After I came out of my tryptophan coma, I had to run to Sam's today. They have an 82" LG tv for $1599. I don't follow LG, not my jam, so don't know much about it. But $1599 for an 82" tv seems like a good deal.

Not if its not FALD which TCL and Vizio are owning everyone in price to value ratio and bigger screens.

PS, after finishing E4 of Mando I checked out the first 3 Pirate movies and if Mando is peaking at 200 nits, these movies are not much higher and maybe at the same nits level and with grain thrown in they leave a lot to be desired but its expected on 2nd rate streams. Really need proper grades for these with object based audio like the excellent Dead Men TNTs.

While LG is highly recommended for OLED, their LCD TVs are not. For that size range you may want to look at a Sony (IMO). While the size will be impressive, I’d keep expectations in check for dark room viewing/overall PQ

I'm not interested in this. Was just passing along something I thought was a good deal for anyone looking for a big tv.

Various notes:

Netflix added that new anime Levius in HD HDR.

Apple added the first three episodes of that new Shyamalan show Servant, which has an HDR label, but I only got SDR on 3 devices. Anyone try it on an ATV4K?

And DC Universe added the new animated show Harley Quinn.

It's funny when I start getting my devices mixed up. The other night I was watching some 4k HDR content on my Apple TV and I accidently said with the remote microphone "Alexa turn on subtitles". Surprisingly, it worked.

This is a partial sampling. Got these at Best Buy. They were the "Available for 1 hour pick-up" and "In store only" selections. More being shipped to me from both Best Buy & Amazon Prime.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the HDR looks in The Shining, and John Wick 3.

Outside of OLED, I don’t see how anyone can compete with Vizio and TCL at their price points. I have a TCL Qled in the living room and it’s 95% my OLED for 1/4 the price.

Anyone else watch the new "Dirty Dancing" 4k HDR title lately? I started to watch it last night and thought it was so bad I just couldn't continue. I went to another 4k HDR title and watched that instead. As far as I'm concerned this one is among the worst of the 4k upgrades.

I skimmed through it and, for me (on iTunes), it was pretty good. I checked chapters 6 and 8 at random. Although there is grain (expected) in some the scenes most are very sharp for a movie from 1987. The worst of the 4K upgrades to me was Goodfellas although it’s been a couple of years since I watched it and maybe they fixed it, I really suffered through that one.

I don't have "Goodfellas" but I don't think they usually make any changes to the video files except maybe in extreme cases? Also, maybe I didn't give it enough time when I watched "Dirty Dancing"?

I thought it was the best version of that movie.

The reason I brought up the possibility that Goodfellas might have been fixed is the title changed from just “Goodfellas” to “Goodfellas (Remastered Feature)”.

Could just be expectations and preferences. We’ve seen disagreements before regarding transfer/HDR. Older movies can always be a crapshoot and have variance in the movie itself depending on how the master/transfer was done and quality of the source.

This was my initial impression too.

But then I popped in my old Blu-ray copy that I'm not even sure I ever watched and the Blu-ray is complete trash. If I had to rate the Blu-ray from 1 to 10 I would give it a solid 3.5, the 4K transfer takes it up to about a six and a half so it's still a definite upgrade but not a demo type movie.

Could be as I haven't compared the two but I may now compare my 1080p Vudu version with the 2160p DV iTunes version?

EDIT: I compared the two and the 4k DV version didn't seem much better to me, maybe just slightly?

It's possible that the 1080p versions have been updated with a new 1080p version derived from the 4k remaster. Or the ITunes version is only an upscale with HDR added to it.

The colors are definitely different on the HDR version. It's better saturated and with better contrast/depth.

Even a new 1080p version from a new 4k master can be upgrades. I recently got the brand new Robocop steel book that has a new 4k master which was downscaled to 1080p for the BD (major disappointment it didn't get a true 4k release). But the new 1080p master blows away the old master for sure. But I think Dirty Dancing was filmed with a certain look to fit the 1960s time-line and any remaster will always be limited in how it can look.

Here's a comparison shot of Dirty Dancing I took with my phone, the colors aren't accurate (the green isn't neon at all) but they give an idea of how drastic the new master is.

2nd Pic Is an hdmi screencap of the old Blu Ray and new Blu Ray for Robocop. The dark scenes of Robocop REALLY needed some HDR to help with the contrast tho, very milky looking. Resolution though was fantastic.

Beverly Hills Cop trilogy landed on Vudu in 4k ahead of schedule.

Also Gemini Man has been confirmed for a January 14th 4k Blu Ray release with DV 60fps on disc, digital coming December 23rd. No confirmation if digital will be 60fps.

I didn't like Gemini Man enough to buy it anyway, but 60fps would have killed any chances of me buying it if I did. I couldn't stand the way that looked.

I'm reading that Beverly Hills Cop I doesn't have HDR and II and III indicate Dolby Vision but they're not playing in HDR. I don't know since my copies are on iTunes so I'm going to wait and see if they upgrade to 4k around the 17th.

I may pick up the disc because I really liked the way "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" looked with 60fps. I also may have BB rewards expiring in January so I have an excuse to use them.

60fps has my interest. I HATE movies still being 24fps. I have to turn on motion smoothing because stutter/judder gives me a headache.

Out of interest (not trying to catch you out), have you had headaches all your life then? How did you cope before 100Hz/120Hz CRTs were invented - just never watched movies at home I presume; only projected in a cinema/theatre (72Hz I think with each frame flashed 3 times)?
