New to HDR: 24p Confusion

Just a question. I own a Sony a9G and a Sony X700 4K BD player. Keep in mind that I am completely new to HDR and am not really familiar with it at all.

Anyway, in the past, I’ve always kept the 24p setting to “Off” on my BD player, while also keeping all motion enhancements “Off” on my TV itself. 24p has always just looked kind of weird to me, which is probably attributed to watching movies for many, many years and having become accustomed to the panning looking a certain way. I don’t know.

I’ve noticed, however, that in order for HRD to kick on with an HDR disc, I have to go into my BD player settings and change 24p to “Auto” instead of “Off.” I’m assuming that enabling 24p is required for HDR to work. I spent a good hour trying to figure out why HDR wouldn't activate on my A9G until I turned this setting to Auto.

My question is, is this normal? Or is this player specific? Can HDR content be watched with 24p set to off or is it required?

Quick question are your hdmi cables new or older? , there is no requirement for hdr to play in 24hz. You might be running into a bandwidth issue tho if you cables are older .

They are Amazon cables from 2016. So yeah, I guess they are.

Do you think buying newer ones will allow HDR without having to run 24p?

Yes if you buy hi speed certified 18 gps cables that will support hdr formats at 60hz. You should be able to play hdr at the higher frame rate . I am 99% sure that’s the issue , do you have another hdr source you can test with ?

I'll order some new ones and give that a try. The only other option for HDR right now would be the built-in apps on the TV (Netflix, Amazon, YouTube).

It didn't work. I switched out my old cables with all new ones. HDR will not work on the X700 unless 24fps is set to Auto/On. If you set it to Off, it will not recognize HDR.

I can still return my BD player, but I need to know how common this restriction is?

Hmmmm surprised , maybe something particular to that model of player ? Is there a deep color setting that has to be enabled in the tv ? Just curious what kind of cable did you buy ?

They are Amazon cables - although I wouldn't think that it would make a difference. HDR works fine - just as long as it's set to 24p. Turn that off and it's a no-go.

Do they have the hi speed certified sticker ? Cables are finicky especially for hdr . Anyone have a clue In the x700 thread ?. I had that player briefly but never tried with 24p disabled .

They didn't have any sticker, but I talked to Sony and they told me that 24p has to be turned ON for HDR - and that is the case for all of their players. But the guy also seemed very confused by what I was asking, so who knows.

I posted on the X700 forum to see if they can provide help. If not, I'll just be returning it and looking into another player, I guess.

Well that’s odd , seems like an odd “ feature”, maybe the hdmi port is restricted in some way. I have the Panny ub820 highly recommend it . Sorry if that was a wild goose chase .

Your Panny player doesn’t have this restriction, correct? If so, I will have to look into getting that one instead.

Why would you want to play movies with 24p off?
They are filmed at 24p and should be watched at 24p.
If you turn it off, the TV ends up showing it at its native refresh rate.
