Ok finished the last 40 minutes or so and people should be VERY happy with the last part of the movie. The battle, Scarif, space battle and “chase” (especially the “entrance” scene) all shine. So far TFA and RO are heads and shoulders above the rest when it forms to look/grading (IMO). RO is another title that should benefit from the extra breathing room of UHDBR.

Moana is now a must buy for me! Amazing colors and contrast, awesome atmos, and just a really good film

Frozen is ok...not a lot of extra color it seems, but it looks fine I guess...yeah, its ok, not a buy on disc for me

Phantom Menace doesn't seem to be any sharper, and maybe they punched up the color a bit...its been years since I saw it last....atmos is pretty epic! lots of activity, the best part of the stream

Attack of the clones has tons of great HDR pop! blade runner like city in the opening is great...resolution seems lacking (shot on 1080p cameras I think) but its fine....atmos is epic, they didnt mess around on the star wars mixes...these first prequels are not my favorite to say the least, but I would buy these on disc just to have them all based on the solid stream...now to see episode 3
The rendering pipeline used on Moana is a generation ahead of what was used on Frozen. There was a big change during Big Hero 6 as they switched from Renderman to the internally developed Hyperion renderer. That's the main reason you'll find that the newer animated titles can deliver much more in HDR.

Interesting article and I for one thought that 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc would be the last of the Mohegan’s of physical media.

Disney+ released the 2nd episode of The Mandalorian today, along with the rest of their shows. They are on a weekly Friday schedule. Same as Apple TV+.

I watched Big Hero 6 last night and so far that has been my favorite of the Disney Animated titles. The colors on this one really pop, especially once everyone on the team is in full costume.

Wait... isnt the entire season available day one like netflix/amazon? I dont know of any other shows on StarWars+ (ya thats what I call it) but are all shows like that or just this one? Are there even any other original shows on the service yet...? I was thinking of doing the 7 day trial and binge watch some orignal shows if good.

So with the LG Disney+ app I get DV, but stereo sound, and with Chromecast I get HDR10, with apparently really low resolution, and standard DD+, no Atmos.

I don't want an Apple device, is there another device that would allow me to play everything correctly? I was planning to watch Attack of the Clones tonight, but I'm not watching like that.

Monster’s INC is another winner on Disney+. You can for sure tell some of the animation is “old”, but it’s bright, colorful and has very good/excellent details. HDR/WCG do breathe some new life into this movie.

I ended up watching the regular Blu-ray on my x700 in Dolby Vision mode, which looked and sounded great

but then I decided to go try Disney+ on the chromecast again. It started in what looked like 480p, but I gave it a few minutes and it did indeed eventually get to 4K. Still, HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision is disappointing, and standard DD+ instead of Atmos is disappointing as well. I rewatched the battle of Geonosis, and there were a few things here and there that seemed to take some advantage of the HDR, although I could certainly tell they weren't working from a 10bit+ source like most HDR is. However, I'd say my x700's DV conversion mode looked better as far as fake HDR was considered, lol. Sharpness maybe looked a bit better on Disney+ though, but again, the source is something like 1440x800, so that's not saying much (although I think the chroma subsampling was the biggest benefit)

Netflix is actually considering doing the same thing, releasing 1 episode per week. I'm personally against this. But Their reasoning is to try to thwart people from signing up and binge watching and then canceling. The way I see it, if you really enjoy their original content, help support it with dollars so they can afford the formula they are using. Binging and canceling does not help them keep making original content. I have binged ALOT of their original content over the past 6 weeks and I am really impressed with the creativity and storylines and also great casting too.

In a related note, came across this article on Twitter about Netflix. Don't have hdr numbers but Netflix currently has just over 800 4k titles on Netflix

Netflix and Amazon have enough content spread out across the year that they don't need to do it. Sometimes I do see them split seasons into two halves though. I kind of like what Hulu does, 3 episodes at premiere, then 1 episode a week after that.

For someone who has little time to binge, it can be easier to stay up to date this way, and it also allows room for discussion on the show which builds hype, but it's also nice to have the option to binge if I want. Even so, with full 13 episode seasons even if I take a while, I'm often done within 2 months instead of 3 so I still benefit. Not always though. Still watching Another Life and The Boys for example, lol.

The least they could do is release these shows in a monthly fashion. Maybe 4 episodes at a time. This would keep you paying monthly, but would give a few to watch at once.

For Disney+ I'm fine since I signed up for three years at the equivalent of $3.92 a month. I would prefer to have all shows released at once, but at that low price I got, I am fine with it. I will be highly pissed if Netflix switches to the weekly format. I have consistently subscribed to Netflix streaming for well over a decade. But if they go to a weekly format then I would be less likely to keep subscribing every month.

Well, I for one am not fine with it and will not subscribe to star war+ no matter how cheap it is. I get antsy on end credits, let alone a one week wait. I agree completely. If Disney think that they can act as if binge-watching, or having free choice, is some kind of "temporary blip" and want to force people back into the past, they have another thing coming. It's the new way of watching TV.

Doesn’t seem to be hurting HBO. As long as it’s a quality show it will keep people coming back and push your hand to stay subscribed year round. For example, I would have signed up for 1 month to binge Disney, but now I’ll just keep it year round.

Or any number of shows plus this way they keep the show conversation going instead of being over in a week or two. The machine covering shows is quite large now and weekly episodes allow for more podcasts, articles, videos to be made. Disney was smart in moving to the weekly episode release to keep the machine running.

This is what I've been saying about a lot of Disney catalog releases this year. Not all. Some have been fantastic. But for a lot of them, it almost seems like Disney applies some kind of HDR-ify filter to a 10bit SDR source. It often feels like they crank gamma up a little bit, and then increase exposure to compensate. This makes shadows darker, highlights brighter, makes highlights a bit more defined, but ultimately still has that SDR feel to it. It's not unlike those fake HDR modes on TVs, just with a 10bit source instead of an 8bit one. Possibly with true WCG but that's not always guaranteed.

And you just have to think, with the sheer amount of HDR content Disney has released this year, there's just no way they've all received proper attention for their HDR grades. The Force Awakens and Rogue One having the best grades doesn't surprise me, as I know TFA grade was done at the time of theatrical release, and I'd guess Rogue One was as well. So those received proper attention to their grades. Some of the CGI movies looking good also wouldn't be too surprising as CGI can be rendered with lighting that naturally goes beyond what was rendered at the time. If that original source still existed as EXR renders, a quick and easy proper remaster would be doable.

I haven’t watch a new hope fully, I only sampled certain scenes and I just noticed more details from the higher resolution but It did seem like it wasn’t more than SDR. I’m no expert but that’s what my eyes saw. Fake HDR aside from certain content, the Mandalorian imo is a PQ masterpiece!
