't as sharp.

All that being said, for me, resolution has always been the least important factor for UHD. HDR is much more important. And like I said, I don't even own the theatrical editions anyway, so this is one of those times where how much of an upgrade it isn't won't even matter for me.

ESPN will be producing its very 1st 4k broadcast this weekend with a college football game. But the audience might be extremely limited to just Samsung owners with Directv. Unless that's just part of the press deal. Waiting for more info from Chris Heinonin.
