Overall, I give it a rating of Great HDR, and Slightly Below Average 4K. It does beat Rogue One overall because of better shadows, but I do miss the brilliant highlights. The Force Awakens is definitely the best looking Star Wars movie in HDR.

I thought the highlights in RoS were awesome and agreed they do not reach the craziness of TFA but the movie is much more dynamic looking with a lot of depth and color. TFA doesn't have enough shadow details so even though HDR on it is turned up to 11, its not a 10/10 for me, especially with only a serviceable Atmos track. Still is big upgrade from the BD TFA!

Not commenting on the movies themselves but Bad Boys for Life and Bloodshot are both Sony and both have very good HDR.

Anyone see Empire Strikes Back 4K UHD Bluray? I'm curious how good it looks and sounds compared to Bluray.

If it's like the Disney+ version, the HDR is very weak, but there's a decent amount of improvement in 4K detail.

I got a chance to start catching up on some of the shows I've gotten behind on, and tonight I was watching some of the newest season of Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and I'm reminded that this show has some of the most impressive use of WCG I've seen on the format. Highlights are also great, and so is the 4K detail, but black levels are typically not perfect. If it wasn't for the raised black levels, this would be near reference HDR and 4K.

I’ve been waiting for this one. You just don’t get hand drawn anime in 4k hdr. There are some hand drawn 1080 p hdr, but this is the first 4k one I believe.

I think it was you that our assassins creed odyssey on your list of reference hdr video games. I’ve been interested in that game, but I noticed people mentioned raised black levels in that game. Is that true, or perhaps did they not calibrate it correctly?

I only saw two calibration settings for that game. Peak brightness in nits and paper white in nits.

I had raised black levels in Origins, but not Odyssey once calibrated. In the HDR menu there is paper white and peak nits, but outside of that menu there is also the standard "brightness" control, which affects black level.

I would recommend setting brightness first. Get the brightness control as dark as you can without clipping away the pattern. Then set peak nits to the brightest value you can get where the brightest highlights in the pattern don't clip (this will likely be significantly higher than your TV's actual nits), then with paper white what you essentially want to do is find a point where shadows look realistically dark, but the picture isn't so dark that it becomes unrealistically contrasty. This is sort of a gamma control, and it also affect the overall brightness of the scene as a result, so you want to try to find a good balance where the gamma looks right, but the overall image isn't too dark or bright either. After you set paper white, it may be necessary to go back and re-check the brightness control, as these two values can affect each other somewhat.

Origins and Odyssey have the same controls, but I found that Odyssey improved on it.

Today Netflix added the movie Coffee & Kareem, an action comedy starring Ed Helms and Taraji P. Henson. And season 4 of Money Heist.

Disney+ added Onward and two new Disneynature documentaries: Dolphin Reef and Elephant.

Apple+ added the mystery series Home Before Dark, based on a true story and starring Brooklynn Prince and Jim Sturgess.

I wonder if the carriers are charging more right now for things that are nonessential. I’m very happy to see VUDU offer the disc + digital for the movies currently in theaters. That’s the only reason I held off initially, because i wasn’t going to pay $20 to rent when it’s $30 to own.

Not sure why shipping is so high. Normally shipping has been free when doing D+D. $2.99 would be acceptable. But $6 to ship one disc is a bit accessive. Even in these CV19 times.

I was incorrect. My order last week had zero shipping. The two bucks and change I saw was the tax.
