Several Tom Cruise movies are set to release in 4k HDR in May:

https://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...c-in-may/45148

I'm hoping to get "War of the Worlds" but not sure if I buy on iTunes that it will upgrade since it's showing it's a Dreamworks title and that is Disney. The discs are Paramount but the streaming version seems to be Dreamworks?

Paramount/Dreamworks have been updated to 4K DV on ITunes in the past (see Saving Private Ryan).

Watched Bloodshot last night. It's my first of the still-in-theaters-movies-you-can-watch-at-home. Both iTunes and Vudu had it in DV, but only Vudu had it in Atmos. So Vudu it was. The movie looked really nice with good use of the DV. Wish it would have been R rated to really let the carnage shine. Could have been epic. I know it hasn't gotten many good reviews, but that's why I don't read reviews. I enjoyed it. Fun time.

Yes it was good in the theater. I also thought that an R rating would have been better.

Given the limitations of the Eastman color stock for Top Gun, as compared to things like Kodak Vision 3 or today’s digital cameras, does anyone have any predictions as to how HDR-ish Top Gun will be? Or predictions/expectations aside, what would you all be satisfied with, HDR-wise, with thee upcoming UHD Blu-ray iteration?

I realize the movie is likely not everyone’s cup of tea, but content aside.

Hmmm this seems like you may be “in the know”

I guess the question would be do we have any other movies that have been released and that were shot on the Eastman Color stock?

I guess it won’t be a “reference” HDR pop type movie (like Pacific Rim), but should be a decent restore (I’m guessing some it will have healthy grain as well (I remember seeing it in the BR)) using all the benefits (some slight HDR highlights (explosions, sunsets, etc) and hopefully the audio to match. Trying to keep my expectations in check.

I realize it’s difficult to predict with certainty because, in addition, you don’t really know if the DP shot a ‘thick’ negative to leverage as much as he could out of the chosen color film stock(s).
But I want you guys to smile and be happy with its appearance and not feel cheated in any way. HDR has taken a few punches to date.

P.S.
thick negative = a well exposed image containing a full tonal image…in other words, a solid picture to work with

Heh, outside of a few folks, I think many here know that there is more to it than just “HDR” if it looks good (improvements over BR) and sounds good (which is very important in some circles) people will be happy. With such variance in releases I think people are also more “knowledgeable” of what to expect with older films. Personally, I don’t think it will be one those who hate grain will like (PQ wise), but that’s me and from what I remember of the BR I last saw.

This is correct, and we all know here that video quality already adapts to the bandwidth available and adjusts to whatever the prevailing network conditions are.

But none of that matters. As we covered last week - the political powers are dictating otherwise, and the streaming providers are caving despite assurances of ISPs. Bandwidth cuts for Netflix will be coming to America in due course, it's almost a certainty now.

[EDIT: And as Cheddarhead explains, Netflix doesn't know about non-Netflix traffic, so if local people are swamping local bandwidth with full quality streaming, there can be unintended consequences]

You are probably correct about internet wide congestion BUT if Netflix lowers bandwidth usage it should help with local congestion/bandwidth issues. For example: I live in a small sub-division of ~40 homes that are all served via a single DSLAM. During normal times we get 10mb connections without a problem, now with everybody at home teleworking and the kids streaming non-stop we regularly get periods of time where the connection is less than 1mb. Until the ISP (CenturyLink) improves the backhaul to that DSLAM it will help with Netflix reducing PQ and bandwidth required.

Good news is I talked to the local CenturyLink technician (he has been on the job since before CenturyLink bought the local telco) and he said they have scheduled a backhaul upgrade for next month. Driven by the current emergency.

Since Canada has announced bandwidth reductions, before they are rolled out to America next, I would be interested in what bandwidth you guys are getting while you can still measure the "full" state.

Just checking UK Netflix (F1 Drive to Survive, Season 2 as it's Dolby Vision) with the "LG TV Plus" App's Info button. It says 9.15Mbps / 2160 (and it's still Dolby Vision).
If it's normally 15.5Mbps, then that's a reduction of 6.35Mbps or 40%.

Checking "Breaking Bad", it said 7.62Mbps / 2160.
So again if it's normally 15.5Mbps, then that's a reduction of 50%.

TIA
